7mm (micro four thirds equiv.) prime lens

Hello,

After watching this video I want a 7mm lens without paying one thousand dollars. I'm sure it's possible for less than 100$. I don't care about losing the 8mm to 13mm range and autofocus. I've heard that there are both 7mm lenses around the same size as micro four thirds, and 3.5mm surveillance camera lenses for 10 bucks (if it's the same multiplication factor as Canon FDs on Micro Four Thirds, then it should be around 7mm on the GH1).

The question is, what lens and what adapter?

Thanks!

That FOV was 14mm. Even it was said to be 7 to 14 on a 4/3rd lense. The FOV indication are always for 35mm format.

Peleng 8mm. Around $300 on ebay. You can get it in Nikon or M42 mount and use adapters to your M4/3.

In fact, I have one of them, and I might try it out on my GH1 just to see what it looks like...

14mm - not wide enough - that's what I get with the kit lens
You don't seem to understand. The kit lens says 14-140mm but it's an equivalent 28-280mm. The Panasonic 7-14mm lens is equivalent to a 14-25mm. If you want the video to look like the video in that link then you need a 7mm lens. The focal lengths are always listed in the same measurement. Then you have to do a FOV conversion based on the camera's crop factor. So you seem to want a 7mm lens for a 14mm FOV rather than a 3.5mm lens right? The 14mm on the kit lens is a 28mm equivalent.

I'd really like to see it in action.

I might be wrong but people have recommended fisheye optics while your looking for an extreme wide angle, unfortunately i think extreme wide angles are a lot harder to come by at a decent price tag.

Do you know if an additional adapter can correct the perspective distortion of a fisheye to make it extreme wide angle?

Ummmmmmmmmm okay. Maybe good for skateboard videos. I suppose I'll have to order the real deal (Panny 7-14).

Have a look at the Olympus 4/3 lenses. There's a 1:4/7-14mm zoom, a 9-18mm zoom and a 1:3.5/8mm fisheye. They won't give you all the functions of the micro 4/3rds lenses but I think you will save some money.

What I understand is, on these wide focal lenghts, unless it's a zoom lens, it's a fisheye?

Why is the "1:3.5/8mm" a fisheye when the 7-14mm isn't fisheye? Optics?

Hmm - good question!! I think it's partly optics - that 8mm lens seems to be optimized to give distortion. It's also probably because the wide end of the zoom is 14 mm so they prefer to call it "ultra wide".

Actually, on looking closer, not all the Olympus lenses are cheaper. Here's what I gather to be the differences roughly:

Panasonic 7-14mm. Around $1000. Used with RAW files for still photography with the G1/GH1 it apparently records metadata to remove distortion. This seems to be either in-camera or post processing, not sure, I think you can do either/or. The results look great but presumably this metadata has no relevance when shooting video??
There is a thread about it here:

Olympus 7-14mm. Around $1700!!!. Seems to be a great lens. No metadata for removing distortion.

Olympus 9-18mm. Around $500. By all reports a very nice lens too. You lose 2mm at the wide end but it's half the price of the Pany.

Olympus 8mm fisheye. Around $650. Definitely gives fisheye distortion.

The Peleng is a full-frame fisheye on 35mm still film. It will actually project a full 180-degree field of view within a circle on the film, black edges around it and all. Because the GH1 has a frame more the size of 35mm movie film, you don't see all those edges. With the 2x digital zoom on, it looks pretty much like a wide angle lens.

Other wide angle lenses will be more "rectilinear", where they try to maintain the square edges that you want. The Peleng doesn't do that, but it's crazy wide for the price. Obviously though it's not what you want, if you don't want the wild fisheye distortion.
