7D Music Video, very low light, run & gun

My first 7D project, very low budget, run & gun with 7D on DV Rig music video. ISO 800 & 1600, 1080p 24fps. Mostly with 50mm 1.4.

A few HV20 and HV30 shots as client wanted some footage from last year. This is music video that is promo for a haunted attraction - so needed to feature band/song and actors from the Woods of Terror.

Very nice.

How long did it take to shoot that? I'm guessing, and its just that a guess, that the HV20/30 footage was at around 47, 1:04 and 1:18 seconds, the bluer footage where the light was directly at the camera?

It looked good I was just wondering how the 7D would handle that?

This was very well done.

Thanks. Actually those are 7d shots - it's very hard to tell the HV20 shots except at 1080p - then they are really obvious. E.g, the wedding dress woman at in the open and the house with door opening are (but color corrected heavily to get them to match 7D).

The shots you noted at were shot in total darkness except for a camera mounted 10 Watt $20 Blue LED light at ISO 1600.

This was all shot in a few hour very run and gun where you are mostly trying not to fall into ditches or deep holes in the woods. Last year, when I shot it took 2000 Watts of crappy work lights and Smith Victor photofloods (it's brutal shooting conditions) to get the HV to register an image at all for that b-roll.

This year, with the band, we lit the whole band and front of th house with 2 500 Watt photofloods. The 7D B-roll this year was available light (mostly haunted lighting to keep people from tripping and falling into holes in the dark) and my 10 Watt LED when that light was off (I was shooting on a night when the turn off the minimal lighting for extra scares).

The 7D saved my ass this year (other than the challenge of focusing).

There is a 3200 ISO shot (of the weird puppet character) I got with the 7D shot under a dim blacklight where you could not see your hand in front of your face.

That was very awesome. Great job! Nice to see that the HV20/HV30 wasn't easy to spot since I own one. hehe. I do really want something with great low light capabilities like the 7D. I love that about the 7D. I'm really wanting one for that and the shallow depth, but oddly enough now I worry about not being able to get deep depth of field with the 7D in low light. Any recommendations for lenses and such that are affordable?

Thanks

I've not had much trouble with DOF in low light we you need. Because you can shoot clean at 800 or 1600 ISO (1600 can need a bit of NR and careful exposure), you can stop down to F8 or F11 if needed. I shot macro still stuff stopped down to F18-F22 with kit lens and stuff looked pretty good nonetheless.

Even mediocre still glass is going to be better than HV20/30 glass in almost all areas.

Thanks!. Occasionally - I know a few filmmakers done there. I will presenting my IMAX film at Astronomy days at the NC Museum at the end of Jan.

Yeah, it's a huge operation - about 25,000 people go through it each year and it's nationally ranked in the top haunted attractions.
