550D/GH13 comparision shot

nope. i give my clients blu-ray disc's - full 1080p. t2i footage on it, 7D and 5D mkii. why did i never pay attention to these "detail problems" you're talking about? oh...maybe because it was never there. clients are normal people, not technical geeks - thats who we deal with, thats majority of who i do my work for. they dont care and will never notice whatever you're talking about, even though i myself dont even know what you're talking about. good luck with your career bud, hope you make a living out of this - comparing cameras, while all we enjoy what we should with and put smiles on our clients' faces.

Let's try to tame the personal attacks here. There are actually people out there that make a living out of that, too. They're called technicians.

GrunF is presenting a technical discussion on a technical forum about his technical findings without bias. The responses, however, are very biased.

I used to be defensive with my Canon 7D when it came to the chart tests showing the GH1 having cleaner results, of course I wanted my camera to be the best. Well I sold the 7D and got the GH1 and am never looking back.

technicians, thats the word i was looking for. my apologies if i made it sound personal, honestly was not my intention. i just dont see these "detailed problems" in 1080p everyones talking about and showing in their frame shots... my friend owns a gh1/13 which i have access to and shot numerous times with, theres nothing thats making me want to jump to it. absolutely nothing i see thats better than the combo of having 5d mkii, 7D and t2i.

This is all no different than the Xbox vs ps3 comparisons, or Apple vs PC, or iPhone vs Palm pre or whatever. It's all silly. People have some overwhelming need to own "the best" which is already subjective, but then they start discussing cameras and videogame consoles like a sports team, haha. As someone else said 99.9% of people will never notice most of the little technical things that seem to be discussed more than actual films or techniques.

It took a long time, but I'm finally done with all of that and I'm just going to start filming. The t2i blows all of my previous cameras out of the water, so for me that's the end of it.

Having said that, there's nothing "wrong" with comparing the minutiae of all these things, just I've had my fill of it as a time waster.

From my experience with all, they're comparable in lowlight.
Just read what Philip Bloom wrote about the hack, concerning low light:
Yes the codec is a MASSIVE improvement but it doesn’t have the low light of the Canons, not even the T2i and doesn’t come close to the 5Dmkii, but still as MASSIVE leap up.
He went even further to say this yesterday when asked if Canon should come out with a new firmware update...
i don’t think so…i have been shooting with it and it’s disappointing for me. The camera is still v poor in low light compared to the Canons
As you guys probably know he also wrote this about the new hack...
It’s better looking than the 5D Mark II’s H.264 and less compressed
Sounds like the hack has really turned this thing into one incredible camera. That's good for everyone.

It's a pretty amazing hack, but I'm still not seeing anything amazing that has been done with it. Before the hack all I saw on vimeo were shots of trees, kids, cats, barbecue, and girlfriends. Since the hack all I'm seeing are shots of ducks, trees, kids, barbecue, and girlfriends.

This hack is great and I will probably pick up a GH13 at some point, I think it really benefits the small few who are really shooting and making films and it just gives the hobbyists another excuse to feel like part of something larger.

Forgive me for telling it like it is. :)

Forgiven.

Couldn't agree more.

I don't think there's any reason to freak out and sell the farm and reinvest in tech. This stuff changes so fast that if you don't adjust your thinking you could get caught up in bad cycle of purchases. If you're heavily invested in Canon gear, wait a few months to see what's in the pipeline. We're at that time of year where new products will start to roll out. It's happened each year in late Summer to early fall so if you are just buying a camera and can wait, wait a few months. Or buy used.

And for a reality check look at the GH13 forum to see the differing results people are getting with the hack. Some are getting stable performance, others are getting card errors. This isn't a simple hack and shoot situation, you are going to have to test and invest in the proper cards and scour the forums here to find the right formula. That in itself could eat up precious time if you're about to shoot a film, time that might be better spent with using something like an EX1 as an A camera and a 7D/T2i for B camera close-ups.

thank you. well said!

