5D Mark III or 7D Mark II?

This thread is completely bonkers. But why spoil the fun, I'll continue.

Is that why all of your videos are badly lit? The cameras aren't doing it for you? Peace.

While GH2/3 owners are making boring videos, Canon users are actually making interesting films and making millions of views on youtube. And not just lame ass music videos but actual content too. Something that GH2 users are not familiar with.

HVX200? That had about 720p resolution, if that. The canon 5dmarkIII gets more. Plus looks sexier. And is for smarter people.

Yes, it is about the camera. If it wouldn't be then GH2 users would have films that someone had actually seen right? Yes, I am being a bit nillywilly but hey. There's some truth here.

I just seen this post now, let me see some of your work.

EDIT
A quick search brought up a project you did which displayed amazing lighting and photography skills, my apologies, thank you for showing us your excellent skills as a director of photography and the millions of youtube views and dollars you are making....... Such amazing color and lighting, truly inspirational...........

Oh come on...now you're just behaving like kids... lol :) (have to admit, I chuckled)
I shall join in...He started it!!! *cries running to mummy*

*on a related note, WHY does this happen everytime the gh2 is brought up in a canon discussion... To all gh2 users, cut us some slack, don't insult the canons whenever you have the opportunity to (gh2 users seem very aggressive when it comes to protecting their beloved :) )...pretty please?

The GH2 cameras suffer far less from image issues that the Canons possess. Simply pointing this out is not an "insult".

WHY does this happen everytime the gh2 is brought up in a canon discussion...

...Because so many of us GH2 / GH3 users used to own Canon cameras ( I owned a Canon 20D ---> Canon 40D ---> Canon 60D ), and then we switched over to the Panasonic GH2 / GH3 cameras.

One month after owning the GH2, I knew that I was never going to shoot video with my Canon 60D ever again, so I immediately sold all my Canon gear.

That's all good n stuff...but there are rather rude things said on both sides of the fence...I'm ON the fence- (I've seen great pieces with both systems) If someone chooses to shoot Canon and ask questions in a Canon thread...many times it turns to "get a GH2/3 or you're stupid kind of thing". For one thing, when the GH cameras are released they are a total ***** to find...that's a valid answer right there. I waited a year before a GH1 was on the shelf where I live...that's ridiculous. I bought it...loved it. I love em, but I'm not about to bash someone who shoots Canon...or say the cameras are crap ...because they aren't. The same thing happens the other way... some Canon users saying the GH2/3 cams are crap because they chose the competition.

The same thing happens the other way...

Going from the GH2 to Canon DSLRs is a pretty rare event. ( much more common the other way around )

If I could afford to I would buy a Canon C100 and a few good Canon L lenses, as I know this would be a significant upgrade from my GH2/3 cameras for video work.

And beyond this, I would trade the Canon C100 for a Sony F5 if money was no object, as again I know that the F5 would be a significant upgrade from the Canon C100.

New Music Video shot on Hacked GH2's which I edited.

Looks really great J.F.R...! Although Im not a big fun of that music I enjoyed watching it...
Do you really think it wouldnt look that good if it had been shot on a canon?
I hope you get my point...

I'm just incredibly sick of canon discussions turning into gh2 wars. The gh2 wasn't even mentioned in this thread by OP and I see no reason for this pointless 9 page long debate.

I agree Donald, it's what makes me use other boards more than his one...It gets boring real fast, to see folks jump in like this, as if theyhave nothing better to do but wander into 'competing' (in their own minds) forums to sling crap. Makes me want to trot out the ols saying, "shut up and shoot." i'm out of here...by yawl...

That's not what I meant by the same thing happening the other way - I was saying people knock camera choice taking into account their own needs...not the other guys. A t3i is $599, can be bought and tried out anywhere, has cheap lenses available without adapters, has a highly usable 3x zoom mode for VERY minimalized aliasing, has a great LCD, takes great photos, has audio level controls....and it CAN make some beautiful video in the right hands. Fine, it's not good for you...so what? It works for a lot of people who can't even get their hands on a GH to try one out. There isn't a GH camera in my entire state to test out...They aren't at Target, Best Buy, Wal Mart, the Local guys, Sears, Kmart, etc etc. And now the GH3...it's a 2 month wait to even get one online.
I agree they are the most mature stills camera with video on the market, have great sharpness etc....but there's more to the picture when considering availability, lens adapters, price...and so on. Not to mention the GH2 has quirks all it's own. I would prefer it personally as well, but some just flat out don't. Simple.

