720p or 720pn

Up to this point I've been shooting in 720p and been very happy with the results. I switched to 720pn for a test to see if there was a difference. The benefit that I see is I gain a lot more record time on my P2 cards and firestore. Are there any downfalls? Can someone explain the technical difference between the two?

The HVX doesn't send video out through the FW port in PN. That is probably the only downfall and it is not a very bad one...I highly recommend using PN rather than P or PA. You never have to remove a pulldown. Just remember to set your sequence preset to 23.98.

This makes sense. I was wondering why I couldn't get a PN signal to my Firestore. Firestore says set the recorder to pn and just send the "p" signal through the firewire.

I don't see any reason to record 720p again since I gain so much p2/firestore space

If you're using the variable frame rate feature shooting in 720pn do you still get the space savings?

Yes.

When shooting to the cards, I'm hard-pressed to think of a situation where it WOULDN'T be the right choice to shoot 720pN, if you want 720.

You use the 720/24p preset in FCP and in the log/transfer window make certain the "remove pulldown or duplicate frames" is unchecked.

Reasons for 720p instead of 720pN:
1) if you want to record audio during variable-frame-rate takes
2) if you want step-printing-looking footage, instead of slow-mo or fast-mo
3) if you're recording or monitoring out the firewire port, instead of strictly to the P2 cards.
