7D rigged up for work

I too can add quite a bit to my camera and have to see what it looks like, but like you've said, for a shoot I add what I need. For instance, I have a follow focus that works great, but when shooting a festival this weekend, it wasn't necessary. That's the beauty of the DSLR, it's modular :)

I will say this though, one of my best investments was this:

(without the viewfinder)

I bought this and put BMX grips on the metal portions. One of the problems I was having with a naked DSLR is that it's very easy to get jitter in my movements causing jello. With the wide and easy to handle grips with this, my motion is much smoother and more controlled. Something to consider. And one nice thing about more weight on the camera is it moves smoother! :) Too light and nothing keeps you from shooting shaky cam! :)

That was a problem... It took a riser from a matte box (S. Korea) and had a machine shop mount the follow focus plate on top of it... so it gives me vertical adjustment.. works great..

I think it's great. I shoot fly fishing videos, and when I do I am trying to keep as mobile and minimal as possible. However, I also shoot corporate videos, and I can say that if I showed up minimal to my clients that don't know anything except that bigger is usually better, they would have laughed at me and wondered if I knew what I was doing. THAT is what this rig is for. To everyone that can't understand that, it's your loss. I absolutely loved my Redrock shoulder rig with 7" monitor, follow focus, etc. this last shoot I was on.

Impression is extremely important for the clients that we work for. I would like to say that it should and does not matter... it is all about the image, but in reality that is not the case. Corporate clients have an expectation of professionalism that extents to "gear" and while that expectation will shift in the future as new technology and form factor become the norm. Currently if we were to show up on a shoot with a stripped down DSLR our client's impression of our company would be on the negative side. Not all clients, some are very forward thinking and they understand "it is about the image"... Frankly, we do business (and shoot) in a way that works for us... There are many approaches to great image creation....
