heard that there was a download for transferring files from the memory card to the my Mac.

whats the best to to transfer files?

Thanks

Yo, you don't capture files, you copy them. Capturing is for tape. Ha.

The way I recommend is
1) copy to a hard drive
2) eject card
3) transcode those files into a format you need, or use Final Cut's plug in to bring them in. If you are on Avid just do a straight import.

Don't ever transcode directly off a card. Also try to use a fast hard drive to do all this like a Raid. It will speed up both copying and transcoding. It will even speed up how good your editing systems performs.

I find my internal eSatas and even external FW400 drives are fine for copying and transcoding. A Raid is nice but not really necessary for DSLR footage.

Also, look into 5DtoRGB for transcoding - it bypasses Quicktime (it may be mac only??) and gives superior results. It's much slower than MPEG Streamclip but - especially for low light or getting every bit of detail from your footage - it's worth the time.

Not necessary but ... it speeds things up even more. That was my point.

if you're using CS5, you don't need to transcode: it can work with the files as they come out of the camera, and the final image will actually be better if you don't transcode

Im on a IMac when i put the card in the reader it doesnt show up on my desk top...do i have to install the canon software, Kinda didnt want to. My question is why do i not see the card is there a recommended software / reader

I installed Canon only the Canon EOS Utility and Picture Sytle Editor through custom install on the CD. The card should show up no matter what, even without but I recommend installing what I installed.

Sometimes my card doesn't show up but it might be because my system is old and is acting like and old man. So what I do is restart. (but this is only a problem if I've been running my computer for a very long time like days)

Also I find if I plug in the card reader first, then put the card into the reader then it works. It doesn't work if I put the card in the read and plug in the reader with the card. I don't know why but must be a mounting order reason.

Hope this helps. Hit us up if you have another question.

I have a new system all my other cards and flash drives show up...But my canon 60d cards will not...all my 60D cards have been formatted on the 60D. I cant get them to show up for some reason

Try installing what I recommended and restart. Let me know if it works. If not we might have to do some googling..... if that's a word.

That's bizzare- I've never heard of anyone not being able to read a card from a Canon camera (where other cards DID work). Try using one of your cards that DO work on your computer in the camera, and see if it works on your computer? Maybe your camera is faulty and corrupting cards?

He didn't say other cards that have been used in the camera work. Only that his computer reads SD cards.

newer macs will not see memory cards from a canon or nikon DSLR when they are inserted.
You must install the software to import.
