Kepler goes up in search of "new Earths"

95 Megapixel camera. Eat that 5D Mark II! :)

But does it have interchangeable lenses, 35mm DoF, and 24p captured in a good solid codec to affordable media? At least it's CCD instead of CMOS so there will be no jello. :violin:

I thought that this already launched? Where is my brain?

Cool though. I can't imagine what it will feel like if they actually find an Earth-like world. Whether this mission or a future one down the line finds an Earth 2 or something similar, I hope to still be around when the news is announced.

they will easily find rocky inner planets with this telescope. We just don't currently have the technology to detect them in the glare of a star. We can only detect much larger planets.

But we will find many, many rocky inner planets. Whether turn out to be "earth 2" or not, is another story. Most likely we will end up finding thousands of planets capable of sustaining life, and they will likely all have at east single-cell life, as the Earth did for about 3 billion years. But we would have no way of knowing this from a distance.

If we detected the presence of electromagnetic radiation, it would be a sign that the planet hosted a civilization advanced enough to have electric lights, radio, etc. But then again, any such planet might be so far away that it's civilization might have died by the time its light got to us.

I think the most likely scenario is that we discover the planet of our predecessors, a civilization that has already fallen; but the energy readings are only now reaching us. They, of course, developed much faster than light travel, and when their civilization was ending they found the most suitable planet to create their replacements- Earth. So we'll be looking into our own history in a way once we discover this. Also, we find out that they were destroyed partly by evil aliens that were then hunting for their descendants and our now coming for us. It just makes logical sense.

You should turn this scenario into a script.

Actually... It kinda bares a resemblance to the Halo series.

It also reminds me a little bit of the current season of Battlestar Galactica ("No Exit", the episode with all the exposition).

Ah, what the hell, a lot of science fiction is incestuous in terms of story ideas and basic premises.

I bet you we'll be able to tell if there's intelligent life out there when we spot a planet and see the little green aliens mooning us. Bwahaha, get it? Mooning, like a moon... cause it's a spacial mass.. and their behinds...

...hehehehe...

*cough*

... yeah, I'll shut up.

I once had the misfortune of trying to read a thread somewhere else where someone was making the point that George Lucas ripped off Dune. It was entertaining for the first 50 posts

With fiction, there are no new ideas... just new ways of telling old ones.

I doubt there's any intelligent life out there .
Aliens I believe will be very dumb to our dissapointment.
Actually why do people always say Intelligent life. why cant they say peacefull, or green energy oriented aliens who want to a drive a Prius.
