720 24pn Triple Workflow Questions

I have been shooting all my footage in 720 24pn, now it time for the "workflow check" to make sure I doing in right.

P2 to HDD (no problems)

Film to FCP 5.1.4 or the laesst befor Studio 2 (no problem)

Three outputs: DVD, Web , and some stock clips.

1. DVD:
I'm using the hvx200 @ 720p 24pN. I know in FCP the first step to making the 24p dvd is to export using current settings, then bring into compressor then finally dvdsp and you have 24p dvd, which will look great I hope played on TV 's using DVD player.

Can anyone add to this like bit rate info etc or other problems I might face.

2. Output from FCP to QT for web movie:
After going bind here reading a lot of post, I came close to an answer but the thread stopped.

Again hvx200 @ 720 24pN out of FCP using QT, which is a requirement of the job, but the end product looks like crap even using High Bandwith settings for Download. I need some good export setting for QT for export of 3-5 min video download not streaming in the 50mb range.

3 Stock Footage Clips of 30sec to 60 sec shot again at 720 24pn in 24p timeline FCP output should be for normal delivery based on your experances with agencys?

Your help to clarify and confirm a lot of this will be greatly apprediated.

Thanks in advance

As to number 1:

Bit rate is a factor tied to the total length of the video in minutes and treatment of audio.

It's part art and part science.

Without knowing more, I can't advise you

David,

Thanks for the responce, video is 60 min total and dolby sound all out of DVDSP, if that helps.

Thanks Again,

A target of about 6.5 with a maximum of 7.2 mbps with 192 Dolby2/ac3 audio works best in those situations.

Two pass VBR in either BitVice 1.7 or Compressor.

Thanks David, your info on dvd's make a lot of things clearer.

Now the next question

2. Output from FCP to QT for web movie:

Thanks in Advance

I'm the wrong person to ask about web exports.

But you haven't indicated which CODEC you used for the web export. And I don't know what "crap" means in terms of quality.

Help us out with details and a good description.

David,

Thanks for the reply the codec I was using was H264, but I did find some of the answers which are on the Ken Stone Site, You have to read the page and then bring it up to date with what CODEC we can use today, but most of the stuff I followed and the movie is now playing great.

Link to Ken Stone Site:
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/qt_movies_from_fcp.html

Ken Stone is right the QT CODEC has but upgraded over the years, but the defalt settilng when exporting has not, and that can put your film in what I call a CRAP state not playing or looking like a pixilated mess.

Again David, thanks

Arrow,

I always export a master file from FCP, then make the converts from that file. It has just been more consistent for me. For example, when I open my 720p file in QuickTime Pro I make my h.264 file from there using the preset settings. The results are great.

Andrew,

Yes, the one thing I have learned about this is to make a master before going out to QT.

It is amazing that Apple can come up with all this QT stuff and yet not upgrade it defalts in QT Pro to bring it up to todays standards. The defalts are at least 5 years old. The article on Ken Stones site brings it all in perspective.

Again thanks for you assistance,:dankk2:
