5D Mark III or 7D Mark II?

So you have used a GH3 recently? Are you so sure that you cannot shoot something that is not lit?

I think it's amazing how people defend a "brand" as if it was their first born....... Mark III is a $3000 pro camera, GH2/3 cost $500-$1300 Consumer/Prosumer cams.... As a Director of Photography there is simply no denying such an amazing tool and what it has to offer. This thread will never end, but just for comparison look how the GH3 looks compared to Mark III, options people I believe that's what allows one to grow.....

Like he said the aperture were the same on both camera and so with full frame camera compared to GH3, it doesn't have the same dof, one good example is the 2nd scenes, the M3 were clearly very sharp on the chain of the swing, but the background is soft because of the shallower dof, the GH3 looks sharper all the way so it seems like it is a sharper camera, but if you just comparing the chain on the swing set they look the same.

No doubt the Mark III looks great and possibly the larger sensor could be the reason for a softer background. The most important thing being imo is no one can say Canon is better than Panasonic slr and especially when you compare price/quality.

The Mark III is a different beast and no doubt will be a better performer in low light and shallow dof + photography. My point on all of this is just to take a look at the Panasonic Slr's, they are doing some great things over there. The GH2/GH3 provide an excellent image. I feel the 7d,60d,etc. line of cameras have been surpassed. The Mark III is a lot better, and the Cxxx cinema line is just insane.

Also remember the GH3 now shoots 1080 60fps which is huge for many of us. No point in me to continue to beat this topic, all I ask is just look at the amazing footage being shot with Panasonic SLR cameras. I am so impressed with the quality of wide shots, that's the main reason I sold my Canon and now use GH2/GH3.

Alright, fine, I will give you that. For the price, the GH-line is quite spectacular.
And i agree, they are different beasts for different jobs, but of course, the canon line hasn't been surpassed...at least not the 2nd gen canon(s).

One thing about the Canons vs Panasonics...

There are videos (music videos, narrative) that are getting huge, just huge amounts of viewers on the internet that have been shot on Canons. Joseph Kahn's musicvideos (some which have been shot on the 5dmarkIII) have gotten tens of millions of views.

Now on the GH2/GH3 side? Nothing. Some videos that have garnered maybe 10-50k views.

So is it really the sharpness people are looking for? Definitely not. Also the 5d's softness has been overrated. It lacks a lot of artificial sharpening but the image is damn clean. When I used the 7d I was like "Man, if they could just get rid of the moire/aliasing and I would never need another cam". And they did. I will probably not need a "better" cam for a long time.

I had the Gh2 for about 1 month and sold it, not everybody is going to like it just because it has a sharper picture, I got tired of the screen change color after I push record getting my white balance all off after I had carefully adjust it before recording, all the little quirks it has, noisy video it has at high ISO even with a good hack, turning my par focal zoom lens with IS into not par focal without IS since you have to use adapter, expensive fast and wide lens for it since it is almost 2x crop, the negative out weight the positive so that is why I sold it.

Don't confuse celebrity and brand recognition with being superior. Khan could shoot a video on an iphone and it would get tens of millions of views. Although Canon carefully pays people to use their products in the hope that consumers make the same connection. Big name plus brand name = best product out there? I'm not saying Khan is paid by Canon but a lot of people are. Scoresese is on the Canon (C500) payroll and even then chooses other cameras for the his movies.

I'm in no way saying Canon makes a bad product cause they don't. I like the 5DIII and the GH3 and use them both. The image produced by both cameras won't be the thing holding back your production.

The GH3 is leaps and bounds a better camera IMO than the GH2 (of course I would get attacked for that on personal-view.com lol).

I think I'm gonna hold off and see what the 7D2 brings. I do photography as well, so I have two things that need to be considered. If by then I feel the 5D3 will be the better option, I'll go with that. Might be more sales by then.

Canon has spoken. If you want to shoot video, use the EOS Cinema series. Outside of that, these are stills cameras.

I've heard that there are Canon DSLR shooters who use a Panny DSLR strictly for wide shots, just to leverage the sharpness of the Panny. I've never used the Panny DSLRs, but if they excel at one thing (wides), and they're relatively cheap, then why not just get one for wide shots only?

then why not just get one for wide shots only?

This seems ridiculous to me. Carry an extra body with lens adapters just for wide? Canon DSLRs still look like crap on mediums/closeups too. If you want that Canon look on the GH1/2/3, then just downscale it to 720p and upscale it again. Then use your color correction tool of choice to add some nice yellow to the skin tones.

Done.

I love how you guys keep bashing the mark3 for a tad less resolution than it's rivals when in actual fact, no one but us anal video guys care. I'm not even joking when i say those i showed mark3 footage to didn't notice the difference in sharpness to my previous (really quite sharp) 1/3'' video camera. There was once after a shoot I complained to my mate (graphic designer, not cameraman) about how one of the shots looked soft and he just thought i was being completely anal and unreasonable.

Yeah, we care about these things, but until 4k/8k becomes the norm, no one else really cares. So if our audience doesn't care, why should we? We are shooting for our clients, after all, not just feeding our own ego. I'd much rather have better build quality, better low light and a larger sensor than more resolution. Let's not forget there are still people shooting standard def/HDV and churning out ridiculously soft footage (to us, anyway) and doing perfectly well...

I think they are gorgeous, I think you have something set wrong.

Nope, I have the camera set as properly as can be. You just need to experience a better camera to realize how crappy the DSLRs actually are. And be able to overlook the shallow DOF, which I suspect is what most people see and ignore the rest.

So you are saying that you can pick out the camera if there is a inter cut between like a FS100 or larger chips camera and a Mark 3 on a mediums/closeups shots under control lightning? if so you are the master.

Didn't that exact thing happen during the Zacuto shootout? I don't think anyone failed to pick out the 7D clips.

To me it comes down to the "look". The GH3 just looks more like "video" and the 5D III looks more like film. Whatever that means. :) I just like the Canon look. Yes, the GH3 is sharper and I do like that about it.

In that environment it might be but if you have a scene that inter cut between 2 camera then it is much more difficult.

...We've heard this BS for years now with the 5D MK2 vs GH2, and now with the newer 5D MK3 vs GH3 cameras.

If you know how to properly configure your camera and are skilled at post-production you can achieve a very "filmic" look with almost any camera.

Your choice of camera is usually the least important ingredient when it comes to producing "filmic" images.

Agreed. I've seen GH2 footage posted on this very forum that looks incredibly video-like, and I had no idea how I'd go about duplicating that look on a GH2.

This Debate will never end.
I have had the Gh1 and Gh2 and the only thing I had to complain was the Lowlight. The GH1 did have other problems though. As far as Sharpness goes, The GH2 and GH3 were superb. Why did I sell my GH1 and GH2? Because Clients that I had before or were New clients were looking for a 5D Mark II. So it really also all depends on if you are planning on going the Business route or your Hobby route. I picked up a ton more jobs with my 5D Mark II way more than when I had my GH1 or GH2. I have been blessed on picking up Jobs from Academy Award winner Leon Gast, Daniel Catullo III and even being the exclusive Videographers for the Jackson Family for the last 4 years plus many many Huge companies and several Celebrities. So, depending on what you are after..Business or just for a Hobby..I would lean towards a Canon for Business and for personal use..a GH3.
