7D or Mysterium X

you should check out what mark from offhollywood shot at iso 1600 if you haven't yet. All available light around the city. Also, some good shots in there as far as skew would be concerned.

I just found it interesting becuase I was thinking of moving up to a S35 Scarlet... this footage mad me change my mind... especially since the post on here where guy used neat video

(If you are talking about the dicaprio match grabs) Those were straight up frame grabs from motion shot on a RED One with a mysterium X sensor in it. Not shot in stills mode on a DSMC (or any mode for that matter :) ). Just for info...

Later,
Jason

I know I was just saying if I wanted still I will shoot still mode... dont get me wrong I have been an advocate of the scarlet since it was introduced almost 3 years ago... but since I got my 7D I have really been taken back... I am in love with the footage from the 7D/5D with zeiss primes. I maybe will look at the 3D when it is released... 1080 24 on a full frame cam... perfect.

I feel like the 7D is great for web and DVD delivery. I feel like the Scarlet will be the better tool for real HD (and 2K, 3K, 4K) delivery.

I feel like the 7D offers decent post capabilities. My initial tests with REDCINE-X and some .r3ds makes me really really want Scarlet. REDRAW is very powerful

Yes and no. Yes to today, no because when the Scarlet comes out, it'll have a Mysterium-X sensor and there'll be a $3,000 to $6,000 difference in price at that point.

And yes, for many of us that difference will be well worth it.

And yes, for many of us, that difference will in no way be worth it.

I was wondering if any of you had seen the new mysterium X reel?

The new RED sensor was given to someone and they were asked to shoot "The Hard Stuff". As I watched this all I could think to myself was, what of these shots could my 7D not do... my answer is none... GO 7D...

The 7D would look very poor in comparison to that same reel compressed even slightly better. I think I put that as delicately as I possibly could have.

There's no doubt that the these cameras are better than Canon HDSLR's. But if you're on a budget you're on a budget and then something like a Canon can achieve many great things.

I really don't understand the Bitching about Scarlet and RED compared to Canon.

It so useless.

RED Scarlet

It's 3K
It's RAW, bigger dynamic range ( will Canon give that to ya? )
It's MORE expensive

7D

It's upscaled HD
It's H264
It's great
Can't go above 800 iso

Both are great camera's in their league and for their purpose.
Competive western behaviour is so 2001

Peace

People keep bringing up feature films as the be-all, end-all for these cameras, but I think reality needs to intervene a bit:

If you're making a feature and it has any potential at all, nowadays, someone with money WILL find you, and will give you the extra, oh, $10-20 grand you'll need to get the better camera. Because of the RAW, the faster, better sensor designed for film-making, the audio capabillities, the proven workflow, immense array of lenses, hot-swap battery capability, etc. ad nauseum, that camera is the RED (One).

There's so much interconnection, and so many markets for film; it doesn't matter what kind of movie you want to make, if you have talent someone will notice. As soon as they do, boom, you'll be using a better camera. Because a money person won't want something shot in a format that has limitations, and the RED footage (or film) doesn't have (many) limitations.

Because of the moire / aliasing, the lack of ability to grade very deeply, pixel binning, and compression artifacts, the 7D would impose too many limits for doing wide theatrical or HD release.

Where the 7D will shine, is because of it's shallow depth capability, and strong looking image it will give someone with talent the ability to make an amazing short, or demo, etc. to show their talent. Then when they get their feature, it will probably be shot on another camera. There will probably be exceptions, like some prodigy out of the blue who works in a vacuum, but I don't think it'll be the rule. The wide array of treacly (bad) films at the AFM this year somewhat proves the point that talent finds its level. (A lot of them were shot in Red too, but that's beside the point.)

I think for most other uses, corporate, videography, event, it's a great camera in every way, because people love the image it produces; it's such a different look from the current crop of video cameras.

On another note, I also wonder if Canon, Panasonic etc. really want to cannibalize their video camera market with VDSLRs, to me it doesn't seem very logical; and their professional and prosumer video divisions (which are undoubtedly mangaged separately) can't be very pleased. People keep saying, I was going to buy an "X" video camera but now I'm getting a 7D; that has to rankle those managers.

Nikon, on the other hand, has no such issues... (except for broadcast camera lenses)

A-freaking-Mazing!!!

What an incredible time to be a filmmaker!
Bottom line: Red based or Canon, Panny, Nikon... we have NEVER had tools that have performed at these levels at such LOW price points. Truly something for every one. Less bitching and more filmming :)

If you are finishing at about 720p and use a softening filter, preferably 540p or lower, then I can see an argument for the 7D. Above that forget it.
If you need high ISO to look clean Red will be better.
If you need high dynamic range Red will be better.
If you need high frame rate, Red.
If you need no/afterthought skew, Red.
If you need to get what you can with less money, 7D.

In the end you know what you need, and the quality will not come from the camera alone... but keep this in mind: RAW with such low noise floor as you'll get with M-X is exponentially better than h.264... so much so that this whole thread feels like a big fat joke.

You can't compare these any more guys... just look at the results... we could "say" they were two different leagues, now we know that they are even further apart than we could ever have imagined.
