5 year old 50D does raw video courtesy of Magic Lantern!

Does the hack unlock the video mode to shoot h.264 as well or will it only do video by way of the raw hack?

I mean the raw video is amazing but for day-to-day bread and butter type stuff I'm still going to shoot the regular compression on my 5D3. That's one of the cool parts of the raw hack to me--I don't have to use it. I would be interested in just having the video unlocked in a $350 body.

Awesome regardless.

I'm always amazed what those guys are able to do.
I mean, if you have a 50D laying around, you suddenly have a raw video camera for free.

Since the 50D is pretty rugged, even if you buy one now, it's in the same price range than a Hero3 but with much better image quality and lowlight abilities now. So there is your raw action/crash cam that intercuts with your Alexa.

This is all so unreal. Some people in their living rooms, unlocking features from 5 year old cameras...WTF CANON. I understand market share, I understand some of the economics but this is incredible. A camera that was never "able" to shoot video...Is no shooting RAW video. Insanity. I am super impressed with what those folks are doing

Yeah, there are actually a couple of comparison videos of the 50D on h.264 mode vs the raw mode. Crazy stuff, I had a 50D...changed to the d90, now the 50D does better video...lol, from no video at all when I owned it. Apparently it wasn't hard for ML to get h.264 from the 50D since a video mode has been there the whole time, just locked in firmware.

That footage looks really nice- wonder if this bumps up the values of 50D's? I'd like to pick one up now.

ML had unlocked h.264 video recording with the 50D a year or more ago. Don't know if it survived all the updates or not, but it was available at one time. Not sure if it was reliable either. Searching through some of the older posts on https://vimeo.com/groups/magiclantern might revel some more info if you happen to have a 50D and want to do video.

Cheers,
Pete

I have a 50D and 5D3 sitting on my desk. The 50D can shoot 1920x1080 at 30fps to H264 at about 41mb/s. No other framerate is possible in H264.
50D can also shoot raw video up to 1592x1062 if your card can shuffle data fast enough. I got reliable 1280x720 at 25fps working with a Sandisk 60MB/s card.

According to some 50D becomes a raw video monster with the ML software but I don't see it as such. It's cool yes but nothing like what the 5D3 does. It's noisier and less refined than the 5D3 and also can't do full HD.

Makes sense, but what's the difference in latitude with the 50D image vs. the 5D image? Resolution vs. latitude with a coefficient of price?

It might not put out as big a picture as the Mark ll but as far as resolved detail....they look about the same once blown up to me.

Hey guys. I just traded my 60D for a 50D and cash. Must say I was happy with my first day shooting with it. I had no problems at all, and some of the detail i got in my shots were incredible. The 12,800ISO shots at the end also destroy what my 60D was capable of doing at a high ISO.

Could that work on a 40D as well? I mean, they are not that different....

Porting ML to the 40D has been stalled due to lack of interest and probably lack of ML developers working on this model. This is what I understand from the comments made by developers over at the ML forums.

They have announced though that ML will now run on the T5i and SL1 (aka, 700D, 100D)