I would like to point people directly to this post http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=2015824&postcount=252 in place of the examples shown here as I believe it more accurately illustrates the differences between the canons and the new hacked gh13. I believe it illustrates that the gh13 is a more suitable wide camera that does resolve more with no moiring, but the difference isn't as insanely night and day as the examples in this thread seem to illustrate. I believe there was no ill intent in this threads examples, I simply believe the thread I linked has a more perfectly executed comparison.

Having said that, I have a few quick questions as a 7D owner who is fairly impressed with the new gh13 capabilities. With this hack in place recording to avchd at 1080p 24fps with one of the higher bitrates, roughly how long can you record before you are forced to stop due to the fat32 file limitation. Is it significantly shorter than the 7D which is about 12 minutes? Also, does it record to CF cards like the 7D? Lastly, is there any way to put Canon EF lenses on this camera, and if so how do you adjust the aperture as there is no physical aperture ring on these lenses.

:)
at least we're shooting ducks now

I think the thing that hurts this camera almost as much as the mushy codec did, is it's monitoring out woes. Lets hope that could get solved because it most likely will continue on the ducks, trees, kids, barbecue, and girlfriends path without it.

Like I said, I don't shoot under street lamps. That's not my definition of lowlight.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, just as those who own the cameras are entitled to compare and contrast.

Those who don't like it should go check out the huge filmmaking subforum section where a lot less camera comparison happens and a lot more doing occurs.

Lots of people are claiming that these tests are silly, useless, shouldn't be done at all, etc. Why? No one here is trying to say one camera is the best. These are simply tests -- perhaps to help people decide which camera is right for them. It's not all just technical one-up-manship. Such tests have practical value for those deciding which camera to purchase/use for their next project.

I disagree. We're not bandying about arguments based on experience or subjective variables. We're comparing images taken in a (semi) controlled fashion. Yes, these aren't academic tests, GrunF isn't shooting charts -- but, for me at least, it's absolutely useful to see how these two cameras perform when put side by side. That's not say these tests are 100% accurate and I definitely am not going to stake my opinion of either camera entirely on this thread, but I'm curious to see what GrunF comes up with nonetheless.

I hear you, just finished shooting my next short film with the T2i. :)

The low light capabilities were very helpful to me though. That's why I brought it up as you mentioned Bloom's name.

Comparisons are fine. Some people put too much stock in them though.

Dude, lighten up. It's just a comparison. And yes, I'm a "technician".I don't make living of this though. I'm just excited with this new technology, having experienced 16mm+Nagra, U-Matic LB, U-Matic HB, Beta SP, first NLE's etc. I haven't worked with video for a decade but I find it fairly exciting again.

I like technical aspects of video. It's interesting. I leave filmmaking to people who are good at it, as you probably are.

The problem will always be that it is very hard to do an apples to apple comparison of the results. The sharpening algorithms in the GH1 are different and if you really want to find out apples to apples, it's about going through all the sharpening IN camera and OUT of camera to try and figure out where you can get the images to the same level. Lot's of people turn off the sharpening in Camera on the Canons almost completely and add it in during post to get better results. I've seen a lot of articles about the sharpening of the GH1. It's clear both cameras play with the pixels once they come off the sensor. What people really want to know is when tuning images off of both cameras, what is the sweet spot on both? Again, both in and out of camera.

I think the GH13 hacks are great, and I am very impressed with a lot of the tests I have seen. It makes me very hopeful for the AF100. That is a good thing.

Pertaining to Moire, given the level of aliasing I see in ALL the GH1 shots practically, I think someone needs to do some tests with highly textured fabrics up close. I bet you WILL see moire because aliasing and moire come from the same limitations. Moire just occurs when you have multiple parallel lines so that the aliasing creates patterns that you see. That said, having no rainbows in them is a sure PLUS on the GH1 side.

Of course you will. It just has a higher threshold than the Canon cameras. Much higher. It takes a very very fine pattern to set the GH1 off.

It only takes a striped shirt to put the Canon away.

Actually, it is a bit of a different comparison. The problem with the Canons is the rainbows. When I try and pull that out of the equation, the moire is definitely a lot more pleasing, and a lot less noticeable. However, the rainbow kicks in very early and is horrible looking. If someone wants to hack the Canon, that is the first thing I'd be trying to figure out is how to get rid of that!
