7D Decisions

I have been enjoying reading all the post on the 7D and some of the footage has been GREAT! I am considering purchasing the 7D and would like your advice. I currently own a HMC 150 which is a great cam corder if I were to purchase the 7D I would be keeping the HMC for longer shoots and a few other benefits it offers. I really need a news stills camera. My next option would be to Sell the HMC 150 when Scarlet arrives and not purchase the 7D I would use the Scarlet as my stills camera as well as video camera. I mainly shoot stock video with no sound and do an occassional wedding or event. When I stay stock I mean a lot of medical clips, people-lifestyle shots, some nature and a lot of indoor shooting as well. I know the Scarlet is Vapor ware as of now and we will know more Nov.30th which I can wait for but is this over kill for what I need or will the 120-150 fps allow me to earn back my money whith some great slow motion clips of sports and such. If I do get the 7D I will be purchasing some good lenses which is an investment as well. Thanks for your thoughts and advice as we all like to spend our hard earned money well!

You won't be able to get a Scarlet for another six months, at least. A year is a more realistic wait. If you need a camera now, buy now.

I was in the same boat as you are now. Mainly purchased the 7D because I need a new High resolution Still Camera first .Been browsing flickr for days now and it's a kick ass stills camera.
It's a big plus that it does HDvideo . ( got the 50mm f1.8 aswell ) So I'll definetly be experimenting with that .
The hmc 150 works very well for me , just got to light it right and it will sing like Whitney never sang before.
My 7d should come in this week...... abit nervous.

I don't "need" a camera right now that I could not wait but for what I shoot which would be the best buy for the type of productions I shoot. Anyone have any expirence shooting stills while recording HD? will the 7D blow away the stills capability of the 2/3 Scarlet because of sensor size or is the RED Raw code that good for stills as well. These are a few questions in my head.

I don't know about the Scarlet as a stills camera. The only picture I've seen of it was a mock up (not a working model) and looked to be about the same size as a haydite brick. It sure didn't look like something you could hang around your neck and take to Disney Land.

The Scarlet body will be at least 5 pounds, not including the lens or battery. I'll be picking one up when it comes out, but certainly not as a stills camera.

The Scarlet is a camera that, despite the "DSMC" label, is still intended to be a cinema camera first. It might take better stills than any other camcorder on the market, but the design is not optimized for still photography. The Scarlet is also significantly more expensive. In the October 30th announcement, Jim Jannard stated that since their previous announcement, Scarlet has been given a spec bump that will raise the price further. Their previous price quote for the lowest-end workable package was $3750. It'll presumably be $4000+ now. Other than that, everything else is pure speculation. Nobody will know how it will actually perform until it's actually in the hands of end users.
