550d t2i = Buy it with Kit lens or no?

I was referring the T2i/550D bundle (18-55mm), not the GH1 kit lens.

The Canon EF-S 18-55 IS F3.5-5.6 is a fine lens for autofocus stills, but not super great for video. The focus ring is on the front lip and it breathes like crazy on the long end. It is also pretty slow. Buy the body only and put the $100 you save into a piece of decent glass in the $500+ range (F2.8 constant aperature is something to look for, tamron and tokina both make them (canon's is more like $900).

I think I might take the dive with the new t2i even after all of my arguments, main reason is because Panasonic does not sell the Body Only (gh1).

So far here's my thoughts

*Canon 550d t2i body only ($799)
*Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Autofocus Lens ($250)
*Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II ($99)
* Square Trade 3 year warranty ($54.99)

---------------------------------------------
$1202.99

As opposed to getting the Gh1 with the kit lens for $1200..... THe amazing thing about the Gh1 is that you can add any lens (via adapter) but out of pocket right now what do you guys think ?

Thanks

---------------------------------------------

Or buy the Gh1, sell the kit lens for $600 which would mean I only paid $600 for the body. Then use that same $600 and buy a

*mount ($50)
*Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Autofocus Lens ($250)
*Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II ($99)
* Square Trade 3 year warranty ($99.99)

Which would equal $498 still leaving me $200 for anything else I can think of........

Hmm seems like I might be on to something here!

I owned the Gh1 for about 2 weeks and loved the kit lens that came with the camera, no complaints what so ever. All I want to know is if the Kit Lens that comes with the t2i is comparable ( at least equal) to the one that comes with the Gh1.

Or should I buy the Body only and get a nice multi-purpose lens for indoors/outdoors.

Thank you

The 18-55mm kit lens is a great lens for a hundred bucks, but you may grow out of it is a month. If you can't afford a better lens then you can live with it for a while, if you can afford better glass, you can't go wrong with the investment. Personally I ordered the 550D with a 17-40mm f4 L. I'm planning to add a 5D when they release the next model with all the upgrades promised from the factory. The 17-40mm will be good to have the day it arrives.

The 17-40 F4L is an amazing lens and just putting it onto a rebel makes it feel like a real camera. Perfect starter lens IMHO. I would reccommend adding at least a 50mm as well as the 17-40 is not quite long enough for portraits. The EF 50 F1.8 is great if you are short on cash, but the focus ring is small. You would be better off picking up an old nikon 50mm (or similar) and adapter or the canon ef 1.4 if you want to pull focus.

Remember my budget, $1200

So in your opinion this Nikon 50mm f/1.8D is better than the canon?

thanks

hey Tears...why did you sell your gh1 in the first place after only 2 weeks? Just curious...

btw, sorry i got pissy last night haha

I am sorry but when people say their budget is X and they compromise to make that number it is often more costly in the long run. Buy the right thing the first time and pay the extra $200 off over time or whatever. Get a Best Buy card.

$800 t2i body
$700 17-40F4L
100 Canon EF 1.8

When I am talking about Nikon I mean old manual Nikon lenses that have aperture dials. They have nice long focus action and the adapters are cheap.

You really need to try some of this stuff hands on before you buy. If you held the 17-40 in your hand, you would instantly understand.

you should also consider certain "digital only" lenses made by tamron and tokina in the 18-50 range with f2.8 constant aperature.

It's not a compromise it is the truth. If I had the money I would buy a full fledge camera and not a vdslr. In this world you need to understand budget, learn it, master it, live by it.

Not everyone has the same finances. I can but the t2i with the kit lens for $900 and shoot videos and make it work. So by me buying a specific lens for $100 and another for $250 lens would have me with a better than the kit lens option.

There are several amazing lenses that easily cost in the thousands, that's not for me nor even something I think about. The panasonic Gh1 comes with an amazing kit lens that I have tested and used everywhere.

Indoors I light the scene, outdoors I light the scene, and if there is light well then I have nothing to worry about. I sold my gh1 because my car broke down and needed the money asap to fix it. I get paid every two weeks from my job and needed it fixed today. So I sold my camera in one day, got paid in one day and will have my new camera in less than 5 days as I already have the money + $$ extra money.

With that being said I only have $1200 for now, ONLY that is ALL I have so that is my budget as a single penny does not exist. So I buy the t2i with the lenses I stated or buy my Gh1 again.

It's all good man, I'm only here learning day by day and trying to make it work with what I can

From your first post to me it sounds like you should get the GH1. You seem to like it a lot and know how to work with it. I don't have a rebel yet but from everything I have read and heard it seems like the kit lens for the rebel is okay but you'll probably want another lens. If your happy with the GH1 and like the image more than the canon's just buy another GH1.

well lit, well composed, sure. you don't think the gh1 could have done any better under the same conditions...even with the kit lens?....half the time you see videos like this, you think "nice, 1.8 it is...fast enough for these shots", but i don't think these videomakers were shooting that fast...maybe f3.5-4 under proper lighting? i don't know....extreme examples.....

i'd like to see some around-the-house type stuff...bully these cams into submission. unless you're not concerned with unlit, run of the mill tests...

It looked good but parts were out of focus and also in B&W. Might want to look into your camera.

Yes, I actually like the Gh1 and kit lens. Beautiful image! I think you have me confused here skinny, this is not a comparison battle. This example was shown because the Cannon 1.8 50mm only cost $100 and is a fast lens.

I am now looking for a telephoto zoom lens in the $250-300 price range that is at LEAST descent and I could make work with the t2i.

Sorry if I gave the impression that this was my footage, it is not and is from a user named "Sébastien Lacour"

LIke I said the 18-55mm is a great lens for a hundred bucks and will get you where you need to go right now. Just get that and put the rest of your $1,200 on the side. In a few months you can still sell it on Ebay and only loose $25, but the 17-40mm L or better should be your next target. Mike Johnson first pointed it out to me and after a long research of every other lens out there I realized it is a really solid choice. You will go through 10 camera body upgrades and still have the same lenses. Good glass and good lighting for the long haul.

So up to about 24+ hours non stop researching and I came to a conclusion, if ANYONE has the Kit lens that came with the 7d let me know so I can buy it from you.

The kit Lens that comes with the 7D (28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM ) Has the image stabilization I need + silent auto focus.

Let me know anyone

peace

You can't really explore every option and try the lenses out in person in 24 hours.

28mm is not really wide enough as your wide lens. You would be better off getting the 18-55 f3.5-56 IS as part of your kit and saving up another month or two as Rockmore said.

No response needed.
