FS7: 5 reasons the URSA Mini is better than the Sony FS7

Geoff Boyle talking bollocks, who'd have thought it?
A production executive working in the US would be crazy not to shoot in 4K, when there are so many pro tier 4K cameras around and "shot in 4K" advertising indicates the cutting edge of technology. The guy next to you shoots in 4K, as does the next guy over. It means you have to shoot in 4K too.

And ARRI doesn't have a native 4K camera. And, if the industry purchases a bunch of new F55's and Red Dragons, there'll be a lot of used Alexa's available for buy or rent. The primary beneficiaries will be the second and third tier markets - the regional/ smaller economies - but the sales of the new Alexa's will fall off precipitously. And, as Henry Ford hundred years ago, ARRI doesn't really make anything else.

Really? I'm just curious, do a bunch of TV stations in your area shoot on 4K now? Are they making plans to actually broadcast
in 4K soon? I haven't seen it in the 'broadcast arena' yet, but I'm not following it as closely as I used to.
I HAVE seen production companies adopting 4K though.

On a related topic, in the last few months for my 'big, out of town shoots', I was hired to shoot for Disney, Al Rocker Entertainment, and
Good Morning America. The first two, specified 1080P as deliverables.......and Good Morning America wanted 720P.

So I'm going to hold off on acquiring a mini ursa 4.6K until this magenta corner cast sorts itself out...

Below is white piece of paper over lens mount test.

That's how it is.
Every camera has it's own quirks...

I learned to love the FS7. SLog plus a slight grading in Resolve gives me all I ever want.

Footage from BM cameras often give me more headeaches in post...

That sort of thing is usually lens dependent, the angle of the light and the sensor micro lenses. We had issues with rangefinder lenses of a variety of cameras. And even Leica had some major issues on their cameras too.

Sure maybe it's wrong to put paper over lens mount as a test, and maybe it's better / worse with specific lenses being used.

People ought to specify the lens and aperture setting and ISO being used, but they are too caught up in the issue to bother.

The solution for now is to crop 4k from the camera, and as mentioned not all cameras shipped seem to have the problem.

I totally missed the bit about paper. Wow, that is a problem then.

I have photographed a full feature film with 2 BMCC in 2013/14.

I can tell you, these guys have avery nice color science and dynamic range, but lack other things.
We're still working on the IR issue we had with NDs that days. It's horrible!
The missing AA/low pass filter doesn't really help either.

Our Sony's will likely also have some vignetting with the same test.... but it's not any vignetting thats a problem, it's the magenta cast.

My theory which no one has said yet is the enclosure housing around the sensor is causing reflection around the edges creating this hue. Magenta in our case.

We saw something similar on F5/55 with light leaking in that caused sensor grid and some pink tint to appear on footage only under certain conditions when shooting flares.

Is this not simply an IR sensitive sensor recording without an OLPF with IR cut? If so that's the sort of corner cutting that stops them having a foothold in the pro market.

No idea what the lens is but that's also a pretty spectacular vignette. There's like a S16mm frame in the middle not deeply affected by it. And ironic, because corner cutting is exactly what you'd have to do to make the frame useable.

Here is my paper lens mount test on my Sony F55.

CineEI mode, slog3, 4400k, 0db gain, 640 ISO, MLUT 709-A enabled, no internal ND's, paper exposed for 65%. Small adjust to gain in DaVinci to color balance.

Dennis,

What steps did you follow for that white paper test? I still have the Ursa Mini 4.6K until Tuesday and want to test it.

Still haven't gotten around to putting up any of the footage from Tuesday shoot. Mostly with the Zeiss Otus 55/1.4 and so far what I've seen is gorgeous. And such skin tones...

@Ben, ahahaahahah

@Ned - find a large window, the larger the better because you don't want fall-off from the window itself, etc.. or at least the closer you go with the camera to the window the better. If you have a light based tracing box that can work too.

I put white piece of paper over the lens mount. Right now I have a ProLock on my F55 which is fairly flat except two small screws on one side but I managed to get it pressed flat on that area of the mount.

From there I would just expose for the piece of paper between 60 and 90%. Maybe try both because I read online that the URSA may be affected differently at different exposures. You can also read the entire thread here (only 7 pages thus far) to see what others have done right and what they have done wrong in their tests: https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46112&start=300

If you test it, and we don't hear from you, we will assume that men in black came to visit you.
