FS7: 5 reasons the URSA Mini is better than the Sony FS7

Don't know all the other trivial specs, there is one thing I do know..... The Aussie accent sounds barbaric, they are usually the loudest bunch in public restaurants, and other places of prevalence. If I lived in a country with as many poisonous spiders and venomous snakes, not to mention sharks and deadly jellyfish I'd be pissed too!

btw.. URSA mini 4,6K finally shipping but no global shutter

"We have really appreciated everyone’s patience in waiting for these cameras and apologize for the delay. It took much longer than we had thought to get the cameras to where we needed them to be, but I am incredibly proud to bring 15 stop, Super 35 true digital film cameras to everyone...

However the big reason for the delay is the problems we were having with the global shutter feature in both of these cameras. The problems are different between the models and on the Micro Cinema Camera we have been seeing random bad pixels when in global shutter mode. On the URSA Mini 4.6K we have been seeing problems with sensor calibration when using global shutter.

Our engineers have been killing themselves working on this for months, but the performance is just not where it needs to be for us to feel comfortable shipping with global shutter, and so we have had to remove the global shutter feature from both these cameras to allow them to ship.

Obviously this is very upsetting for us, as we really wanted to produce high dynamic range cameras that also had a global shutter for an all in one design. The reality is that this is just one feature on cameras that are ready right now to shoot with and get incredible results. So we have made the decision to ship now."

whilst global shutter would have been lovely I think the feature that will make many people want the BM 4.6k is the image it creates - looks nicer than the fs7 to my eyes
 
Remember when this was the camera that had Red terrified? When it was the FS7 killer and the camera that got you 95% of an Alexa for 10% of the price?

Every time less lunatic minds urged caution and referred to the issue of judging a camera on paper specs, and pointing to BMC's past history as a red flag they were shouted down. I hope people get a great camera for their money but BMC surely now take the current crown for overpromising and underdelivering.


Is the price changing now it isn't a global shutter camera?
 
Something about this camera has obviously rubbed you up the wrong way - I am not a BM evangelist come to argue here in the Sony zone - for sure there are many apsects that Black Magic need to prove themselves in, and the fs7 is a fine allrounder of a camera - but from the footage I have seen, and having had a little play with the raw files BM released - the colour and thickness of image is really beautiful - whilst the fs7 raw has been pretty disappointing, or should I say Sony has underdelivered

Every marketing suit knows that most people buy on paper specs.

The Ursa will create a lovely image but it's not the right type of camera for me. I don't ever rule out BMD making my next camera but it just hasn't happened yet.

Sony didn't underdeliver, they near enough outright lied about the FS7 being a raw camera in the usable sense. Please don't think for a second I have a nice word to say about Sony and their business practices and customer support. That said, in a practical and professional environment for all the things it is NOT, the things that the FS7 ACTUALLY IS is still impossible to beat at the pricepoint.

I don't get rubbed up by cameras. I do , however, certainly get irked when people who have very limited professional experience shout from the rooftops that one camera that they have never used and which hasn't been released yet is much better than another camera they have never used. Which seems to happen with Blackmagic Cameras more than any other brand. That has been the narrative of just about every camera/production forum I have visited over the last year.

Great to hear that BM released some raw images for people to play with and that you like them.
