50Mbps AVCHD Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch

I made some modifications to this patch:

Sandisk Extreme 3 16g class 10
Native On
FHD/SH 49000000
Overall 50000000
GOP 10 ( 1080 )
GOP 6 ( 720 )

I unchecked to put it back up to 60p and not 30p

Pretty reliable and stable settings, good bit rate, has not crashed. I'm waiting to get my computer back from being fix, should be in tomorrow or friday and then i'll hook you guys up with some footage.

hello x_WOrPIG_x,

i used the 40mbs reliable patch bits with

native on
(Your GOP Settings)

First Test was good with manual focus and standardlens on 25mm 60 Shutter speed. I will next go to the window and try to kill the cam with some trees and flickering leaves:Drogar-Mark-10(DBG)

The only native on mode who could handle this situation was under 40000000 bits
... but i did not play around with these GOP settings...

In these patchs are also the "patches for testers" AVCHD Compression settings setted to - Preset bit1 and Preset bit2: 180

the vids with mid detailed scenes were very awesome.
and for my suprising..... i was on the window and it can handle also high detail scenes over 10 seconds without hanging up!:Drogar-Mark-10(DBG):Drogar-Mark-10(DBG)

thats anough to me to go with it.

I have had some luck modifying the original Fast Action 3 Gop patch using some of your ideas above.

Take the Fast Actio 3 Gop patch
Tick Native 24/25
FSH 49000000
1080/24 GOP = 5
1080/25 GOP=5

Leave everything else the same. Using this, I've been able to shoot the Pappas star chart in FHD 24p native mode for 2 minutes before the write error using a Dana Elect Class 10 32gb card.

I have never been able to shoot that chart in FHD 24p native more than 5 seconds with any other combo. I would love reliability but I would take partial reliability for 24p native as this is the only reason I own this cam. FWIW: settings over 49 mill gave me an immediate write error on the chart in FHD 24 native mode as did any GOp setting for 1080p under 5. I get intermittent 192s from the chart in stream player with this setting but not on any other normal footage so far. Perhaps others can test further, semi-reliable 24p native is more important to me than no 24p native at all.

Great discovery:thumbsup:

Am giving up on this for now. Best I could get in 24p native with Lpowell's fast 3 gop setting is as follows:

FSH=49000000
Set 1080 24 Gop to 5 (or 3 if you're brave, a few more crashes but better motion, I like 3 the best)
Set 1080 25 Gop to 5
Set Overall Bitrate to 86000000
Tick Native 24p
Set preset bitrate under tester section (the first preset bitrate) to 300
Adjust Constant for 1080p under AVCHD research to 900000
Adjust Constant for 720p under AVCHD research to 740000
Leave every other original Lpowell Fast 3 Gop setting the same.

All tests of the above are done using the kit 14-140mm Panasonic lens with OIS on but autofocus off. When not shooting the star chart or static grass (normal shooting mode), autofocus and all auto lens functions work fine.

Using 'smooth mode' and setting sharpness to -2 (this is critical) I usually manage to get 1 minute out of the Pappas
star chart. Normal shooting looks great and motion looks good. It will crash when shooting static grass after about
30 seconds.

And these 24p native videos with these settings will be playable back in Camera!

These settings are unreliable and a major compromise BUT it captures most of the stuff I shoot beautifully in 24p
native and the sharpness reduction is only needed for very detailed scenes (in fact the sharpness reduction is barely
noticable and more filmic I think in 1080 because of the higher rez).

I have noticed when shooting the star chart that if I start on something else and tilt down to it I seem to get
longer times before a write error. Also, my Dana-elect Class 10 is only getting an average of 36 burst speeds,
Scandisk extreme class 10s get a lot higher, so maybe they can do better.

I sure wish we could crack reliable 24p native as so far this footage is effortlessly transcoded into beautiful DNXHD
175x by Avid Media Composer 5.

Please note Lpowell is correct stating there is no reliable 24p native setting, YET. But hope springs eternal.

Thanks always to the gang for providing this great hacking resource.

Still new to this so not gonna spew opinions like i know what i'm doing... but tried these settings on the starchart and no stop in recording (sandisk C10). Gonna see if it holds up IRL tomorrow. Did u edit your post recently alyn99? Cus pretty sure put in OB90000000, not 86...

so? how did this work for you? Are you saying that you could shoot in 60p with this patch??

quick question--(it's been a while), I have 40Mbps reliability patch in cam now--do I have to reinstall factory firmware in cam BEFORE applying any new patches?? Or does the version increment tab take care of all that? Don't wanna brick my cam!

...do I have to reinstall factory firmware in cam BEFORE applying any new patches??
No need for concern, I set up the Reliable In-Camera Playback Patch to enable you to install any other patch any time you choose to do so, including the original factory firmware.

