General 70D and my thoughts on it +Samples

Hi
Thanks for a really great write-up! Quick question, how does the build quality compare to a 7D. Speculation:2vrolijk_08: - what's your guess on how long before this auto-focus shows up in a C100 type?

Thanks!

The build is quite nice. As good as the 7d I'd say. Mixed it with the C100 on a short this past week. Here is a few grabs. Two of the shots are 70d. You guess which (never mind the DVXuser compression):

I think the next releases of the C100/300 would have the dual layer pixel sensor. But my guess would be we won't see those until 2015. Maybe Canon will release a C105, but I don't count on it.

My guess would also be 2015, maybe late 2014 if they started developing the new sensor (with this tech built in) when the C300 was released.

Nice footage! The part where he gives up running is 70D??? I mostly keep cameras for a long time but if I were to sell my 7D body (to get 70D) what would a good price be. Camera is perfect now. It rolled out of bag and I was surprised that it needed, and got, a new shutter and complete checkout through Canon CPS. I am in LA, is Craigslist the best way to go? Thanks in advance for your opinion(s).

Ok, just did a bunch of interviews this weekend, and I really really love the 70d, and also found out the audio/video are SYNCed, not like before where the audio is 2 frames faster... this is exciting, no more worrying about synching audio/video like in t2i, 5d, etc. :)

audio / video 2 frames faster? sounds like a bug, which camera was that??

Im also really curious about AF for interviews.. Do you know, if you were shooting a CU head shot with relatively shallow DOF, would the camera remain focussed on the eyes, is it reliable? Thats one Ive been wondering about..

Thanks

The audio with almost all DSLRs is between 1-2 frames out of synch. You can see this for yourself by shooting a slate clapping, then look at your audio track to see where the slate hits versus what you seen in the image track of your video.

Any guess as to how the Nikon 7100 would compare to the 70D and the GH3? I'm thinking of picking one up as a b cam as I have all Nikon lenses, but there seems to be much less written about it as regards video. What I've read sounds good, though, wondering if anyone has any real world experience?

this woukd a good video comparison of Nikon vs Canon. http://youtu.be/bOM4r1gxsbs

Thanks mdifilm, good video. But like a lot of what I'm reading on this cam, it's very oriented towards stills, so I'm not sure what applies to the camera's video capabilities. Might post over in the Nikon section, see if any first-hand users are over there.

Stu, it covers video as well, I watched through it and it covered the different video capability of both.

Dusty: have you tried using the 70D for green screen? Would it key better than the other canon DSLRs?

Which lenses are you guys using with the 70D, that work well with the autofocus? I was using it with the Canon 24-70 I, and it was hunting like crazy. I'm looking at the 24-70 II or the 24-70 Sigma. Anyone have experience with either of those lenses with the 70D?

Dusty, thanks for your review on the 70D, when you are using non STM lenses, how's the rotors stepping noise? Is it loud? with the 50mm f1/8 and the 55-250mm lenses, I can hear the AF rotor noise fairly clear, which it may be recorded into the field recorder like the Tascam DR-60D when it is placed below and have the shotgun mic above the camera...

I too have the 70d and really like it. You can quickly disable the AF completely in 3 ways - hold down the back button AF (once released it resumes), tap on the AF icon on the screen in the lower right, or you know what? Hit the FLASH button that triggers the pop-up flash and it will stop / start AF. This is what I use the most as you don't need to take your hand off the lens if you're using it to steady as I do.

I am doing a test tonight to show you all the focus motor and IS noise of the following lenses; will report back in with a Youtube video. I am goind to set 2 near objects and 1 further away and "touch focus" on the screen so you can hear the AF/IS noises.
You will also get an idea of the focus speed.

Lenses I'm doing:
18-55 STM
18-135 STM
Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS
Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC
Canon 24mm 2.8 IS
Sigma 30mm 1.4 "Art" (newer model)
Canon 85mm 1.8
Canon 70-200 IS II 2.8
Canon 135mm F/2

I have a 17-55 2.8 Canon on the way so I will be able to test it again soon. Hope this helps somebody trying to decide on lens choices.

Would you like me to do 2 tests; one with onboard audio and the 2nd with a shoe mounted (with shock mount) Zoom H1 with deadcat? The latter might emulate more "real world" run and gun..

Let me know if there's any interest in this.

I will tell you the Sigma 17-50 is pretty damn noisy, and the Tamron 24-70 VC is suprisingly quiet.
