7D and Adobe Premiere CS4 workflow in detail

Jumping in late here...

I realize there's no specific sequence for Canon footage, but if one were to throw a native Canon Codec movie on to a PP CS4 timeline - is there sequence that works a little better than the others?

So if I have 720p files and 1080p files and need to edit them together. What do you suggest? Editing at 720 or 1080?

The only thing that confuses me, is that the only setting that gives the right aspect ratio in CS4 are the HDV ones, however the resolution is 1440x1080 instead of 1920x1080. will this cause a big loss in detail?

you need to make your own Preset. Use "Desktop" for video setting. 1920x1080, square pixels, progressive 23.976.

Tried that, the images are a bit sharper which is nice, but the second the footage is rendered, something weird happens where the video playback gets SUPER squished. guess the Desktop presets aren't a strongpoint of Adobe.

PaPa, what preview codec do set in custom preset? Try V210 10-bit YUV codec and see if it stills stretches / squishes after render. That setting resolved my stretch / squish issues.

Here is the result with the settings suggested:

Also the quality of the image in the playback monitor is really garbage, even though it's been fully rendered. Very low quality even on high quality selection.

It seems as though the preview codec didn't save in the preset as V210 10-bit YUV but went back to the standard one. Now that i made sure it was V210 10-bit YUV the rendering time has DRAMATICALLY increased, sigh.

Running an I7 2.8 Quad with 12 gigs of ram.

So the good news is that the problem did not persist after changing playback codecs. the bad news is that it quadrupled the rendering time and now the video playback is so choppy that it's completely unusable. Going to try a different playback codec.

Intel IYUV codec is quite a bit smoother for me, however again, the video preview rendering time has increased. A lot. Sigh

Found a good one.

The preset for AVCHD 1080p24 gives us 23.978 fps, Square pixel format, 48000 audio and uses I-Frame only MPEG, which is a very smooth playback codec for video previewing.

Going to convert my project to this now and report back.

anywho, whatever it is, seems to be the best preset for the 7D on CS4. Rendered video in several sequence types, and this one had the best render times, with the best frame rate playback, etc...

I'm at a loss here. I tried the Avid Codec everyone is recommending ... but when I bring that into Prem I get no noticeable improvement in playback. I've followed all the steps. Hmm... AMD Phenom 940 Quad / 8gig Ram.

Everywhere I read people using the Avid codec and getting good results compared with dropping the Canon mov on the timeline?

It's frustrating because viewing either clip only peaks my CPU out at 60 to 75% which makes me think that my CPU isn't rocking, software can't understand the frames or my video card can't manage what the software is throwing at it.

Hmm, you are using DNxHD? at 115-8bit? Should be good with that.

Mind you, you also have quite a beefy system like me. Im running the I7 2.8Ghz with 12 gigs of ram @1600mhz and can play the native MOV files from the 7D back in real time without rendering, even with some grading on it in draft mode. You should be more than fine, wonder if there is a setting you got wrong somewhere?

Also, what project preset are you using? What graphics card do you have? Nvidia or ATI?
