7D/5D v. HMC-150

Alright, I'm considering getting rid of my HMC-150 and moving towards a HDSLR. I really want to hear your thoughts on both solutions. Should I keep my HMC or move to something like a Canon 7D. This is you chance to convince me.

Again, depends on what he's shooting; the GH13 would be the right answer for many things but if he needs ... um ... well, if he needs live HD monitoring, or an optical viewfinder, the Canons still have those advantages. Or if he needs super-wide wide-angle, etc...

I'm in the same boat. Heavily considering selling my HMC150 for a 7D, mainly because being able to change lenses and have that DOF. However, like the original poster, I'm looking for some convincing. Plus, I'll have some money left over from selling the Panny to buy some other gear for the Canon 7D. Does this make sense or am I crazy?

Jon

Oh yeah and it's mostly to shoot some short films and such.

ive got an EX1, HMC150, 5DmkII & T2i. i owned the 7D for a few days and returned it for a T2i.

for video purposes i cant think of any reason to spend the extra money for a 7D when the T2i is the exact same sensor making your photo & video images the same. for photos the 7D has better AF and a few other advantage but for video...?

i would take the money saved from buying the T2i and and put that extra 700-800 towards an eyepiece loupe, some glass or a support rig.

It was tongue in cheek.. I agree with you on both posts.

Sorry, guess I should have mentioned that I do a little photography as well so I gues was trying to get the "best" of both worlds. With this is in mind, would you still recommend the T2i over the 7D?

I've got the 7D...it truly is a "pro" camera. Its weatherproofed and just feels solid. Technically the Rebel is still a consumer camera. It also lacks a second LCD screen on the top to displace all ur info and records on SD cards. Nothing wrong with SD but they are very flimsy and easy to lose/break. CF's are more of a rugged pro route. Also, if you are shooting photos the 7D has an insane fps. I've literally held the shutter down for a minute straight and the things shot a ton of pictures without any delay. Then again you need fast cards to do this but still... the point is if your doing photography and also want a more rugged "pro" camera- I'd go with the 7D over the rebel. Sure you can save 7-800 bucks but i feel the 7D is just a better investment. Also- support rigs are a MUST for DSLRS. Without them your gonna get all sorts of weird jitters- different than a video camera because of the weird center of gravity. Without support ur footage is gonna be trash so invest in it. Redrock micro and Zacuto both make excellent rigs. I chose RR over Zacuto because they are a lot cheaper and have excellent build quality. Sure you can also use some of the Indian made stuff as well but I have yet to find a company that produces support that is as durable as the Redrocks.

Just my 2 cents....

Thanks Jon! I think I have made my choice and I think I will be going for the 7D. Only prob is that I was a Nikonian and have all Nikon lenses. I do have a 50mm Canon lens that I used with my manual Canon Ae-1. I've read about adapters that will allow me to use Nikon glass, but I lose AF. Don;t mind not having AF when doing video, but when I take pics I like to use AF for those time when I need a fast focus. I hate making decisions! :)

BTW, hope I'm not hijacking this thread but maybe this info is useful for all.

as a photo camera the 7D is a very nice feeling camera as far as ergonomics and body performance compared to the T2i. i have a D3, 1DmkIII, 1DmkIIn & 5DmkII. i initially thought i could let go of my mkIIn and replace it with the 7D but after using it (and my kid that shoots as well) we both concluded that the mkIIn was still a better experience (for photography) so i got back my mkIIn (that i had traded in), returned the 7D and bought the T2i with intentions to not use it as a photo camera but only video and a 2nd video DSLR to my 5DmkII.

with that said the 7D compared to the T2i is worth the extra money if you want to shoot photography. although the AF in the T2i is actually pretty darn good the focus "points" as so small (very little dots instead of squares) that you can hardly see them. the 7D's AF is a much better experience. im not fond of either of them above 1600iso for photography though but then again... im spoiled with my other cameras so my strong opinions here wouldnt necessarily apply to someone that hasnt played with higher end bodies. i still think the 7D is a nice camera but just not for me.

if you get the T2i then you almost need to get the battery grip as well IMO. the camera is so small that there is not much to hold on to if you dont have the grip especially if you put a larger lens on. with grip it feels pretty good but the 7D with grip feels still a little better.

IQ is identical on both for photos and video. if your serious about photography though like you said, then "yes" i think its worth the extra for the 7D because it does feel like a real camera.

thanks very much David! :)

your welcome!

on another note. my buddy just bought a brand new T2i and i just found a big white dot/pixel right in the middle of a video he just did. i think his ISO was set to around 1000iso. its screaming! a cluster for sure. he is going to send it in for fixing (still under warranty). be sure whatever you get that you check closely for any hot or stuck pixels.

my 5DmkII was all good up till a few months ago but recently has developed a bright red pixel in the lower left. i was going to send it in but opted for a plugin that im going to get for FCP that easily fixes it. it sucks but im convinced that they will pop up again and im out of warranty so ill live with it and just fix my final edits. make sure you buy from a place that will easily let you return it for a good one if you have a problem.
