60fps at 1080p... true or false?

Allright! I must be blind or stupid. I hear on many blogged videos and sites claiming that the F3 through dual link 422 can do 60fps at 1080p. Do I not see where it is in the settings? I have the Gemini 444 with S-log and 1.3 firmware. I must be missing something... can someone show this avid user of the F3 a thing or two?

According to Timur who did a test with it from a while ago..... "You activate 1080 59.94i and the dual link should be spitting out 422 1080p 60p. you may need to select 1.5g 422 in the video setup menue, the third or fourth one from the top in the menus."

Do you mean to use the "Remove Option" first and then change the settings? I did remove the option and the only option I got (after setting the "System" to 59.94i which here has no 60p option) is "1.5G YPbPr422 & Video" I still recorded interlaced 59.94 footage... no 60p.

Is that the way you instructed?

I have tested yesterday Output 422&Video (Not S-Log) and I set 59.94i, I connect dual link to my Gemini and works fine but Gemini shows 30fps not 60psf in the screen (there is a small square where shows the frame rate that it´s detecting. I am not sure if I am recording 60p...

I recorded on my Blackmagic card and it works just fine. I hope the folks at Convergent Design puts up another firmware to support the increased frame rate.

Dear Friends,

At this time, with our initial firmware release for the Gemini 4:4:4, we do not support 1080p60.

This is a planned feature that we will be adding as soon as practical. We fully realize the importance of recording 1080p50, 1080p59.94, and 1080p60.

The output of the Sony F3, when in 1080p60 mode, is 1080p59.94, 4:2:2.

We are working to add dual recording to the Gemini 4:4:4. This is simultaneous recording to two SSD's.
This is a prerequisite for enabling 1080p60 support.

More info:

The Gemini 4:4:4 also accepts 4:2:2 signals, as many cameras output 4:2:2 and can't support 4:4:4.

When 4:2:2 is sent to the Gemini 4:4:4, we intelligently upres the 4:2:2 to 4:4:4 before we record it to the DPX files.
This process takes the weighted average of the adjacent pixels to calcuate the missing pixels.
This is a very good, high-quality upresing.

One may wonder why we do this.

The DPX File Format is a SMPTE standard. This standard supports both 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 recording options.

However, in our initial search for software that processes DPX files, we could not find any widely used software that supported 4:2:2.

Thus, we added support to upres 4:2:2 to 4:4:4.

We are currently researching the best way for us to support 1080p60 (and 1080p59.94, and 1080p50).

And to answer one question: S-Log does not have to be unloaded from the Sony F3, just turn it off so you can see the 1080p60 options.

I hope this helps.

Cinemachan hi,

could you tell us a bit more...which blackmagic card did you use for recording 1080p 60p and what was your workflow...any additional info on this setup would be more than welcome...thanks

In the latest firmware, vs 1.31, the F3 can output 1080 59.94p via the dual link connectors in Video & S-Log. Just set the camera format to 1080 59.94i.

Andy

Hey Timur, Yes it does. :) Slog 422 was enabled on the latest firmware, so you can get 60p out of the dual link ports.

Notes from Sony's site :

  • When the CBK-RGB01 option is installed in the PMW-F3:
    • S-Log 4:2:2 10-bit 1080 23.98p/25p/29.97p output on HD-SDI (Link-A)
    • S-Log 4:2:2 10-bit 1080 50p/59.94p output on HD-SDI dual link or 3G-SDI

I can confirm now 1080p 60fps in s log.
I just tested it going from the sony 1.5 422 option - s log to the blackmagic design ultrastudio 3d

So are you guys saying that one could record s-log 4:2:2 1080/60p slow motion via single sdi-cable using the 3G SDI -connection?

Yes... S-Log in 60P! Believe it.

Set your camera at 1.5gig 422 & S-Log, go and change to 1080i (yes... 1080 "i") and capture your footage using dual link SDI cables to your Black Magic UltraStudio 3D and set your capture settings to 59.94 at 1080p. DONE DONE DONE. make sure you have a drive that can capture it at that speed. I have a dual SSD drives in my laptop. Or if you don't have a BM (i said BM heh heh) UltraStudio 3D then use a BM desktop solution like a Decklink card.

I think the question was can it record S-Log in 60p using the SINGLE sdi-cable?

Sorry about the dumb question, but what does the BM device capture? Is it uncompressed footage?

Hi,

Can this be done with the Samurai over single cable? Do I have to tell the Samurai to do the pull down?

Thanks

Steve

I use tekkron batteries with the ultrastudio 3d and it's kind of portable with 50 ft bnc cables running to the camera. well tethered like the big boys do it, but still you can record to pro res 422 hq that way straight with the included capture tools with the BM device.
