Even with sharpness setting in the centre i have found after doing a test with my HV30 identicl zoom angles in a place with plenty of detail the HV30 18x1440 seems TO edge it over my 550Ds 1920P resolution is this normal,i know most use thes for getting a film look and are not bothered by resolution but i expected my 550 to have more if anything. The test involved making a avchd disc from H.224 files and HDV tape on one time line, i have checked the 550 avchd footage and it is the same as the cam playing back files itself.

The DSLR's do not come close to resolving the full 1920x1080 pixels. Very few camcorders do, but the DSLR's are particularly soft. The over-simplified explanation is that the sensor, optics & engine are not optimised for recording HD video.

If you've used real HD cameras before then the difference is quite obvious at first glance. Most people who use the Canon DSLR's alongside HD camcorder's need to soften the camcorder footage to make them match.

DSLR video barely resolve more than true SD resolution. It's something like up to 650 lines, before you get the aliasing moire rainbow patterns.

That's why I like to add grain to my footage, so that you can just see the sharp noisy pixels which give the illusion of sharpness underneath it.

Yes as i said i have used HDV camcorders including an FX-7 which was about on par with the HV exept with more grain, but i cant agree about DSLR sharpness if there is a difference in my 550d it is only very slight compared to the HV,in fact why i was surprised at all by my test was because on some brighter days the footage from it seemed the sharpest i have taken,:undecided

I dont' really see the difference that much between my hv20 on cinemode and 7d. The 7d is maybe a touch softer.

Really, I find my t2i to be sharper than my xha1. Although that could be due to the dof adapter on the front of the cam. Never compared naked xha1 to the t2i though.

In cinemode HVs are on the soft side even with contrast sharpness + brightness right up so if your 7D looks softer than that i am surprised again,

DLSRs "appear" sharper because of all the false detail from the aliasing. If you want to see the difference, try shooting something like a newspaper, at equal framing -- you should be able to read the text more clearly on the HV20 than on the t2i.

All this is so annoying there has been no mention anywhere that DSLRS cant match HV canon resolution i spend what is a small fortune to me and it all comes out Damn

Not sure what you mean by this statement?
As someone who has shot 8 or 9 short films with the HV20 and just went on to finish a new one with the T2i, I can honestly say that I would never go back.

The HV20 was great, but overall this camera knocks it to the curb.

How do you think the EX3 stands up against higher end HD cameras with similar small sensors?

I'm shooting with an EX3 along side a 550D. The EX3 footage seems quite a bit sharper, but everyone seems to like the 550D footage better, including me. The last shoot I didn't have time to go get my EX3 rental and had to shoot the project with the 550. The client is very happy. I have another shoot with them and the EX3 never even came up.

However high rez or not, the look from these DSLRs is selling.

I really don't understand, So if the HV's image are better, Why I'm so sure that my 7D footage seems better, sharper and nicer than my HV's image.. ?? Could someone explain me again the fact that the Hv have more sharpness? should be with a side by side image comparison.

better is a subjective term. as michael said in the post above, the ex3 rez kills that of the 550d. however, people can prefer the 550d's "cinematic" image over the ex3.

Not sure what you mean. There are dozens or hundreds of posts out there that point out exactly what DSLRs are capable of, and what they're not capable of, and they are not overly sharp. They're, at best, about 720p resolution. And the Canons aren't anywhere near competitive with a hacked GH13 in terms of overall sharpness.

This isn't hidden knowledge, but unfortunately it has been buried under a massive mound of hype. Search around here, or read my article on "aliasing" and you'll find lots of info about what the reality is, versus what the perception is.

Read this, it will explain what's happening and why the 7D appears to be sharper, when in fact it isn't.

Oh well i didnt look into it enough, for somone who does mostly documentay nature type filming i have made a mistake, these 550s are more for on site production films stuff.:(
