7D or 5D strictly from a video perspective.

I have been at this for months, I currently have a T2i and am impressed with what it can do. I want to step it up to the next level. My question is this, will I see that much of a difference from the T2i to the 7D? What would the consensus be here 7 or the 5?

let me know what you guys/gals think.....

T2i, 60D, T3i, 7D video will all be virtually the same. of all these cams, the big things that make them different for me are...
7D has much better HD out for external monitors, while the other three are SD out while recording. (7D and 60D have much better build/feel IMO)
60D and T3i have the swivel LCD (which I like) 60D has 2 wheels, 1 for iris and 1 for shutter

I sold my T2i way back and got a 60D which I like MUCH better, but IQ is the same as the T2i.

All that said, unless there is an announcement of the 5Dmkiii soon , My next DSLR will be a 5Dmkii. (ALL of my glass is EF and nikon)

The 7D is a much better camera from a design/engineering standpoint. The moment you pick it up you'll feel the difference - it's heavier, and the body doesn't feel like it's made of plastic like the T2i and 60D do. I've shot extensively on the 7D and the 5D and there's not a big difference between the two in terms of build quality or image quality. In my experience the 5D is slightly better in low light because of its larger sensor, but it's negligible. I prefer shooting on the 7D because it's APS-C sized sensor gives me a FOV much closer to 35mm film, and I came from a film background and not a photographic background.

As of today, right now. T2i with Magic Lantern is the best Canon DSLR for video. Will the 60D or 5D catch up, most likely. Unless you are a large person with above average hands. Stay with T2i and wait to see what is next or buy Glass and get new body next year.

Personally I think the 60D or T3i are the ones to get if only for the articulating viewfinder. I have a T3i, 60D and a 7D and find that one feature so much more useful than anything else. Trying to frame a shot with just the fixed monitor on the 7d or even 5D is just ergonomically painful. Of course you can get around this with an outboard monitor or HDMI viewfinder but that adds costs and gear to carry. And of course as mentioned above, the T2i with Magic Lantern is the most advanced in terms of video features. So it comes down to what you value most. Shot to shot- for me- articulating viewfinder makes all the difference.

I would love love love an articulating screen. My T2i does not have it. Maybe my next one will. I would not buy a 60D or T3i just to get that upgrade. The OP already had a T2i. Get glass, get support, get more cards, get business cards made, but don't buy a 5D thinking it will make your video that much better.

From the Magic Lantern Sticky:

Too many things for me to list here, but some of my favorite examples include:
Manual Audio control
Live audio meters displayed on screen during recording
exposure zebras
live histograms
live audio monitoring using headphones (plugged into the AV out jack) during filming
focus peaking
focus assist tools with live magnification area (this is a must IMO, if you intend to be able to pull accurate focus while using the built in LCD)

Really? evn more than the 5d Mark 2?

From my work which is purely video as well, I got first a 7D, its great, especially with the HD monitoring. I needed a 2nd cam which is also better than my current so as late as 5 weeks ago, when I concluded any new camera from japan will be delayed due to the disaster, I bought a 5D cuz I needed another cam asap.

The 5D is a great compliment to the 7d/t2i/60(all have similar image output). It is BETTER than all the aps-c sensored cams.

Running both cams through charts and actual tests, the difference of full frame makes you have like double your lenses, for instance if you have 50mm, its 80mm on your 7D, a 105mm is 168mm and so forth.
While the 5D doesnt have 60P, its color aliasing is lesser than the apsc sensors.
Its also better in low light.
Its image aesthetic is better than the aps-c.

Forget its bells and whistles, I look at them as merely sensors with a lens attached to them. The thing i look at is the bottom line, the image output.
Forget the sound, the ergonomics etc, these things are not designed for it.

So even if its already old and due for update, get it if you need it now. If your work pays for it, then it doesnt matter. My 5D which I got 5 weeks ago is already paid for.

If a new one comes out, you can't get it soon anyway, also you wait for it to get good reviews and for its bugs to be ironed out.

what about 7d,5d against pana GH2 from a PAL point of view.without 25p will i be loosing out or would i get somthn better than a 7d
