7D - more aliasing in 720p?

I have recently placed a preorder for the 7D so here we go with the pixelpeeping.

I am assuming that the footage found here comes directly from the camera: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-10042-10239-10240

I took the two "Thunder" clips into PPro CS3 (not the same project) and discovered that they didn't quite look the same. I rendered still frames as tiffs and brought into photoshop, put them together, added text and saved as jpg. None of them has been resized in any way.

Look at the rails. What do you make of that? Is that some aliasing/stairstepping/evil going on in 720p? Is it possible that I am doing something wrong? Could it be the photographer? Different sharpness settings in camera? Has it even been discussed already? Be nice. It's my first pixelpeep.

Yeah, there will naturally be more aliasing in 720p than 1080p because there is no downscaling algorithm... the camera just skips more lines to get 720P.
 
I shoot in 1080 so it's not a concern for me but if you want to overcrank you might have to dial down the sharpness. The next 30 days will be very interesting.
 
I was wondering why details look pixelated, or like pixels that were blurred?

I downloaded many uncompressed 1080 files and am troubled by this. The wider you go, the more apparent it is.

It looks video-ish, or a maybe a better way to put it is that the detail definition does not look organic, it looks processed. Geez, I cannot be the only one who is seeing this??

I am especially confused since the daterate is so high...
 
It does look very video-ish. I haven't seen uncompressed footage from the 5D Mark II, so I have no base of comparison.

I think I'll hold out for the Scarlet.

However, the 7D does look very nice, just kind of video-like.
 
5D, 7D cams have the razor sharp sony EX-1 video look with shallow depth of field. You can probably turn the sharpness all the way down in cam to get more of a soft film look. The razor sharp look is why I pre-ordered two, it's perfect for one of my future projects. I'm sure you'll start seeing all sorts of looks in the next 30 days or so.
 
It's not the sharpness, it's the "mushy" quality of the edges and colors.

I don't know, maybe it's just because I've been working with RED One footage the past month, and anything else by comparison looks bad. :p
 
I am a bit worried about the quality of the 7D. Granted all of the footage is from pre-production models (and none of it looks very good...), I pre-ordered more on faith rather than proven image. I can't imagine why the video quality would be worse than the 5D, but everything I've seen so far is pretty unimpressive.

Hopefully Philip will get a hold of one so we can see some decent results. I won't be sold until it's in my hands and an extension of my eyes, though.
 
I hear yea but the first D7 videos look a hell of a lot better than the first gh1 videos. We need to give it time.
 
It is just hilarious. Just like Barry says. Everytime a new camera comes out everybody goes thru a cycle. Now everybodybody is going thru the part when they start downloading stuff that God knows what was done to it with regards to compression, etc. and making judgements about the camera based on it. It is just unbelievable, no better yet, amazing. It will be a very long time before enough people have it in their hands to start making rational conclusions. Again, this just hilarious.

yes and this is exactly what keeps it interesting. The crackle of keyboards and clicking of mice in post after post of almost pointless banter about something nobody knows the answer to until its out.

There should be a thread for only webcam broadcast to say your point, a dvxuser reality thread if you will. It would be pretty funny replying to a webcam post with another webcam post.

I have been shooting and editing on the EX1 for a feature for the last year and a half. It does not look like EX1 footage, in comparison with the uncompressed files I have downloaded. If it looked like EX1 footage from a wide angle, I would be very pleased.

Everybody is plunking down their money and going bananas over the specs, but I need to see something that I think looks excellent if I am going to do the same. So far, I have been very underwhelmed.

I think it is hiliarious how you think that people aren't going to want to scrutinize and discuss all of the available footage that has been released.

Sure it does. This could be the same thing with this camera. Nobody is saying it's not. I am hoping it is just
some people who don't know how to sweeten.

Nobody is making any final conclusions...just talking about what is available to discuss.

Do I have to prefix every statement I write with "from what I have seen so far"??
