FS7: 5 reasons the URSA Mini is better than the Sony FS7

After having downloaded some DNGs it appears that the raw data in the file is 11 bits padded to 12, that's before the linearisation table is applied. Other BMC DNGs i've looked at with the same method have been 12 bit.

I downloaded the balcony shot with the sun in. The centre of the sun isn't clipping either, so implies that the white level isn't maxed out.

Nice image though!

I'll need to do some more investigation when i can grab the time, perhaps there's something up with my workflow.

I definitely think the mini ursa 4.6k has edge over FS7. It seems to do RAW really well and this is where you can bend the hell out of the images without breaking them. Love it.

As been mentioned in other threads the 4K Mini has gotten atrocious reviews on B&H, mostly due to quality control issues. Combined with Blackmagic's history of poor support could/should give any professional pause.

You're referring to the URSA Mini 4K, which is completely different to the URSA Mini 4.6K which is the one I'm comparing with the FS7 etc
Which makes it a bit slanderous to hate on the URSA Mini 4.6K by spreading falsehoods which are not relevant to it....

Nope, if you go and read them you will see the bulk of those poor reviews on B&H are from people who were fools in buying a camera without first properly researching it. You don't buy a camera which is very clearly *not* a low light camera and expect it perform well in lowlight as is! If they'd known about the history of the BMPC4K then none of this would be a surprise, and there wouldn't be anywhere as many bad reviews on B&H.

For instance just look at the difference between the PL and EF version in the reviews it gets. I expect the PL buyers have higher standards, but also are more educated on average then the EF buyers.

EF is sitting at an astonishingly 2.5 stars, but the PL version has 4 stars. And would be even higher if not for the only one bad review the PL version got.... from yup, you guessed it, a guy who didn't realise the blatantly obvious that it is not a low light camera! Wish people would stop dragging BMD's name through the mud for mistakes they make.

I don't doubt quality control issues from any company, but you can't take every single B&H review too seriously.

There are dozens and dozens of happy BM camera operators on BMCuser and the official forum. I've owned over 12 different BM cameras and all of them were fine if you understood the company and have been with them from the beginning.

I've owned two of the 4K minis and 80% of the material discussed in those reviews is nonsense. The only legitimate problem concerns the horizontal lines, which a firmware fix was released for just this past week.

John doesn't do any paid work for Blackmagic.

Not like it matters, it's Alexa... you'd be insinuating that he dumbed down the Alexa portion to make the mini46 look better???

Hi.

To be perfectly clear, I'm not paid by Blackmagic. The Alexa side by side test was not 'paid" for by Blackmagic either. And while we're at it, tell me what other official test video has side by sides with a competing camera ?

Its ts not an offical video. It's done in controlled conditions and at 3200k. I've documented the lighting so those that want to actually go download the shots can judge for themselves.

I'm pretty used to ProRes out of the Alexa, but the raw files do seem to be a noticeable step up in Resolve.
