5D MKIII specs

Well so far, the mark III is looking very impressive. Tackling the moire issue and increasing the dr was really what I wanted out of an upgrade. I am extremely satisfied with my gh2, but if the dr on this is anywhere near the c300, I'll be very tempted to say the least. I was slightly hoping to see a difference in motion characteristics / cadence, but in that respect, it looks exactly like the 5D II.

If I could only time travel and take a peek a year from now and see the advances in picture styles etc; find out what this camera is really capable of. Either way, this is all very exciting.

I'm far into the camp that doesn't care about high ISO night shooting.

Just stop making it hard to shoot near, in, or around daylight. Getting really annoying.

No need for this tone. He wasn't directing anything toward anyone, just stating his opinion like everyone else in this thread.

"It's laughable" could be easily construed as being directed at anyone and everyone who considers buying this camera. Sure, it was caveated with the whole "my needs" and "I wouldn't pay" but it's a similar tone, IMO.

Agreed. Has it been confirmed that the 5DM3's ISO 50 mode is a stills-only feature, or can it be used to shoot video, too? (With the usual DR hit, of course.)

maarek, that is tough!

Kholi is one, if not the most accurate testers I ever read. Completely brand agnostic. Something hard to tell within industry, even with the quality of some 'official' testers like Barry or Philip. We have an advantage with Kholi, he is fully indie. Even though, I doubt this time he is right on the post-processing comment regarding that sharpness we see in these samples.

Anyhow, here is something we should be aware of:

ISO12800 apparently looks almost as much clean as ISO50. This is news! And even the ISO25600 is not bad at all! ;)

Not sure if others have mentioned it (been off and on this very long thread) but I'm imagining the 5d3 codec is going to stomp on the C300 codec. the I Frame thing is a killer app for me. Do you think they'll have to add I frames to the C300 now to keep it looking like the video leader?

Oh my! Those images from dpreview with high iso are AMAZING! 25600 is completely usable. But the 12500 is cleaner than the 5Dmk2's 800. Wow, one could just use a 3 or 4 stop high quality ND outside and use ISO as your variable ND.

The C300 codec may be 50mbs/sec, but it's also 422, and the quality of the image in the C300 is no doubt a better source to be compressing from the start. The i-frame is going to be very nice I'm sure, but how nice has yet to be seen.

I'm gonna say no. 4.2.0 vrs the 4.2.2 XF format. You can give the 5dmk3 120mbps and I'll take the XF 422 50 mbit anyday. It's just a matter of color and gradations. I have the XF105 and the codec is great. Give me the C300 and I'm in heaven.

Is it 4.2.0? We don't know that yet, right? I mean Canon don't want to shoot themselves in the foot, but it's clear they 'could' make this 4.2.2.

A lot of people are having a whinge about no clean HDMI out. Prores 422 compresses 24p 1080p at an average of 117Mbit/s (typically 5-10% less) We know from Canon's spec sheet that ALL-I is 91Mbit/s. Both codecs are I-frame and compress each frame individually. We're not sure if ALL-I is 4:2:2 yet. So when you look at the specs ALL-I could be close to Prores in lossyness which would be f...ing awesome! And if it is who needs the hassles of an external recorder?

So far I'm really impressed with the low light ability. I really wasn't expecting such a huge improvement. It looks like at least a 2 stop improvement as has been stated by Chuck Westerfall. That's D3s D4 FS100 F3 C300 territory! Canon appear to have dealt with the chroma noise issues and noise reduction is applied in video mode. The stills examples look fantastic, no chroma noise and nice fine grain even at 12800 ISO!

Aliasing/moire, rolling shutter, noise, and lineskipping softness do look so far to be under control.

I paid $3800 AUD for the MKII 3 years ago. I can get one of these from the US for $3650 AUD landed.

So what the hell is not to like? Except for no 1080p 60p it sounds like almost exactly what I need.

Can we try to keep this thread productive please. If you want to complain start your own thread.
