5D MKIII specs

The only reason I'm not saying anything is because I'm busy rearming with photon torpedoes....the real battle is yet to come. Just you wait GH2 klingons!

"I'll be back" ....doh wrong movie

Yeah i hate those guys...unless there packing a GH3 then im with them lol........I have never had this much money and uncertainty buying a bloody camera....Help me NAB your my only hope.....

What the heck is this? Is this supposed to make things better? A heavily blurry Bugatti Veyron? Oh, that's right, I have to back up from my computer screen by 7ft, correct?
This looks I'm wearing Vaseline laced goggles, man. Sharpening in post is supposed to help as an option, not become a REQUIREMENT. What you guys are doing is seriously going berserk with justification of an inferior product, and I'm not sure why, honestly. Maybe it's brand fandom, maybe it's an inability to admit you were wrong.... as these are the only real reasons I could muster up.

LOL, perhaps try watching in 1080p? Do you have a link to a sharper GH2 video on youtube? Not sure where the idea that a defense is in play, I'm posting solutions to help folks get the most out of their hardware. I have Canon lenses, dig the look of full frame, as well as the low light performance. This camera can provide an alias- and moire-free video for very difficult material. The GH2 has aliasing, is a crop sensor, and cannot come close to low light performance. I did extensive analysis of the GH2 and 5D3 and found that the alias-free 5D3 frames could be sharpened with a convolution filter, removing some of the anti-aliasing, and can match the GH2 (along with a slightly aliased image). Andrew at EOSHD replicated these results. The GH2 does not have a resolution advantage, but it does have an aliasing disadvantage. The 5D3 can be made to alias and look like the GH2 by sharpening, however the GH2 cannot be fully anti-aliased to match the 5D3. Some folks like the oversharpened, aliased look and others prefer the anti-aliased filmic look: film is alias-free and grain increases the perception of sharpness. The 5D3 can provide both looks. Here's the 5D3 sharpened to match the GH2 (doesn't matter where the sharpening occurs in-camera or in post- the images look similar):

Our goal is to get the best performance out of our cameras- we're not interested in the GH2 given the differences in functionality, though it is interesting as a resolution benchmark. Speaking of resolution, I tested 5D3 and FS100 frames from P.Bloom's forum and the 5D3 matched very close to the FS100 (could easily be intercut).

You seriously HAVE to be kidding about this and I'm not even sure if it's a troll post or not.

The comparison image you have there is based off an OVER-SHARPENED 5DIII image set next to a dramatically UNDER-SHARPENED GH2 image. And, even then, it still doesn't hold up. Maybe at first glance, until you actually begin paying attention. The 5DIII image looks artificially sharpened because, well, it IS. It looks chunky and it looks blocky. While the GH2 looks like an actual resolution increase, where you can make out the details of the teddy's fur individually. There's a large difference between sharpening pixels and actual 1000-line resolution. It cannot be faked and unless you're deluding yourself, I don't even understand how this basic concept is even an argument.

The sharpening method has been used extensively on the Digic IV sensor video before as well 3-4yrs ago. It just hasn't been a requirement nearly as much as it has with this sensor thus far, which is why we're even in this discussion regarding sharpening in the first place. Now as far as low light is concerned, yes we all know the 5DIII excels at it... at the expense of a soft, muddy looking image. The GH2 doesn't excel as well as it, but it doesn't suck at it either (that's what having a good lens is for also). The most I've ever pushed was at 1600ISO personally, and that's with very dark lighting. And if we're talking about the GH2, I'm almost positive that shooting at 2000ISO with 140Mbps MJPEG leaves quite a bit of room for lifting a clean image in post.

Besides, why are you even shooting at 20,000ISO anyhow? Has using a supplementary light become a foreign concept suddenly? Are you guys having trouble with placing even a simple practical in frame? Even if shooting on the street, you can stand next to a store window as a key. Why are you shooting in the darkest of dark conditions? For the record with the cynical laugh of yours: I own TWO 1080p monitors (one as my desktop and one 40" one) and all of our films are worked on them both. Not all of us want to be deluded into believing a $3500 camera is doing what it really is NOT doing.

But, if you're satisfied, then so be it. Just don't try to BS people who don't know any better just because you want to BS yourself, huh.

Lastly, for the record for a $700 camera, the resolution isn't even comparable for a 5DIII

Hiya, sure. The first vid I found on GH2 for 1080p on YouTube was this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6iW99rezC8&hd=1

Even so with the aliasing on the GH2, and high frequencies it still looks finely detailed. Would you be so kind as to upload more 5D3 footage with the convolution and sharpen filters? I'm faily open to seeing the anti-aliased image in its best light, but it's still very soft and chunky to my eyes (even the bear image example)

I just got off a shoot with a RED Epic and I can tell you that the raw image looks just as soft. It almost always requires sharpening. And I use some of the sharpest Zeiss glass out there. Even though it has a higher resolution. The point is that it has a ton of information to do whatever needs to be done.

