5K iMac $2,499 !

no offense but if ur buying apple products and expecting anything to be priced reasonably your adhering to the wrong brand. 30% premium for the name, save a ton of money and just build your own PC editing rig.

Interested in building a PC for editing. Would you mind showing me how I can build a similar set up with a 5K display for less then $2499?

All Imac displays are way too crushed contrasty and saturated to be useful for image evaluation other than maybe for resolution. 5K or not Im still going to be using my Panasonic Plasma HD display for dynamic range vs any of these budget UHD displays or 5K imacs.

Just as with cameras resolution is just part of IQ. It would be good to know which UHD or 5K displays offer the greatest contrast ratios and dynamic range. The crop is far too new and murky but better testing and analysis woyuld be helpful so that we have options to replace current displays like plasmas.

Agreed. All kinds of artificial sweeteners are going into the imac soft drink. Also videos are generally going through the graphics card which is oriented to an RGB output. This has nothing to do with YUV or traditional video monitoring for grading. PLasma is also tricky as well though. A standard is only a standard when people agree on it. In the case of plasma the consensus is not universal and there are great variations from one to the next.

Hm for the lulz, I went ahead and popped open newegg.

So turns out to build a pc with comparable, if not slightly better specs, it would cost

cpu - 209
mobo - 50$
gfx (better than the one in this thing) 200
case/psu, ~120
memory - 80
HD - 60
misc (keyboard, mouse, windows 7) - 150

Soo grand total of 869.00

Okay so your paying 1631.00 for the display. Lets be clear, you are not going to be able to edit anything @ 5k resolution with the specs that thing has.
So I guess if its able to be used as an external display or something for a much better/more powerful system then go for it.

Or maybe using photoshop. To be honest Idk what you would use this thing for but its certainly not going to be manipulating 5k video.

Edit: weird, i wonder why they use a mobile graphics card in this, i guess its for the form factor of the thing.
Edit2: holy crap its thin - yeah thats why.

So in other words, the iMac is $869 less than an equivalent custom PC and not 30% more expensive or am I missing something?

The point is, your getting suckered into paying for a 2,500 dollar machine with a 5k display that you can't do anything with at actual 5k resolution. Instead of wasting 1600 dollars to read word documents at 5k res, I'd suggest spending that $ on making a 3x more powerful computer in the first place. Its marketing hype. But hey, its your money, spend it how you want to. This is a heck of a deal for someone who wants to say they have a 5k monitor. Maybe 5k is a game changer for photographers editing photos, or something.

I have a $7000 MacPro with $900 full off 64gigs ram and a $1600 4k monitor. Guess what? I love it. But then again, I make 2 to 3 times that a week. Week in, week out, between stills and video.

Two weeks into your build you stated above and you will have some issues whether it be a virus or some other issue. My Mac will work for as long as I have it as it did the day I plugged it into the wall.

I like how you don't complain, and you just make it happen.

18 yrs of my life was on PC. Suffered like the rest. Since I moved to Mac, I am pretty happy. Don't want to waste my time fighting the ills of windows.

Half of the time these days on the road I am cutting on a macbook pro. Even if you are a large studio, there is an application for the iMac. Wonder how and why people are trashing the new iMac. Please tell us why, so that we can be educated. :)

The 5K iMac is $2,299 at B&H with free expedited shipping compared to $2,499.99 for the Dell 27" 5K monitor.

BTW Dell also charges me 7% NJ sales tax and B&H does not.

Thats fantastic. Unfortunately I have no idea how what you are saying applies to this discussion whatsoever, outside of telling us how you paid 7,000 for a macpro that I could prrroobably build for 5,000, but that in ur circumstances saving money isnt an issue since you know, pulling in that 24,000 dollars a week. Which is impressive, I wish I could make 1.1 million dollars a year like you.

Edit: oh and I don't run anti-virus nor have I ever had any virus issues. I'm super lucky what can I say. PS - I wasn't aware macs were impervious to viruses?

I like how you don't complain, and you just make it happen.

Well yeah, pretty hard to complain when your a millionaire right? I'd probably make all kinds of things happen.

Strange, been using/building pcs for nearly as long and I've never had an issue whatsoever. I guess I'm just lucky. I might play the lotto tomorrow.
Not even trashing it, I'm pointing out that they are borderline scamming people into buying a 5k monitor for 1,600 dollars that they cant use (efficiently) for anything that you would even need the 5k for based on the specs that come with it. (well i guess you could put a sick screensaver on it)

--------------------

Again, my point is if you are technically savvy you can always and I mean always save a bunch of money by building your own PC. Its been like that forever. Also as an added bonus in addition to saving money I can pick and choose which component to upgrade in the future.
And my other point is that this 5k solution is not a solution at all and seems more like a marketing gimmick to get rid of their old excess hardware (the graphics card being used is older) by pushing the 5K Logo.

But alas, apple supporters would probably drown clutching their macs all the way to the bottom of the ocean before even considering anyone else's point of view.
Which is good business for apple, I mean people keep buying new iphones right?

