7d lenses

Lenses like the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L are known as constant aperture lenses, meaning the lens does not suffer from" zoom ramping" when you change focal length.

The more I hear about this lens the more I like it for cine applications.
Does anyone know if nikon makes an equivalent and is it as good?

Though I have not used them first hand, my research has said that the Tamron and Sigma versions are comparable optically. However, when deciding which to buy I searched for vimeo videos using the lenses and was able to find rack focuses that breathed for both the Tamron and Sigma lenses.

The Nikon 24-70mm is fantastic. My buddy owns one and I've used it when I had my d70s (sold it). People rave about it. It would be tough to get working on a Canon EOS though, as there is no aperture ring. Someone would have to make an adapter where you can adjust the iris somehow manually.

No auto focus. Not sure about the VR.

Really?! I know of adapters that allow for exposure control. I was hoping AF and VR would work...

I would love to have the option to get the 14-24mm f/2.8 Nikon down the line if I didn't already get the Tokina and can go for broke. The Tokina might still be worth the purchase even with the Nikon. Both have been given expensive re-housing treatments for PL mount versions. The 14-24mm is arguably one of the best zoom lenses, ever.

How do you think this lens would be on the 7d. Would it compare well to the canon version and do you know if autofocus would still work for stills. I am looking to use it for video and stills and maybe to replace the kit lens.

Also there are some for over 800 bucks and some around 400, anyone know the deal with knockoffs on these lenses, cause I definitely do not want that.

Notes on the Sigma 24-70mm vs. Canon 24-70mm L:
- loud AF (do you use AF?)
- 82mm filter ring (potential cost increase if you aren't using a MB)
- slightly smaller and lighter
- flares pretty badly
- different rings of noticeably different diameter on the barrel (will this be a bother to you? or will you find it easier to distinguish?)

Is the Canon L glass worth the extra money? Best way to find out, as always - go to a camera store, strap one on, take some test footage and see what you think.

Thanks Michael for the review. I'm thinking the Canon is probably worth the price on this one. J that Tamron sounds good but would I lose auto focus for stills?

Not sure, not had time to look up adaptall mount, been thinking strictly cine

I hear you. I am mostly going video I'm sure but stills are also important to me and if I am going to drop big bucks on lenses I would prefer to get functionality for both.

The canon 24-70 is a fantastic lens. But honestly, after lugging it around for 10 days on my back, i have to admit it's extremely heavy and big. Since you are on the 7D and are on a 1.6x sensor, there are plenty of lighter lenses that, can give you all the quality you need to be crushed by H264 encoding, and allow you to handhold it without fear of carpel tunnel syndrome.
