GH2 5DtoRGb Information

Excellent writeup, can't wait for the next post. Are you going to go into some of the steps that you take during color correction/output as well?

Just wanted to say thanks Kholi. I just purchased a GH2 yesterday and I've really been enjoying your write ups and videos.
I'm a sound mixer by trade (and aspiring director) and everything you are posting is definitely giving me a great start as I dive into this camera
and for that I thank you.

Second actual shoot with GH2 + Hack, first time using EF lenses on the camera. ACtually liking the combo, and I'm trying out 5DtoRGB batch. Found something interesting, but not sure if it's going to be of use. Luminance Range setting in 5DtoRGB, apply "Full Range" + 1.8 gamma = SUPER FLAT IMAGE. Scary flat, actually. To the point where I think it's bad flat? But, I tested it out with lowly 422HQ to see what would happen...

All three are same settings
GH2 1080/60i 24mb/s (Sage's X3 hack doesn't have high bit rate 1080/60i, need to find one)
EF 85/1.4 @ 1.4 + ND .3
ISO 200
Smooth +2 -2 -1 -2
Non ETC mode (Such a fan, but not for this)
1/60 shutter
Vignette Added in post (A little too heavY)
1 Light Grade with Colorista II -- Same grade on all images, no adjustments.

NOTE: Because FCP is kinda silly, these are screencaps that represent what I'm actually getting in FCP, versus what FCP decides to spit out. You can click each one, but they are not 1920x1080.

5DtoRGB + 1.8 Gamma + Broadcast Range

5DtoRGB + 1.8 Gamma + Full Range on Luminance

5DtoRGB + 1.8 Gamma + Full Range on Luminance + Denoiser (lightly Applied)

Even though I was afraid, I could imagine trying this out with DPX sequences (highest quality yer gonna get) and in DaVinci to see what I get.

Thoughts?

I think the last one looks the most filmic of all. And the first actually really looks broadcasty to my eyes. So scary yes, but worth it, maybe?

I see you shot on smooth...didn´t I read somewhere here that you were going back to standard? Damn, there´s so much to read all the time, I can´t keep up!

And, any news on 5DtoRGB concerning gamma 1.8 in the latest version? Windows?

Keep it up...please :Drogar-KnockedOut(D

I agree. The first one definitely clips a bit and I could tweak it, but I like how easy it was to get to the last one. And I did a small tweak to the curve to get the contrast down a bit more and there was still something more pleasant.

Actually thought this was a good situation for smooth, given the lighting setup, highlights etc. So I stuck with it. Me thinks I'll try some cinema lowlight soon and standard as well.

Also, the 1.8 option is coming back to batch soon. Alls well!

Is the 1.8 option available on the current, non-batch option? I remember loving this option with the GH1 and hack but couldn't see to get the same results with the GH2.

Has somebody done a 'white paper'/cheet sheet-type of thing on this workflow?

I've been using Cineform Neoscene for ever with AVCHD. Anyone done a compare between Neoscene and 5DtoRGB? Does 5DtoRGB really pull out that much more info in the darks during the transcode? Thanks!

Only thing I've got is on the campcomet.com website. I'll try to build on it as I get into the batch version. The 1.8 option is not available on the current batch program but you can find an older version of the free 5DtoRGB. The new batch will have gamma options for sure.

Try the free version to see what you get. I'd love to know how the two compare.

I've used 5DtoRGB now to convert 1080/60i to 29.97, dropped right into FCP and worked perfect, if that helps at all.

May need to find an older version online and/or wait until the new one comes out.

See if you can find a download for 1.5.3b or 4.

Pretty soon here, from what I was told. I believe Thomas is working out some very very minor fixes. It's working well.

I have not been able to get my scratch audio to come out the other side and stay in sync. Anyone else have this issue?

I'm using version 1.5.3b
Is there something I'm doing wrong or is it impossible with this version?
Are the paid versions working or is it the same issue with them?

I haven't noticed an issue with audio sync at all using 5DtoRGB (batch) at least. I'll have to check, but generally it's spot on.

It seemed spot on with an interview, used the Rode Vid mic Pro for scratch and never had a sync issue with that or second sound.

Not that I noticed, again.

ok, must be the old version thats doing it

While I've got you I had another question. I noticed the file that 5DtoRGB spits out is 29.97, I double checked by running the same file through the old school way (FCP log and transfer then JES deinterlacer) and it aslo came out as 29.97.

I stepped through both output files looking for 2/3 pulldown and didn't see any.

This is weird for me as the camera is in Manual Movie Mode and Rec Mode is AVCHD (1080i). Back with the gh1 this meant that I was recording 24p embedded in a 1080i stream. This does not seem to be the case with the gh2.

Is it impossible to get 24p from MMM Rec Mode AVCHD (1080i) ?

I don't think so.

Cinema mode is 24P. Manual Movie is 1080/29.97 (in a 60i), 720/60, and I think 640x486

Cinema is 24P

Then variable is 24P slow mo (I think. I've actually never used it)

I was using the 24p cinema mode but with my hack I don't have playback. Thats why I started experimenting with AVCHD(1080i)

Does the hack you have allow playback? If so which hack?

edit: I re-tested 5DtoRGB ver 1.5.3b with 24 cinema ans sync is now perfect, it was the Rec Mode AVCHD that threw it out
