60fps at 1080p... true or false?

Sorry about the dumb question, but what does the BM device capture? Is it uncompressed footage?

Completely depends on the software you're using. Capture to prores, use blackmagics own software to capture to uncompressed dpx, their own blackmagic codec, my personal favorite, using Cineform's HDLink to capture directly to cineform, or a myriad of other software.

Tether club!

None of the current popular DNxHD, ProRes, uncompressed recorders will do 50/60p as none of them have working dual link or 3G-SDI.
Only more expensive Cinedeck and Sony SR-R1 can do it.

I think the question was can it record S-Log in 60p using the SINGLE sdi-cable?

Should also work- just camera needs to be set to 3G and you need 3G SDI recorder- Cinedeck or Sony SR-R1.

There is simple rule:

4:2:2 above 30p (60i) needs dual link or 3G SDI
Any 4:4:4 needs dual link or 3G SDI
50/60p 4:4:4 needs 2x 3G-SDI- but nothing can record such a format yet (Sony SR-R1 has enough speed and power, but it's not enabled yet, Cinedeck also can in theory (it has 2x 3G-SDI), but I think there is issue with processing power)

Dual link is old. 3G SDI, which was introduced recently allows for the same as dual link, but uses one cable. New Sony SR /2 decks support 3D recording (2x 4:2:2 up to 30p- I think) on one tape over dual link or over 3G SDI. Many new cards (BM, AJA, BF) allows to capture 3D from SR tape in one go- over 3G SDI or dual link. GV Strom 3G card can do it into many formats (with Ediu 3D beta)- eg AVC-I, MPEG2, HQX ....

Chris you can record 720p internally to cards and do post zoom blow-up of 50% to match 1080p. The results might actually surprise you, I have been doing it a lot in many of my projects and productions. Watch the Movember Episodes - any slo-mo was 720p blown up to 1080p.

The Gemini will record this now, but you will need two 512 cards to do it. They record simultaneously, alternating frames card to card, but combining is actually easy.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread.

Will the F3 record 1080p@60 or 50fps 422 without the paid upgrade ?

I'm currently recording off board to a BM Shuttle v2 is there any way of recording 1080p @60 or 50fps to this device even if its just 422 or even 420?

I'm hoping to pick up the Odyssey 7Q when its becomes available if the shuttle won't do the higher frame rates @ 1080p.
Will I still need the paid rgb upgrade for the F3.

No, the BM Shuttle isn't a 3G or Dual link device - it doesn't have the bandwidth or hardware to do 1080 50/60p.

The F3 has two methods of doing S-Log: The paid upgrade S-Log mode, and the picture profile S-Log added in firmware v1.4. So, you should have access to the latter mode without paying for the upgrade.

Should do, from memory you don't need the 4:4:4 upgrade to have access to dual-link (which is what you need to send the 60p stream out from the camera).

Not sure if that is the case. You can turn on the "A" port which gives you 3G through that single SDI connection. Maybe there is a way of doing it but I haven't seen it documented.

One thing I still don't get is we set the camera to 1080i how does the ext recorder recognise or convert it to progressive frames?

Hey Timur, Yes it does. :) Slog 422 was enabled on the latest firmware, so you can get 60p out of the dual link ports.

Notes from Sony's site :

  • When the CBK-RGB01 option is installed in the PMW-F3:
    • S-Log 4:2:2 10-bit 1080 23.98p/25p/29.97p output on HD-SDI (Link-A)
    • S-Log 4:2:2 10-bit 1080 50p/59.94p output on HD-SDI dual link or 3G-SDI

Andy I know this subject is quite old and I'm sorry to drag it up again and again. Could you help clarify this a little further ?

Can we output 1080p@50fps 422 slog on a non cbk-rgb01 F3 (firmware ver1.4)via a single cable(1.5g) to a shuttle v2?

Woh that was quite a mouthful :)

Eddavid quotes in post#12 that he was able to do it with a BM Ultra Studio 3d via 1.5g

Surinder Singh.

It's impossible to send 1080p60 via a single 1.5g cable on any camera, regular HD-SDI only has the bandwidth for 1080p30. Dual link (2x 1.5g) or 3G-SDI (which is equivalent to 2x 1.5g) are necessary for transporting an uncompressed 1080p60 video stream.

Thank you for clarifying.

To clarify, have you found a way to get both A and B ports active without the CBK-RGB01 upgrade?

Dear Friends,

I am answering this question from memory.

My personal F3 has the upgrade so I cannot test it myself.

Even without the upgrade, I was told (by Sony) that the F3 can output 1080p59.94.

Again, from memory, from last year, you will have to enable the A + B Ports, and set the camera to output 1080i59.94.

In this configuration, the A + B ports output 1080p59.94 in 4:2:2 (and not 1080i59.94).

I really do not like answering questions from memory, but I wanted to help. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Since it is 1080p59.94, most recorders will not be able to handle it. For example, our nanoFlash can't, but our Gemini 4:4:4 can and the upcoming Odyssey7Q will also.

And our recorders will upres the 1080p59.94 YCbCr to 1080p59.94 4:4:4 RGB prior to recording the file.

We do this upres, using the very intelligent, and compute-intensive process using the weighted average of the adajcent pixels. It works very well.

We do this since the generally available software programs that accept full uncompressed DPX files do not work with 1080p59.94 in 4:2:2 YCbCr, just 4:4:4 RGB.

We will have an opton, in the upcoming Odyssey7Q to record 1080p59.94 in 4:2:2 YCbCr, in compressed Avid DNxHD also. And this will be available in the Gemini 4:4:4 also as soon as we get Avid DNxHD finished, expected later this summer.

Respectfully,
