5D MKIII specs

If you're looking for a MKIII, check with Texas Media Systems. I think they've got some kits and bodies in stock. And if you ask nicely, they might throw in a free battery. :D

I sent an email to Technicolor asking if there were any known issues with cinestyle on the MKIII and got this reply-

Hi Squig,

We have not yet seen the Canon 5DMarkIII here to test out CineStyle. We believe it will work as any other previous Canon EOS configured with the Canon Picture Style feature. You can visit our WEB site in the next few weeks to see any announcements we may make on this subject.

Thanks for your continued support of Technicolor’s CineStyle.

Was just trying to order mine but the transaction failed :badputer: my credit union account does this weird thing where it shows I have less funds available than I really have after after each transaction...there's a lag of a few days...I just had to pay for pre-school....grrr...now I have to wait another day to pay and up to a week for it to arrive....I'm shooting in a week! :nads:

I'm looking to see how Marvels 3.4 works out on here as well. Not a big fan w/ how Cinestyle eliminates the blacks in favor of a boost for dynamic range. Marvels 3.4 (contrast lowered completely) appears to pull the same DR, w/o sacrificing the black levels and ultimately giving a much sharper, more refined image in comparison.

Yeah, I saw that.

I just don't want it to get into a "my camera is better than your camera" exchange.

:)

It's more likely to be "my sharpening is better than your sharpening" at this point, which is a good thing. Perhaps it would be a good idea to move the thread into the Canon FF section now....if it's not too much hassle.

LOL Indeed ;-) And IMO that has a name behind: John Schultz aka jcs. No idea if Philip (Bloom) got the idea from his posts, but I wouldn't be surprised. His review stands his credits as DSLR guru anyway. 5-star as usual. The guy keeps going as an inpiration :-)

RE: CineStyle: I'm very surprised to see that I work faster than Technicolor... not only is Flaat v.2.0 out since monday, but I also tested CineStyle, and can say that it does look very close to what it did on the old cameras (an in particular: exactly the same dynamic range and light response); no wonder Flaat is so much better  (Flaat_10n has similar colors, same DR, less noise in final images; Flaat_10p has much better skin tones -at price of color shifts, eg. blue goes towards cyan- same DR, less noise in final images; Flaat_11 and Flaat_12 have higher DR -at least one stop- but more noise in the previously-clipped shadows)

only in video mode: 11.5 stops, maybe a bit less (basically, the same as with the old cameras) - it looks like could be extended with Magic Lantern (I've been talking to A1ex about this recently, I'll try some things on my T2i this weekend) - if anybody has a 5D3 and wants to know how much DR it has in RAW stills mode, send me a PM and I'll send you some simple instructions - I have the D800 files waiting for me at home, I expect to post its DR rating in video mode today, in the Nikon subforum

there's a hard clip at 11.5 stops, you definitely can't go beyond that with picture styles - Magic Lantern can control that hard clip in the old cameras (but it's mostly irrelevant because it falls very close to the sensor's limit anyway) - the other solution would be for Canon to give someone (read: Technicolor) the inside information to play with that hard limit - now, on the useable or not debate... I find that highly subjective, but the reduced noise of the 5D3 may help push up what most people think is useable; on the old cameras, most people are not confortable shooting with 11 stops of DR and above (CineStyle delivers 10 stops of DR, the same as Flaat_2/Flaat_10, which is the option most Flaat users are going for); on the 5D3, maybe they'd happily shoot with Flaat_11 or Flaat_12 - I don't have a 5D3 to shoot video tests, so if any 5D3 owner wants to test this, it would be more than welcome

So let me get this straight, taking Epic footage and having to debayer it in post is somehow okay, but applying sharpening to all your footage in post is not? Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I *want* another step in the process, but at this point, both the Epic/Scarlet and the 5Dm3 requiring post processing mean at that aspect, they are on par in terms of extra steps.
