5D MKIII specs

For me, the main advantages of the 5DM3 as a "HD" video camera are:
- The 5DM3 is smaller, lighter & less expensive than a FS100 and numerous other cams (although, unsurprisingly, the 5DM3's video quality isn't as good as the FS100, etc. There's no free lunch).
- The 5DM3 is FF (I often need shallow DOF in smallish rooms).
- The 5DM3 has a headphone jack & adjustable audio levels while recording (I think the D800 is the only other DSLR that does?).
- The 5DM3 appears to have less gradient banding artifacts than the GH2 (jury might still be out on this one; and perhaps there's a particular hack setting for the GH2 I need to test?).
- The 5DM3 is weather sealed (it rains a lot in Portland, OR; today it snowed!).
- The 5DM3 has timecode, kinda like a real video cam.
- In addition to using the 5DM3 with my vintage Nikon 35mm SLR lenses, there's an insanely wide range of EOS lenses available.
- The 5DM3 is one of the best still cams made. Handy!

For projects & clients requiring higher video quality, there are excellent rental options available in my city (FS100, C300, RED, etc.).

I'm sure there are other reasons for me to continue following 5DM3 news, but the above are some of the main things about it that interest me. I can justify owning a cam in the 5DM3's price range; anything more expensive is a rental item.

Cheers.

Hmm... on that note:smiley_up:smiley_up All I really *needed* out of the cam to upgrade from my 5DII (for video purposes - I also shoot a lot of photos but that's another post)was 2 things. There were some wants in there also, but the main factors for me to upgrade were:

1. Moiré fixed or diminished considerably.

2. Rolling Shutter fixed to the point where I could go handheld with no accessories and not have to worry about jello ruining my shot.

3. At least the same quality video as my 5DII

That's all it would have taken for me to upgrade instantly.

That being said, #1 on my list is the only one I think I can confirm as of now. From the videos I've seen SO FAR, #2 and #3 have yet to be seen. Jello is still apparent, but I can't tell if it's to the point of ruining a shot yet (in my eyes). And the video quality of the vids I'm seeing doesn't look like an improvement from the 5DII. The detail (or lack there of) is really an issue that I need to get resolved one way or another before pulling the trigger on this one.

I suspect that NR is active out of the box which is probably causing the plasticy look. My kids are home sick so I can't make it to the demo day today :violin:
I'm still keen on getting one next week but the news of weird shadow noise at low ISOs is disturbing. But if it's not there at high ISO's there's always NDs.

Right now for the best quality for the 5D3: use IPB mode (I-frame has issues- see thread link), no in-camera sharpening, and sharpen in post using a convolution filter (could also try Unsharp Masking at low levels).

The in camera sharpening is creating a halo effect and I-frame is blocky noisy in the shadows.

Ran the 5D Mark III through a test of a scenario I would use it in (controlled lighting setting)

Used IPB, nr turned off, neutral 1 on sharpening, -4 contrast, -2 sat

Not as resolute as my gh2 but I'm enjoying it so far.

Download the 1080p version of @dtjohns1 's video. Really quite nice. No, for sure this camera is soft... we can agree on that. But guess what, most people will not care about that. They care about the vibe, the feel. And this vid has a good feel, good skin tones.

Would love to see a few more!

What lenses were you using?

canon 28 1.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8 all at 2.5 iso 160

Thanks, it's the first sample I've seen that is really useful in a narrative context. Could you do us all a great favour and upload a couple of the IPB shots? Just looking at the outline of his t-shirt I can't tell if it's the post compression, sharpening halo effect, or CA from the glass.

EOSHD is saying terrible fizz and mosquitos with the new ALL-I codec on 5D MIII. Review here:

Hmmm, could be trouble.

Yeah VBR sux arse. The 1st magic lantern bit-rate hack was VBR and really sucked. I did some early tests and gave feedback to the boys and they worked on the CBR hack which is way better. We need magic lantern for MKIII! The IPB doesn't look bad but I'd much prefer a high bit-rate intra codec. Canon need a smack in the head.

Has anyone else actually suggested this or is this all coming from that one site/test? I haven't seen this in my limited use of the camera so far, but will be looking out for it as I start to get to grips with it. But I haven't seen any other examples of this or heard any other reports. Just people quoting that one test. If anyone has links to others, it would be great to see them to help establish if there is indeed a problem.

On another note, speaking as a former HVX200 owner, it's like deja vu. Remember all the 'it's soft on wide angle shots' discussion then?! :)

Dan Chung concurs and it makes sense because intra-frame is a lot less efficient than inter and VBR is crap especially on large areas of a single colour/tone particularly pinks and reds. Canon screwed up big time because Pentax have been doing 75Mbit/s m-jpeg on their DSLRs and it looks great! They just omitted manual control :nads:

IPB could be quite reasonable if the B stands for b-frames.....it's no avc intra however....please somebody hack this thing and make it work!

Did Dan concur? I haven't read that anywhere. I know he is having problems with gamma in FCP7, but I haven't seen anything that concurs with what is being described as a problem with the ALL-I codec in the above test.

I think Canon has somewhat crippled the 5DMK3 to make way for the 4K DSLR. Given that 80% of all Canon DSLR purchases last year were for video-use (I'd link the article, but have lost the link), the "EOS-C" line is probably top-priority for Canon, and an EOS-C DSLR even more so.
