7D vs GH1 comparison video please?

Quiet! You hate HDSLRS, remember :D?

........

I will look for it! I've only just started watching the MonsterFest...amazed by the quality of the two aforementioned, can't wait for more!

Sorry Barry, I guess with the amount of people who have seriously said something similar you might not have immediately recognized my joke! I was trying to be humorous, because there are a few posts out there saying you have been negative, etc, when really you've been helpful, realistic, and excited about the bright points. So I thought I was being funny, hence the smiley and the 'Quiet!' which I would not have dared otherwise....

Alas, net humor...

No, I figured you were okay there, I just get painted with a big ol' brush sometimes so I wanted to make sure to point out that I like the DSLRs very much. I just refuse to be blinded by them, that's all.

Dear Blackout,

I shot the italian stuff you are talking about above. Let me assure you, that I am very happy with that camera. The codec also holds up if there is more movement, see these examples (all shot in 1080p, with kit lens):

I think the "codec issue" is related to automatic modes on the camera. I have only used manual modes so far (e.g. manual WB, manual aperture, ...) and I recall seeing the "mud" and "codec issue" in two scenes so far (out of ~2000 I shot). Those two I wouldn't have used in post anyway.

Since I started to use Canon FD lenses, I never saw mud again. By the way, the 50mm f1.4 is a terrific choice! You can shoot at night, the light sensitivity is phenomenal - all for 50€!

Don't forget the package. The GH1 with the kit lens is a run & gun cam with a small form factor, autofocus and decent audio. Perfect for documentaries as well.

I love my GH1.

best regards, Gunther

Gunther I have to say your GH1 stuff is simply the best I have seen anywhere and however you are compressing it even looks fantastic on vimeo! Please allow some 1920 x 1080 dls!

Dear Blackout, thank you. I honestly have to disagree (my stuff by far isn't the best to my opinion, but whatever). I'll try to get you some 1080p stuff.

best regards, Gunther

Hahaha. Modesty all around... seeing your stuff, I would love to see what YOU think is the best. I was blown away by your Italy footage. All gorgeous, with no jello or codec issues... but I really would like to see it in 1080p res. Also.. what is your workflow encoding method? Why do so many others footage turn to poop?

Dear Blackout, I've uploaded a 1080p24 file for my Nonnersdorf documentary:

http://www.vimeo.com/7305316

I have also found the italy video 1080p file. I think I need to upload it next week as I only have one HD upload per week on vimeo.

I use VoltaicHD for AVCHD transcoding and pull down, then I go with Edius Neo 2 for the edit. Then I output everything as an H264 mp4 file. In my opinion, it is very necessary to do a correct 3:2 pulldown from the original 1080i60 AVCHD wrapper. If this is not done correctly everything ends up as crap.

best regards,

Gunther

To all,

I have uploaded now a 1080p version of my Italy film as well.

Have fun, Gunther

GMC that Nonnersdorf video is now one of my favorites on Vimeo. Frankly I don't care what it was shot on and I don't care if it is 720p or 1080p. I like it for what it is... a beautiful little gem. Too many people get so hooked on the technical stuff it drives me crazy. If a video was meant as a test then that is one thing but if somebody is showing something for meaning or telling a story then why do so many people pick it apart like a bunch of ravaging dogs on Thanksgiving leftovers? Now I must go watch the rest of his videos since I only got to one and thought it was great as a little film and not because it was shot on the GH1.

From what ive seen i would put for video only

the GH1 and D90 very close in terms of performance (each has their strengths and weaknesses), but the 7D from what ive seen is much easier to get good picture out of, right out of the box.

Ive seen a few 7D shorts with nothing but practical lighting that still looked very good, and some with actual lighting that looked amazing.

I mean just look at those how to tutorials that that one guy makes, you know when a guy that owns a Red one gets a 7D that it must be pretty good.

The D90 doesn't look anywhere close to the GH1 in my eyes. The 7D has more of a video quality to me than the GH1. The GH1 has a smooth organic feel to me. Of course this all depends on what qualities you are looking for in a camera not to mention on how you perceive those qualities. To me all three have a different look and feel. You should watch the RED vs 5D vs GH1 video though because that was hard to tell the difference at times. Of course it was viewing online which has a huge toll on quality. That brings me to another point... just judging the quality of a camera by videos you see on Vimeo or Youtube can't do it justice. Especially since so many people shoot differently. So don't be so easily persuaded by somebody that just owns a RED.

The GH1 has a better look as far as I'm concerned. It's more neutral, which is what you want for post. If you want to do crazy stuff in camera do it with lighting. You have to remember that 90% of what you see on this site is naturally lit. If you want naturally lit filmic look than maybe the 7D is your best bet. I personally find the contrast and colors too unreal. I'd rather have a great neutral image to work from, and that's where the GH1 shines. Add to that the better cost and better ease of use and you have a winner in my eyes. I'm shooting with my FD primes now and I couldn't ask for more. The flip out view finder is incredible. Sure there's mud, but unless you're shooting an action movie, you'll be fine. If not, shoot in 720 and convert to 24p and you get around 90% of it. Like people said, it's how you shoot your film, and most amateurs have no clue how to do this, and then blame the camera. Give them a super35mm rig and a crew and you'll still get garbage. The Gh1 is more than ready for feature film use. Hire a sound guy and go.

Whatever your smoking; it sure is working! :-D

lol, macworld would disagree with you.

ill just leave this here

Honestly i wouldnt say its that cut and dry. i would say that in certain situtaions the GH1 outperforms the D90, and in others the reverse. I like the instant library of lenses available for nikon and the still capabilities better, but either way your still looking at 2 very good cameras that are still essentially the beginings of dslr video.

Ummm... macworld? Hehe. Anyway... people can say all they want about this camera vs that camera but it all just comes down to what you are going to use it for. There is so much misinformation flying around it doesn't matter anymore. Who cares what camera people prefer or how one performs over the other. If you are happy with your camera than that is all that matters.

Used to shoot with a D90 and now use the GH1. You can get the GH1 to look very similar to the D90 by using a strong gaussian blur. :)
