7D Heat Warning

Oops, missed the part about the manual.

So how about indoors in the mid 70s? Any heat problems there?

Note: I hold no responsibility for any damage to your cameras should you decide to use coldpacks on them. None at all. Zero. Zilch. Ever.

In all seriousness, I wonder what percentage of cameras are having this issue. Could be a problem if it is ubiquitous.

I'm okay with this actually...

Nothing new with these. My D90 was giving the overheat warning last night while shooting clips WAY longer than I should have with it.

And ask Aram about the beer cozy he has to keep on the RED ONE eyepiece for COLD weather shooting :)

It's all in the game.

As a quick followup - after getting the heat indicator warning when shooting 720p/60 continuously today, I went back and shot 1080/24p continuously. Shot two 12 minute clips back to back with no problem - no warning light. I figured 24 minutes was enough for me...didn't want to push it any more.

So 720 is more cpu intensive presumably?

How long before you got the warning light at 720? and what was the weather like? static subjects/camera?

Sitting in a cafe right now, in the shade - about 82 degrees outside.
Shot two full clips, 12 minutes each... stoping only to erase the 4gb card and start a new clip.

The heat warning showed up towards the end of the second clip.
The back of the camera is slightly warm to the touch.

I just shut it off, will try again in a few minutes.

Shut off the cam for less than a minute - hit record again, it's been going for 7 minutes jsut fine.
No heat warning.

Top post on the second page.

Hmm... coming up to an Australian summer, this is making me a little nervous. Will be interesting to see how it handles the heat.

But, if there was no warning light, shouldn't there be no danger of pushing its limits?

As far as 5D vs. 7D regarding the heat issue, I can say that I've shot video with the 5D for 8-10 hours in 100 degree heat without any issue.

perhaps it has to do with the new weatherproofing of the 7D I have heard it is a water and dust tight body unlike the 5D could add to the Heating issue?

Who's going to put ther 7D in the freezer over night to test for less noise when the sensor is cold vs hot?

I was thinking this, too... I don't know much (anything) about thermodynamics (not even sure if that's the right term to be used) but it would seem logical to me that weatherproofing equals less ventilation, and less ventilation equals heat buildup.

That coupled with a double processor! You might be onto something.

umm...yeah... let us know how that works out for ya :undecided

Lets drill some holes in our 7ds!:2vrolijk_08:

^ along with being a motorcycle fabricator I am also an avid RC and electronics hobbyist and no joke this was actually my next thought... and install a small LIPO battery fan wire to board so it runs on camera battery when it is powered on^(now who wants to send their 7D for me to try:cheesy: (insert EVIL LAUGH!!!) lol

lol.. i shot for about an hour with my t1i... half that time I was like whats that little flashing red thing :) crapy the 7d has the same issues... i was indoors.

Probably - but given that a short while earlier I had shot those 12 minutes 720/60p clips back to back and gotten the heat warning light - I didn't feel I needed to see that light come on again.

For my purposes, I just needed to know I could shoot at least close to 30minutes of footage without a heat issue at 1080/24... so I stopped there.

I'll let someone else burn their pixels.

I have to agree. I also had the same issues with the d90 when I first got it. I quickly learned not to leave the camera on when not in use. Shoot your scene, turn it off while you set the next shots or explain ideas to your talent...

As you say...it is all part of the game...the little trade offs

Not Surprised

Not Surprised

I've use the Canon T1i for months now and this is something that I've dealt with when shooting 720 30p outside in the sun for prolonged periods. Shooting at night outdoors has not posed a problem yet though. It is pretty consistent if I keep the LCD on and run around getting clips at an event. Usually works fine for at least 30-45 minutes before I have to let it sit for about 10 minutes. I try to put it in a cool dark place but even if I put it in the bag out of the sun it's usually fine after a few minutes. And the grip does get extremely hot to the touch.

I really think the LCD is a big heat generator as well as the battery itself. I don't mean to discount the processors or the sensor for generating heat though. I have changed the battery while the warning symbol is on and it's hot enough that I can't put it in my pocket until it cools off.

I've been using a production 7D for the last two days and it hasn't happened at all. Although the temperature here in Florida has dropped a lot within the last week. I also haven't put the 7D through nearly what I would at a normal event yet though. Colder Climates are probably in much better shape.

What are the odds that Canon could fix it with a Firmware update? My current solution is to grab the second camera, but that is just a band-aid.

Maybe one of the reasons Canon improved the weather proofing on the 7D was so that we could spray it down with water when it started to overheat!!
