7D or T2i?

hey All, so, I am officially in the market for a DSLR that can shoot video.

Now, I am a film student and will mainly be using this for filming and I have a budget of 3 Grand.

So, I'm wondering:

should I get a 7D, 15-85mm IS USM lens (kit) and a Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 USM

or, and T1i EF-S 18-55mm IS and EF-S 55-250mm IS (kit) and a Canon EF 50mm F/1.4 USM?

now, I am looking fr what will give me the most CONTROL over what I shoot, since they have very comparable footage IMO.

Right now, I am looking at the 7D because it is heavier (steadier. Better for run and gun), as well as it seems to give me more control, but the T1i's price is VERY tempting....

EDIT: Also, I am coming from a DVX100 background, so the learning curve is the same.

Edit 2: Edited "Right now, I am looking at the 7D because it is heavier (steadier. Better for run and gun)," to "Right now, I am looking at the 7D because it is heavier (steadier. Better for run and gun), as well as it seems to give me more control"

7d . has more options and the FOV is better. Magic lantern is working on a firmware that will make it work like a video camera with AGC control for sound

How is the FOV better? I thought it was the same?

ML is very important but unknown if we will even get it for the 7D so don't let that influence your purchase...purchase what is available not what could be. I'm VERY happy with my 7D, HOWEVER had the 2Ti been announced before I purchased I would wait and find out more. The $1000 differance is alot of money and that could be used for a real nice lens so my advice is to wait and read comparison reviews.

As much as it pains me to say, Boulder has some very sound advice. If you can save the money, then i say wait and see.

Another thing, even though the 7D is heavier you still will need a stabilizer of some sort so that issue is moot. The 7D has more ISO settings but the 2Ti probably has enough that it isn't going to matter much. The SD cards for the 2Ti are much cheaper. The 7D will take better stills. IS lenses DO help. The 50mm 1.8 is a real steal and the differance between that and the 1.4 may not be worth the differance in price IMO. The Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC might be a lens you want to consider as those Canon zooms arn't terribly fast. you can suppliment those with some cheaper Nikon primes.

Edit: Other must-haves you should consider...a variable ND filter larger than your largest lens and step up rings for all the lenses. Extra batteries. LCDVF or Z/Finder, Zoom 4Hn, some stabilizer device or shoulder mount

I forgot about the ND filter etc. crap.

O.K. So, Quick question: is the Z/finder/LCDVF just something to let me see the LCD screen in any lighting condition?

Edit: Well, I will mainly be shooting in low light situations, so I believe that a variable ND filter is not good for what I am currently using it for, and would be a future purchase. I'm starting to think:

T2i or 7D + 50mm 1.8 + Glidetrack shooter (works as a shoulder mount, and also a small dolly track) + Z/finder(?) + Zoom H4n (Is there a cheaper alternative to the H4N which will let me us an XLR cable an headphones for the boom mic I have access to?)

EDIT 2: Sorry for this. but is the T2i weather/dust resistant? This is VERY important as, here in Nova Scotia, the weather is pretty unpredictable haha

T2i for me. Having paid premium for broadcast gear throughout my career, this price is hard to pass up. Core items (glass, support, filters, etc.) are readily portable to newer systems as megapixels increase and features improve. Playing the latest-and-greatest hustle seems silly for a camera that'll be an afterthought this time next year. Seriously.

I'll never see the money in depreciation on any of the gear everyone 'had to have' at the time. Anybody need a rocking BetaSP field package? Complete with tripod that could seriously injure someone.....

I'll take the T2I with solid accessories and watch as prices drop and newer cameras get released. Happens every time. I've got tons of receipts.

So essentially, I'll feel less pissed when newer technology's come out?

You want to say the 5D Mark II, right? ;-)

Yes Def like the 5dmkII .. When the 5d gets 24p you will see people going that direction for FF sensor the Pic Quality is just amazing.
So Magic lantern for the 7d will Over shadow the comparison of the t2i. t2i seem like a good stunt cam for me If I drop it or damage it in a Stunt It wont Hurt so bad..

Indeed. That is a great way to look at it. You'd no doubt be happy with either camera. You could save some money and be off telling great visual stories while someone is on this very forum counting pixels and debating the next model / firmware / workaround.

O.K. So. the last deciding factors.

1: Is the T2i weather resistant like the 7D?

2: does the H4n allow the use of headphones?

Okay then. so. Right now I''m looking at:

7D + 50mm f1.8 lens + 8 gig card
Zoom H4n
Glidetrack Shooter (shoulder mount/dolly)

and then in the future a Z/finder + Variable ND filter + Lens adapter for my old Pentax lenses.

So total issss 2680.62 plus tax plus S&H. It's in my prospective budget. Awesoeme.

any other suggestions you have?

I'm confused a bit. I thought the T2i and 7D will be almost virtually identical in everything video (stills are a different story). What will Magic Lantern do that will make the 7D/T2i comparisons moot?

I don;t know. but the 7D is weather resistant so that automatically makes it the 'buy' for me.

I took the 7D on a 9 mile hike in 18" of snow a couple weeks ago... it took a few spills into the snow and was pretty soaked, but came out like new... no issues whatsoever. My T2i arrives tomorrow and I doubt it will be nearly as weather resistant. I have an old Canon Rebel XT that I'm guessing the T2i is kin to... the T2i should make an excellent B-camera, but the weather resistance of the 7D has already proven itself to me. Both cams will be present on my next shoot. :)