Here is a disorganized few responses that I have from reading this topic so far:

There is no dispute. The Gh2 does resolve more detail than 7D/60D/T3i line. Does it make it a better perfect camera? No.

This whole war of "people who make real movies use canon" reminds me of mac users claiming something similar vs. their pc counter parts. It's foolish.

To the OP: if you are invested in the EF mount then I say go with the 5Dmark iii. From what I've seen it looks stellar.

The camera I've invested in is the Gh2, and I love it. This is my opinion and I'm entitled to it. As is everyone.

Honestly it would have looked good imo on Most cameras. The only real problem I have had with Canons are on wide shots and some other kind of shots , the aliasing. Actually all I said in my first post was the Canon's have been surpassed. It's just my personal opinion because I work with footage everyday.

For example I just seen a project that was shot on a Canon 6d and the moire and aliasing is very bad. Low light though and lack of noise is a lot better than anything GH series cameras can do though.

I just started messing with 5d Mark III footage (a video) and I can say I think it's the best out of the current Canon dslr's. Of course the Cinema line is another story, but yeah I don;t even know why this thread turned ugly.

All I'm saying is we use every camera and currently like the GH2 Hacked as we feel it causes less problems in the Moire and Aliasing department when shooting Dslr's. I love working with Red Epic footage, but sometimes when the budget is tight you rather put it into the production instead of the actual camera. This is where GH2's have shine. Their low cost allows us to shoot freely without worrying about expensive insurance and data management. Heck it's easy to have 3 GH2's on set for a low cost compared to many cameras.

At the end though my final point was any Camera can be made to look "Cinematic" and yes any most productions can be shot on anything and look great. My only knock against the Canon is the lack of detail in wides, I worked around the aliasing and moire but it was to hard to do it in wide shots.
I love doing this and at the end of the day content is king.

This thread is in the Canon section, and is asking about Canon cameras. Folks coming in here crapping in the thread talking about other cameras, and folks getting involved in camera wars or personal ****... I'm going to start giving permanent vacations.

If you do that it will be a very lonely place. :cheesy:

To the OP, rumoured specs are just that and even true specs don't read like: "zero aliasing and moire" "true no bs 1080p (no we really mean it this time)". Until forum members actually get their hands on it and the pixel peeping begins nobody knows what the 7D MKII will be like. What I can tell you is some people will whinge about it until they find something else to whinge about and others will make great movies with it regardless of its flaws.

I've shot films with the 7d and 5D MKII and the only major differences are lens selection and the 7D has a bit more highlight range. The 5D is better in low light but ends up about on par with the 7D when you stop down to get the same DOF. I prefer the full frame sensor because I can get faster wide glass and shallower DOF at the wide end. And you can't beat the full frame sensor for stills.

Back on topic, thought, I agree with.

I don't see canon killing off their flagship 5d3/1DX by making the 7d2 better, though. Unless of course they dramatically upgrade the 7d to a whole new class above the 5ds...which is as plausible as gh2 fans coexisting with us lot :) (joke...please don't start another :) )

The new Cinema DSLR will probably just be the 1080p mode from the 1d-C in a smaller package. Price will probably be about $4-5,000. Or it'll be a gutted C100 in DSLR form.

I'm guessing the 7D MK2 will be much like the original 7D was when it was announced: THE go to APS C camera for sports/wildlife/video. It will get the new codec choices and POSSIBLY the extra OLPF from the MK3. That won't hurt the MK3 or the 6D because they have full frame sensors to their advantage. After all...the original 7D had more video options than the 5D MK2 (never really hurt the 5D sales) The 5D MK3 is the start of 2nd gen Canon DSLR video. I believe the 7D MK2 will get 2nd gen video as well, which will migrate down to the T5i. The only part I'm not sure of (in my own scenario that is...lol) is whether any of the new cams will get the extra olpf for minimized aliasing/moire. I think they will ALL come with ALL I options from here on out.

The 6D didn't get the new OLPF so I doubt the 7DII will. Hey maybe Canon will come out huge but given their track record I expect a great APSC photo camera with average video functions.
