7D 5d vs 7d Action Sports Videographer

Background. I shoot action sports. High speed, Lots of movement blah blah. Just sold my hvx200 today.

Ive been researching this day for a long time. Im really in between the 5d and 7d.

I really want the low light capabilities the 5d has. After being so crippled with low light for so long with the hvx200.

I used to shoot 30p with the hvx200 so ill be right at home.

I dont do alot of slow mo.

Really like the full-frame 5d.

The 7d 60p is a nice option... The cropped frame is sweet for extra telephoto.

Basically I need someone to convince me I can shoot high speed action fine with a 5d. I know its not going to be amazing but I just need to be able to do it.

I would say the 7D. The 5D is 20 months old, which means a 5D mark iii could happen before the end of 2010. Spend the extra $1000 on some glass, that will work with any canon body in the future.

Oh it's without question the 5D is better- bigger chip = more depth of field control and better low light capability. I don't see where having a newer model on the way diminishes that in any way.

but because of the shallower depth of field on the 5D, wouldn't that make it even more difficult to get the right thing in focus at the right time as it rapidly moves like in sports?

alright, but another benefit the 7D has over the 5D for your situation is the fact that most sports videography is done from a distance, so the crop factor (1.6x) could actually work for your situations, if you don't already have a collection of nice telephotoglass

i shoot action sports and have the 7d, love it. i shoot all the action stuff in 60p so that i can either put in a 30p timeline and it plays at real spead or be able to conform it to slow mo, any interview'sh stuff in 30p.

If you shoot spots/action it makes no sense to go with the 5D, none at all. The 7d was made for it and the asp-c chip will not only give you shallow dof if you need it, but will also make your lenses longer and help keep things in focus. The 7d performs very well in lowlight, in the same ball park as my 5d. Plus on the photo side 8fps burst is for sports/action guys.
7d was made for action. it's a no brainer.

Dont wanna be that guy.. bu you do know about the jello effect / artifacts with the DSLR sensors? If you had the HVX.. I would never sell for the DSLR thats on the market today.. get one as a complement for shooting where the HVX just wont do it for you in low light.. or get a EX1.. they have a sick low light capability and a nice DOF.

I´ve been shooting action sport for the majority of my life and shoots with the EX1 (a-cam) and a T2i (b-cam/crash cam) but I see a huge diffrence between the system how they react to fast moving subjects

Why you sold the HVX in the first place to go with a DSLR if you are doing sports is beyond me. But yes, the 7D seems to be the better choice here. The better choice as in you can go home with the ugly girl at the party, or the runner up for ugly girl at the party.

I think the OP said he was sick of the low light performance.

hvx200 is noisy and poor low light, the 7d looks better from every video i have seen...and in the price range of the hvx200 might as well get a sony ex1r....

I loved my hvx it had over 780 hours on it and i bought it with only 50 not even a year ago. Made alot of money with it and learned alot. But recently I have been shooting alot of weddings and I am so so gimped with the hvx in low light. And also just got so tired of having no DOF.

I also wanna start shooting still images. So the dslr was always on my mind. The option to use it to video is also anouther great thing.

I bought the 5d... If its really bad Ill just buy a 7d body or even a hv40 or something for action stuff. But the 5d is going to be the money maker in low light

Well the 5dmkii makes sense for weddings... you should've mentioned that in the first place! But for sports the 7d definitely has the advantage - 60p for video and 8fps stills. I know plently of peolpe who are moving from Pro HDV cameras to the 7d to shoot surfing.

If you're planning on doing a lot of weddings, then I think the perfect combo would have been an EX1 and a 7D or T2i.

At least in my experience the 12 minute time constraint would be a deal breaker for event shoots.