But I think the issue here is that I'm the type of person who changes his own brakes for 100 bucks instead of paying a shop 500 to do it. It would appear I'm way out of my element in this thread.

Merica!

Never said I worked 52 week. But I average about 35 week per year. Top was 46 weeks. Leaving tomorrow for 2 solid weeks in three different states. return home and then leave for 3 days in another state. Have Xmas, then leave for another state. Make it home to kiss my wife for new years, then 3 solid weeks again. Then I force myself to take a two week off.

So Silnekiller. While you think I'm some millionaire, I'm really not. I've made millions, sure. But you say "I wish I could make X amount of $'s". Why wish? Why not try? I did. Not from wishing though.

See Silenkiller, this thread was about the iMac 5K and those interested in it. But we all sat back and waited for somebody to come in and basically insult everyone as to my "we're throwing our money away" when we can just build a PC. Somebody even said, "Don't go there". Dude, lots of us have built PC's. I have. Many of them. I know LOTS of professionals. LOTS of them! Not a single one works on a PC. One of my buddies I went to school with 20 years ago, who is truly a millionaire and only has to shoot like 20 weeks to make that, could build the biggest and best PC money could buy. He shoot for Apple, Sony, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Budweiser, Yamaha, Microsoft, all sorts of big time accounts. He uses MAC. Another buddy, top celebrity shooter in LA that I often do motion project with, works on a MAC. He bought his studio for a million, in cash. My closet competitor in my field, works on a MAC while flying to a job in his private jet (I must me doing something wrong as I don't have a private jet). He's my buddy though. All of the ad agencies that I deal with, they all work on MACS. All of them. My sister, who runs and audio visual production company, all MAC based.

Now what I'm saying is not that the MAC is any better. It's just that they work, day in and day out. And in 9.8/10 machines, they work they day you retire them as they did the day you plugged them in. And that is what the professional requires. And those professionals don't really care about how much money they could have saved building a PC. Besides, we will write off the difference during tax season.

Then, there are those that are not technically savoy to build and maintain a PC. I'm often asked, "What computer should I buy for my photo or video business". I ask them what they want out of a computer and how much they know about computers. Most want headache free and easy computer to work with. I always recommend a MAC. Months later they always thank me.

As for the TOPIC of this thread, the iMac 5K, what is not to like? Look at it. Without turning it on, it's beautiful. 5K for photographers is GREAT! We all know 50 megapixel DSLR's are coming, that 5K monitor will be a god send for those shooters. And for people moving into 4K video, just the same. A nice self contained sleek beautiful machine with no hassle. And what the 5k iMac will do is force other companies to compete and offer their comparison. Kinda like the iPod did. Kinda like the iPhone is. What is not to like about that? Hell, I have a monster MacPro and a Macbook Pro and I have to keep my wallet in the car when I walk into an Apple store or I will walk out with the iMac 5K.

Mac guys just love MAC. But we're kinda tired of PC guys jumping in forums telling us how "stupid" we are. All while you're wishing that you made the money I make and all of the money my buddies and clients are making.........It's the day after Thanksgiving. I have a shoot to go to. Think about that.

That Dell is $2500 just for the monitor. Who here thinks that monitor will be selling for $1500 or less all because of the iMac 5K? I'll start. ME!!! I DO.

Honestly, you should worry less about telling us how much money you make and more about the SPECIFICATIONS of the computer. My point stands, good luck editing ANYTHING that benefits from a 5k monitor on a rig that has 8gb of ram, a gpu from 2012 and a i5 processor. Its poorly matched. Its like buying a Ferrari with a lawn mower engine in it. Makes no sense.

Funny, you tell me how im bashing mac people, how macs are the industry standard "not to go there" yet no one likes to address the black and white facts that those specs ... suck.
Throw as many friends with private jets and million dollar studios into the conversation you want, its still not a smart buy.

Oh and that dell monitor price is already reduced and serves to plug into a more powerful machine, one that you can actually do something with 5k rez.

FYI, I also am very aware of the concept of having something thats easy to use and requires little maintenance. I'm sorry but how can anyone not be able to use windows 7? Sweet christ.
And no, none of my pc's ever suffer from this "random pc self-destruction" everyone is implying comes with a pc.

Just because everyone wants to jump off a bridge doesn't mean I have to do. Not sure why its an issue taking criticism on something that needs criticized. Did you buy a fleet of these already or something? Lordy.

oh and as your post implies, yes, im hella jealous of your gold-laden life style. I might actually lose sleep tonight over it. I wish I could be you.

6 macs later .... started w/a b&w running fcp 1, and now only my older macs work w/o any problems, including 3 macpro's and a goodwill'ed titanium pb, I find it hard to believe that people think apple makes better computers than others. The interface...is easy to love, the software is ok but less of it, and their hardware is just a flawed as any other similarly spec'ed out machine. The problem is ...apple has this "high-quality" tax and it just ain't so. As for the imac 5k....I hate the idea of integrated machines. Monitors are meant to be tethered and interchangeable. It has a few good reviews however.
