720pn ON P2 IS IT Any Good For Editing

I will be hiring or buying a dvx200 for my next shoot. I have noticed that you get double the amount of footage on a p2 card if you shoot in 720pn mode.

I shot 720p on my last shoot with the JVC hd100 with no problems. But i have no experience with 720pn mode. What is PN mode ???

I am editing with Edius which handles P2. One thing that i like about dvcpro HD is it is not long GOP so editing is more slick. Is 720pn OK to edit ???

Would the footage shot with the JVC in 720p HDV be as good or worse than the HVX 720pn ??

It captured 24 discrete frames, and does not automatically remove redundant frames because none are captured, ie in the HVX200's special mode "720/24PN" only the frames per second are recorded to the P2 card.

720/24pn is a dream to edit, at least in FCP. Been doing it since March.

Err, surely you mean an Hvx200!

Well, P is Progressive and N is Native. I'm sure somebody will be along shortly witht the full technical low down on 'Native' but basically it only records the frames that you see i.e. nothing redundant hence it needs less room ergo you get more onto your P2 card!

I've just spent 2 hrs editing 720pn in FCP and had no problems so I can't see you having any in your NLE!

I'd say worse coz its HDV

Indy... in India and currently up to 268Gb of 720p/n footage shot so far!

I'm at work so I can't look it up, but I believe Barry Green has a great explanation of all the recording formats in his HVX book. If someone could post his explanation (without plagerizing Barry too much :)) that would be cool.

Dont forget that in the PN mode you get no audio recorded in variable framerates which you do get with P mode.

It may be just the audio issue buit the 720P slo mo footage I have processed in cinema tools and played back in FCP looks more pleasing to me... perhaps 'feels' is a better way to put it, it feels better.

The lack of audio when capturing 720PN is a huge hinderance to me. Why oh why did they choose to cripple a complete format????

You only lack audio in under and over-cranked stuff (do you really want super fast/slow audio?) Everything in PN mode is great.

720pN is simply the best editing experience I've had in years. No fields. No redundant frames to extract. Avid takes it as is. It's wonderful.

I agree... 720pN24 mode is excellent... If you are shooting fast or slow-motion, dont forget to switch back.. I've messed that up before... No big deal that there's no audio for VFR

24 PN is great. I shoot a lot of 30 PN because it plays so nicely with NTSC. (No 3:2 to deal with) Not quite the film look but really close, less strobing. If my HVX were a human friend of mine, I'd buy it a beer.

BTW, just bought a Seagate 120 gig bus powered drive to dump my footage to in the field (through my g4 powerbook). I am currently shooting nature realated footage (Just got back from Yosemite) and plan to be shooting a bamboo forest and waterfalls in Maui shortly with this setup. My girlfriend..er, uhm assistant will be loaded down with lots of plastic bags and paper towels. Evenings will be tough work looking at all that footage with the martini glasses not far away...
