I am going to make a TV commercial and was wondering if I jingle bell rock was public domain so i could use the tune. I actually came up with the tune with lyrics that matches the product, but then my friend heard it and said "hey that sounds like jingle bell rock" lol. I wasn't even thinking that, so that was weird how it turned out to be the tune of jingle bell rock. But anyone know if that tune is public domain or if it's copyright? Thanks!

no, it's not PD. Furthermore, if you wrote a song that "sounds like Jingle Bell Rock" you might easily run into a problem of plagiarism so you have to be very careful. I suggest searching through some network music sites and finding some cheap boxed music that fits your video.

Not that this fits your case - but if others are reading this, another thing to look out for is that even if a song is in the public domain, a performance or recording of it probably isn't.
So while you can legally use a song, you may have to record your own version (which sounded like you were talking about anyhow) or get the rights to a specific recording.

Just throwing that out there for anyone else that stumbles across this thread.
