7mm (micro four thirds equiv.) prime lens

The Peleng is a full-frame fisheye on 35mm still film. It will actually project a full 180-degree field of view within a circle on the film, black edges around it and all. Because the GH1 has a frame more the size of 35mm movie film, you don't see all those edges. With the 2x digital zoom on, it looks pretty much like a wide angle lens.

Other wide angle lenses will be more "rectilinear", where they try to maintain the square edges that you want. The Peleng doesn't do that, but it's crazy wide for the price. Obviously though it's not what you want, if you don't want the wild fisheye distortion.

Yes, I was aware the Peleng is used for 35mm. :) Presumably it's PL mount and you have an adapter?

Actually, above we were talking about the Olympus 8mm Fisheye for 4/3 format. It also has a lot of distortion and reading the blurb about the lens it seems they haven't tried to optimize to get rid of the curvature. The three zooms have much less distortion.

Yes I figured I can easily distort a wide angle image in post to get the fisheye effect (I lose some resolution but thats OK), but it's hard to take a fisheye photo and make it rectilinear...

Olympus 9-18mm looks good. I also found out that a store near where I live has it for hire. I just need to get the Four Thirds adapter.

Hello,

After watching this video I want a 7mm lens without paying one thousand dollars. I'm sure it's possible for less than 100$. I don't care about losing the 8mm to 13mm range and autofocus. I've heard that there are both 7mm lenses around the same size as micro four thirds, and 3.5mm surveillance camera lenses for 10 bucks (if it's the same multiplication factor as Canon FDs on Micro Four Thirds, then it should be around 7mm on the GH1).

The question is, what lens and what adapter?

Thanks!

By the way, if you are still thinking of c mount 16mm or industrial lenses, none of the wide angle ones I know of will cover the 4/3 format. They generally almost or just about cover at 25mm focal length (usually with just a little vignetting) while coverage gets better on the longer lenses. Also, focal length of a lens remains the same whatever format you put it on, it's the field of view that changes. This means that a 3.5mm CCTV lens would still be a 3.5 mm lens on the GH1 (and would give you a little wide angle circle of view in the middle of your black frame).

That's great - you can try it out without buying:). You don't need an adapter to put a 4/3 lens on a GH1. EDIT - YES YOU DO - sorry for wrong info.

For photos, it is possible to de-fisheye an image to get a rectilinear output. In fact prior to releasing wide-angle DX lenses Nikon Capture had an option to de-fisheye images taken with the 10.5mm DX fisheye. I have no idea if such steps exist for video.

To Phil: $100 for a 7mm lens? Um, I don't think that's possible, especially if you're looking for something with a more modern optical formula to better suit the GH1.

Olympus 7-14mm. Around $1700!!!. Seems to be a great lens. No metadata for removing distortion.

FWIW, I've heard now from 3x respected lens people that this is probably (one of) the finest zoom lenses avilable for still photography in ANY format. Except I thought the lenses retailed for over $2600!

Ooops.. Just realized, the lens I keep hearing good things about is the Olympus 35-100 T2.0

After Effects has distortion correction. You can even reduce fringing!

That's neat. But ouch, AE isn't cheap.

(sorry, just starting to dabble into video, and everything is 2x to 10x the price of photography stuff)

Peleng 8mm. Around $300 on ebay. You can get it in Nikon or M42 mount and use adapters to your M4/3.

In fact, I have one of them, and I might try it out on my GH1 just to see what it looks like...

Barry,
Thanx for the quick test move up and down the porch :-) So I gather this was without zoom factor and still gives extremely round fisheye-type images....@16mm hmmm with zoom = 32mm and were back to square1...

thats not going to be my wide angle lens then.
