1st ever DVXuser 3D Short Film collaboration?

Here's where I become a stick in the mud. It's not good enough to say it can be done.
Let's see something done. I would not ask or suggest to Larry to go ahead and start organinzing the shoot, and begin budgeting and so forth without having PROOF the people he's asking to complete the scenes can do it.

If WE are offering, then WE need to show proof first. The test does not need actors in the scene. Only the scene has to be realistic. But if I were Larry I would not invest my time and money and everyone elses based upon the assumption that some guys around dvx MAY be able to pull it off. BS.

I won't commit to this kind of a project until I see that we can do it. And right now I do not see that.

It can be done and maybe Larry should explore other talent to get it done on time and on budget. Otherwise, we are still just learning.

// but hey, this is your deal, so pursue it as you guys want. (got carried away there :))

Woah...hold on. I must apologize. I was not intending for you guys to do it, at least I wouldn't just assume it. Rather, I would approach the individuals/teams directly about involvement.

I was asking about it in here because it had a similar goal.

My comment about being easier on the budget meant I only had to budget for an FX team/house to create these environments rather than flying a full cast/crew to a foreign country.

Sorry for the misunderstanding :)

Yeah, when you started talkin 'feature' I thought woah myself, haha.
The short film fests here are one thing where at least you can experiment with ideas and get feedback right away and improve. You definately would want to see some previous proven work from the VFX team before committing to the shoot, which was what I was trying/did say.

Yeah totally. My intent in inquiring here was to ascertain the viability of using CG to create a believable environment. Since Anhar was discussing these kinds of ideas I jumped in and asked about my specific project. In hindsight I should probably have started a separate thread.

After seeing that render Anhar did without spending millions of dollars and millions of man hours, I now see that a semi-pro or pro FX house could easily do what I want. Now I just have to raise the money to hire them :)

oookay, glad everyones on the same wavelength, to clear things a little more:

I'm not planning (not now) on doing a feature VFX for anyone, what I'm planning to do is an Experimental short(really short, under 2 minutes) (done with others help) to learn and grow.

The experimental short I was hoping for would be a short trailer (kind spoof action film).

Hence even if its total rubbish no one would lose anything (except time and effort) but actually gain experience.

@bballplaya

do you think maybe you could shot some video of a guy against greenscreen (with tracking markers) perhaps with some camera movement, say a hand held dolly towards him, or something like that, maybe even throw in a gun prop or something. If you can't don't worry, worth asking anyway.

coool :)

Sorry forgot to check back to this. Unfortunately I don't have a greenscreen set-up, but eventually I will. If you're just looking for some footage to play around with, I don't have any way of getting that, sorry.

I'll start checking this thread more often.

Anhar, would you be interested in taking on a physics style short, like following the life of an object , like a ball? Bullets, mice, stamps have been done. I'm leaning away from the photo-real stuff and doing straight up CG.
I don't know how that would translate into a co-op though.
Might be too hard as a co-op I suspect.

I was actually thinking about a stylized look, not photoreal, kinda comic but action movie elements, I guess I was thinking of sin city (but in colour).

@ bballplaya, Any greenscreen footage to play around would be very much appreciated

@ Raptor, I could help out for sure, sound kind interesting, if you have stuff that needs modelling no problem.

Ok, played around with that footage, without stressing myself, I built a simple set, wacked some simple textures camera-matched it and rendered it (used faked GI).

The test came out alright, not too bad the camera match was just perfect no sliding, but I did chop of the dudes legs during the garbage matte process :)

I'm now thinking about using baking textures afer using FAKE GI, that way I can have my nice soft shadows and lighting without the longer render times.

Thanks to drummerboy for test footage!

Incidently the tutorial to Lukx ruins is up:

http://itsartmag.com/features/ruins/Ruins1.html

In his own words the secret is the "textures" + lighting, his one looks real because frankly the textures ARE real. lighting was even more basic.

Man, I need a digital camera badly.

If anyone is a dab hand at texturing (Maxon Bodypaint/photoshop etc) now would be a good time to put your hand up :)

Anhar

I'm starting to dive deeper into 3d. I'm working with Blender and I believe I have crossed the initial "what the hell?" marker.

I'm pretty excited because I'm progressing quicker than I imagined.

anhar, glad the footage worked out for ya.

i'd certainly be willing to help out with texturing in photoshop... i know PS well, but never knew exactly "how" to tile/wrap textures i created in maya or 3d studio.

i'd like to help out though, let me know... we have some people working on a story?

well, as far as a story goes, I've got zero clue on that issue, I was hoping for some kind of action movie trailer (maybe 1 and half mintues?)

dunno its open to ideas, anyone with an idea just pitch in.

look what I found, some guy used the Artium Sponza model (the one I used before) and made this render in Modo

http://content2.luxology.com/modo/301/clips/SponzaBig_01.mov

right click:

SAVE TARGET AS

thats the exact same model, but of course the guy actually bothered to render it properly, as you see the textures on that is not great, but my point is that good quality it not unreachable

hehe, camera tracking + greenscreen + CG set = fun

@drummerboy, cool, I'll have some stuff you should be able to help me with (photoshop work) gimme some time to get things lined up.

Sounds good man, that footage of the Sponza model looked real good, I'm sure you could come up with something solid.

Main thing is story, which i know I'm not good at it... if you want to (or want me to) create a post in the screenwriting forum and try to bounce some ideas around, that may be a good way to get the ball rolling.

Let me know, seems like a fun project to get in on.

yea that would be an excellent idea, I've done some brainstorming about a trailer like thing and hopefully I'll upload a basic storyboard, then all I'll need is the lines filled in, eg the voice over (classical "This summer..." type thing). [this is when as you said, you can take it over to that other guys and get some ideas flowing]

So gimme some time to draw up the initial storyboard, of course we can tweak it as needed (all crits welcome).

watch this space as they say :)

Sounds like a plan... I know how hard this kind of stuff is to get started, but let me know if you need some help, I think we make this work.

I'll keep my eye on this post...

Ok, I'm finalizing the storyboard, it has no narration or dialouge (that should hopefully be filled in by the other Users)

Summary:

* The story board should be up within 24Hrs.

* 4 VFX shots, 3 VFX shots @ 10 seconds, one Key VFX @ 20 Seconds

* VFX Initial breakdown, action plan.

So, what was the end result, live action & CG or just straight CG?

I'm interested in helping out. I'm using C4D and such...wouldn't mind throwing down on the titles and other mograph related goodness.