You have missed the point. JCS has clearly demonstrated that the quality of the information coming off the new Mark III in terms of high frequency detail is better than it's predeccesor. More can be done with the image.

One thing I would like to point out to all the GH2 fanboys (I have two by the way) is that a good deal of what you attribute to resolution is in fact aliased detail as well.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to call BS on this statement. Particularly because I WORK with Red Epic footage on a daily basis at 4k resolution. Recode RAW on Premiere CS5.5, to be exact. It doesn't look anywhere near as soft as the MKIII does. Not even remotely close on any particular level.
There are also sample images from Red's own forum if you want to try them out. Images from a BMW shoot, low light shoot in a boiler room, skin tones, etc. It's not even close to being on the same level as the MKIII.

It's insane that you guys are even TRYING to compare the two. What planet is this, really?!

I return back here after a couple of weeks absent and see always the same... Sigh :-)

First off, do not compare apples to oranges. They have different size sensors. Period.

You seriously HAVE to be kidding about this and I'm not even sure if it's a troll post or not.
Secondly, jcs is one of most valuable posters on cinema5d. He is truly welcome over these boards.

Rather than acting as fanboys as usual, all of us should be grateful for his presence among us.

BTW, GH2 is also full of aliasing not as much but ala 5DII, so...

I just can't stop laughing and crying at the same time in this topic... Is something wrong with me?

Mk. III is what Mk. II should have been years ago (video). Just that. People got used to all the crap and found some workarounds and now they suddenly feel like Mk. III is that big of an improvement.

Calm down Kahl man, you sound like you're gonna smash someone over the head with a bottle!

LMFAO

I suggest we defer to a few pro peepers (post house guys) and see what they think of the MKIII files compared to the usual suspects. I know one dude over at cine5D who really knows his shi.

With this much customer feed back why is it no camera company in this day and age is delivering and cleaning up ? i understand everyones frustation we seem to all squabble for the tid bits on the ground....at the core for me 2 things..... 1: wish i had more money 2: wish i hadn't seen what RED / SONY / ARRI are doing......i hate those guys : )

With all due respect, BS is BS, regardless if the person has been here for a day, or for 10yrs. I don't know the person in person, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to detect when BS is in the room.
And to clarify, this isn't a fanboy post either and wasn't meant to be. It's just simply a case of logic. High quality vs low quality instead being passed off as something it isn't. This is coming from someone who owns and regularly shoots with a 5DII, 60D and 550D.
Very well, I am between 5DII, GH series and RED :-) The point is all of them are different cameras. You can even mimic some qualities with the small little 'brothers'. The opposite is harder to get : D However, apart aliasing/moiré side, 5DII sensor factor does offer quite probably the widest range of shooting setups a shooter can dream, price wise included. I'd rather expect to see popping up the quality of jcs' posts over dvxuser where a lot of us need his wise contribution and fair overview on the facts.

I was saying to jcs that perhaps Canon aren't lineskipping with the MKIII. You see the 22.3MP sensor image resizes to a perfect 3x cropped downscale to 1080p. I downscaled a raw still and HQ jpeg compressed it and it worked out to be about 500k. 24 frames works out to be roughly 90Mbit/s, the ALL-I VBR peak rate. Now when you jpeg a RAW still and downscale it to 1080p it's generally a bit soft and needs a bit of sharpening. Now jcs reckons the detail is there in the video files. The digic 5 is 17 times faster than digic 4 so my theory that it's downscaling 24 frames per second is plausible.

Be welcome, mate! It was nice to read you over here this time, hopefully much often from today on :-)

When working with Stills in Photoshop, generally use "Bicubic Sharper mode" for downsampling. Videos the same, or upscaling encode use lanczos3.

Usually looks brilliantly sharp - but both interpolation methods are using all the detail there to properly do stuff, but I'm guessing alot of the detail here is still being chucked away and the debayer is still abit odd. Hence the halos and chunky edges when sharpened. I can't say for sure until I see more footage though with that 5D3 anti-aliased footage properly sharpened!

You know it's an offence in Australia to chuck beer.
That is just silly...

Here in Slovenia you face public execution (they kill you to death) if you get caught shooting with plastic GH2 instead of professional Canon DSLR...

Underground market for rehousing little Panasonics in professional Canon bodies is thriving here. And what is worse - the money from all this ends up in places we call "banka" which is then used by our government (which also doubles as arms-dealing mafia) to fund amerojewish terrorism around the world!

And if you get caught with rehoused GH2 the punishement is even worse! They make you drive French cars for the rest of your life! I know, cruel little country I live in... This is why I'm saving my hard-earned money so I can flee to a better place (I heard great things about a country called North Korea so I guess I'll escape there someday).

LOL I am in Crna Gora these days, so... ;-) Even though, you'll never find the same 60s/70s nostalgia out there ;))
