Hi Guys,

last time I was trying to have a solid dark background using a large black cloth in the studio using my 7d and 17-55mm 2.8 and it was not possible. There was too too and too much noise in the black / dark areas. I could see the pixels really good. I was playing with the iso and exposure but the result was very very bad and no really black or darkness there.

We added some somke in the background and the result was ok. But I do not want to use everytime smoke. I want to have a really dark or black result on the background.

I think that the 7d has a big problem with dark areas. Maybe other dslr too. But I want to discuss about the 7d.

Was you able to do that using a 7d? If yes how?

But I still love my 7d :=)

You need to use a low ISO to completely lose your background to black, then light your subject very well to compensate. This is all about lighting, not the camera. Admittedly the 7D isnt great in the shadows but with decent lighting then a problem like this shouldn't be an issue.

as said above, low iso and good lighting. try not to go over 320...640 IF u must (not recommending 250 or 500 because 320 is cleaner than 250 and 640 is cleaner than 500). I shot something similar just the other day. I'll PM the vid to you since its not released as yet. I know there is 640 iso in there...but most i think was 320.

Between my camera settings and lighting, I often try to open up the low-mids and shadows a hair, and then crush 'em back down in post; I often use a bit more fill with the Canon than usual, shooting a hair flatter. Closing up the shadows in post does a nice job of plugging up the noise; the footage can really take some pushing around.

I don't do this for everything, more for "beauty" projects, music vids, etc. I tend to do those moves in after effects at 16 or 32 bit as well, you'll get less banding in the end project if you're really moving colors about.

As in all things photographic, test-test-test.