Thanks lpowell - I think I get that...but, do I just install over old firmware, meaning...no having to step back to original firmware before updating new patch??

great thanks guys--so I've got a couple quick tests under way using
Worpig's mod to lpowell's 50 Mbps patch

Sandisk Extreme 3 8g class 10
Native On
FHD/SH 49000000
Overall 50000000

so far so good for me too-- no errors (just some interiors shot/ no grass/ no trees) tested both 1080p24 and 720p60 modes--transcoded/ and conformed the 60fps in cinema tools to test the overcrank...all looks good --more tomorrow -lovin it thanks!

Actually I did edit the post a couple minutes after I put it up. The current post has the settings that seem to work the best with one modification --

I am now using the same 740000 as the same constant for 1080p and 720p. It gives me a whisker better results.

And there's one other odd thing. I stumbled on using a 4 gop setting for 1080p and it seems to have less 192s frames when shooting the star chart. But here's the weird thing - even though I set it at 4 gops it's only laying down 3! This is a stumper. lpowell, any ideas on this one??? I uploaded the firmware twice and checked the setting. It is 4 but laying down 3.

But so far all the 24 native footage I'm laying down is astounding and playable in camera. I was shooting a lot of high speed 4 lane traffic today and got no hickups or stutters. I did manage to freeze it up when I shot an up angle of the 4 lanes of traffic against a backdrop of leafy trees with the wind blowing. But I'm not complaining. I'd rather have native 24p than the 24 in a wrapper. Would settle for 24 native 720p, but don't think the Gh-1 is capable.

I really think my card may be the limitation. Would love someone who has a Hoodman raw card to test these settings.

One of the worst case tests I used to tweak the 50Mbps AVCHD 3-Frame GOP Patch was to record the Pappas charts for the full length of a 16GB Class 6 SD card. Since you're willing to accept lower reliability than that, you may be able to achieve higher bitrates using Class 10 cards. Be sure to test it panning across high-detail scenes as well as mounted staticly on a tripod.

If there is any occurance of empty 192-byte frames it is the mark of a corrupted recording. These videos may appear to play back normally, but the 192-byte frames will make the video appear to pause briefly for their duration.

When you put the codec under enough stress, it may emit GOP's with the wrong number of P-frames. This is a sign that the encoder is close to breaking down. When counting GOP-lengths, be sure to include the I-frame in the count.

Ahh, Thanks for clarifying this. I wasn't counting the I frame in the GOP count. Do you think we'll ever manage to hack settings for a reliable 24p native mode even with low data rates, or is your opinion that the GH-1 can't handle this? I know Panasonic says the coming Gh-2 will do 24p native. Perhaps they've modified their codec?

Stable low bit rate 24native. Can someone break this?

After literally 120 tries I managed to get a stable (subject to someone else doing further testing) 24p native out of the Gh-1 when filming the star chart. Went for 3 minutes before turning it off and analyzing the mts in the stream app.

It was perfect. All Gops were perfect. No 192s whatsover.

It's a only 32 bit stream with a 15 gop but it's stable. I'm getting much higher bandwidth and better image with other settings but the star chart beats them up and the gops are unstable. Here's what I did. Load the Pana 1.32 firmware into ptools then save it as a preset. Then only do the following mods:

Camera=GH1 v1.32
[Settings]
Version increment=1
Prevent version compare=Checked
Third-party battery=Checked
All Interface Languages=Checked
30min limit removal=Checked
PAL<->NTSC Menu=Checked
Native 24p/25p=Checked
720p59,94fps->29,97fps=Checked
Video Bitrate FHD/SH=32000000
Overall Bitrate=34000000
1080p24 GOP Size=15
Constant for 1080p=777600

This should get you stable 1080p 24 native. I have not tested the other modes as I'm trying to hit stable 24 native with the star chart and try for higher bitrates from there. If anyone has the chance to try and break this with a Class 10 card I'd appreciate it.

I tried your setting and got error after 10 seconds

UPDATE on
Worpig's mod to lpowell's 50 Mbps patch

Sandisk Extreme 3 8g class 10
Native On
FHD/SH 49000000
Overall 50000000
GOP 10 ( 1080 )
GOP 6 ( 720 )

...went out and shot some real world stuff, got a good bunch of card speed errors. Found it was mostly when using kit lens and zooming.

However, I feel like I may have stumbled onto a glitch in the forced "battery removal trick".

I found that as soon as I got the error, if I tapped on the shutter button a couple times immediately after I got the error, the message would go away the recording of course stopped but the cam would be ready to shoot again, as opposed to letting it sit there and freeze.
I was able to retain and safely transcode all footage including the clips that stopped abruptly with the error.

Definitely need to dial these settings back though, as I am getting ready to use this cam in some paid gigs.

Definitely don't use 24p native for a paid gig. But I have been using these higher bit rate settings in native mode at 1080 with 4 Gop and have only glitch a few times in very detailed, highly active scenes. Otherwise I've been getting great images with it. And they all play back in camera.
