4K will require hardware update

Please share the love the first moment you get your hand on that baby EAumen. I know deep down our FS700 camera pack a 2K/4K sensor with kick ass slowmo. I just want to see why we should pay the extra $4000 to $5000 to have the either the sony external record or the Odyssey.

Sony's AXS-R5 alone is more than 5 grands so it should be more between 6000$ and 10000$, depending on either CD or Sony solution and the number of (insanely expensive) medias you buy.

Thanks for the tests Freheit. I would love to see some internal AVCHD S-Log as well. Also, Cine 1 is much better in low light / low contrast than Cine 4, which IMO is best in daytime and high contrast situations.

yes, you're right!
the reason i did the comparison with CINE4 because AB_NEXLOG and the other popular PP setting are based on CINE4. so i tried that test like CINE4(default), AB_NEXLOG(modified), and S-Log2.

and yes, i will post the next sample with AVCHD/ProRes comparison under the lowlight.

cheers,

Actually it's not "between 6000$ and 10000$ " but between $9700 with 1 card and $11500 with 2 cards ( without cost of extra-battery )

The suggested U.S. list pricing for the new products:
HXR-IFR5 interface unit $2000
AXR-R5 RAW Recorder $6,300 / $5350
AXS-512S24 512Gb Memory Card $2,100
/ $1800
AXS-CR1 card reader $660.00 / $550

with battery it will be even more -
BPFL75 Olivine V Mount Battery $ $541
BCL90 Battery Charger for Olivine Batteries $829

------
$12870

How all of this will work when Canon 5D Mark II, Mark III, and even 600D will get final Magic Lantern make available to record14bit linear uncompressed RGGB RAW in-camera ??

http://www.eoshd.com/content/10324/...continuous-raw-recording-on-canon-5d-mark-iii

I hope Sony will lower the cost of RAW recorder and Interface unit as well as cost of 512GB memory cards and reader ... as with any circumstances we record much LESS with Slow Motion, than with regular 24fps... so?

What a reason for many people pay SO MUCH when we can get Magic Lantern for free?? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I'm super happy about the 5D hack, especially since most of my lenses will work on Canon. Still probably won't shoot much RAW either way. But maybe this will push Sony to better the FS700 firmware update to make the FS700 more competitive because I have NO DOUBT that the Magic Lantern kids will kill it (based on their past record) and 5D III sales will go through the roof.

+1!

i'm typical DSLR shooter first then moved to FS700 type of guy and this magic lantern news made me big smile! there is no reason i wouldn't go get that free unstable yet powerful hacked firmware!

speaking of the firmware, as far as i know the firmware we've talked about FS700 is NOT going to be like "free/downloadable" stuff. it comes with the hardware upgrade so we must spend at least few hundred dollars to get both of the firmware+hardware upgrade, one package deal.

no matter what you need, one upgrade package will give you all the function, 4K2K out, S-Log2, SDI Rec trigger, and couple more small but nice functions.

That's why there is odyssey 7q option, whuch is much cheaper

5d Mark III sensor (even in still mode, RAW, full 24 MP) still only has 11.7 EV of dynamic range, according to dxomark

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Camera-Sensor-Database/Canon/EOS-5D-Mark-III

14-bit is not going to change anything as far DR is concerned on 5D Mark III. Keep in mind that 11.7 EV is the best that sensor can do with 24 MP still RAW at ISO 100.

The fact is that 5D Mark III sensor doesn't even need 14-bit. The sensor DR is even in best case scenereo is only 11.7 EV. 12-bit is enough to cover that even in still mode

I agree with you 100%. I would never sell my FS700 'cause I will have a heart attack if I can't shoot my clip at 240FPS hehe.

I meant whether you choose Sony or Convergent Design solution but your math is right.

Sony's Olivines fits cosmetically nicely on the back of the recorder but you can mount any V-Mount batteries so you don't have to go this expensive route and save some money.

Even if it produces "nicer" images a 5D is a 5D, so NOT a real camera and a PITA to operate...

It's a shame BMD doesn't have plans for a 4K portable recorder... I mean CD's Odyssey 7Q is nice and all be the price of their medias is a total joke (reminds me of REDMAGS !)

It's just now starting but I can't wait for this 5DmkIII RAW hype-train to stop. We've yet to see how practical it actually is to shoot with this setup (overheat? $300+ CF cards? etc) and most importantly it's not officially supported. Even if the 5D could magically shoot 240fps 4K RAW with a free hack, there would be people who buy Sony's hardware because it's supported. You pay for reliability. If you're using your camera professionally and charging thousands of dollars to shoot something, it can be worth it to invest the money in something that is dependable.

That's some pretty mad hacking there on that camera (5D) although i see noise banding and patterning on the example still on EosHD. The magic lantern people just did what everyone wants - simple raw output from the camera and deal with it in post.

Good on them, it will be very interesting to see what happens next. Whether 5Ds start exploding, whether Canon locks this down (i'm sure could) as it will destroy any sales of their other cameras.

Ditch the 700 for a 5D? I doubt it, we still wait to see the 4K output though...

cheers

Dear Friends,

I try hard to provide helpful information on DVXUser and respond professionally in all cases.

Our Convergent Design SSD's are professional media, not consumer level SSD's.

Consumer level SSD's will not be able to record, reliably at 240 fps in 2K Raw, nor 60 fps in 4K uncompressed.

Nor will consumer level SSD's handle recording video without dropping frames.

Nor can they handle conditions that routinely occur on set, such as a sudden loss of power, or being removed while they are in use, either recording or playing back, or just performing internal housekeeping.

And our SSD's internal firmware can be updated from within the Odyssey7 or Odyssey7Q as improvements are made.

Please note that formatting our SSD's should be very fast, faster than any consumer level SSD. Our preliminary figures for formatting the SSD's is around 10 Seconds (this value is subject to change).

Now, comparing true professional media to true professional media, devices that can actually handle write speeds of 400 Megabytes per second, without slowing down from 0 to 100% full, what media are you finding that is less expensive?

If possible, please be specific. Please note that our special SSD's are not available from the actual SSD manufacturer via normal retail channels.

Media for cameras that can record in 4K at only 30 fps, or can only record compressed video are not true, fair comparisons.

And our SSD's Bill of Materials, the internal memory, the internal firmware, and everything else is locked down to prevent unexpected, and undesirable changes from being made that would affect performance.

And our SSD's have long endurance, far longer than regular SSD's.

So, while still attempting to be polite, why is the price of our SSD's a joke?

The Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q are professional devices and require professional media.

Our SSD pricing is lower than any other professional media that we know.

I don't know why so many people think that I don't want my FS-700... I just want Sony, Canon... and others to reduce they GREEDY prices!! :2vrolijk_08:
... I'm tired to death of hearing a lot of argument they have about how "SPECIAL" they SSD and Olivine battery are, we know it already... ... but when someone want to take $550 for CARD READER in addition of $1800 card and $829 for BATTERY CHARGER ... ... or $1500 to $2500 for CODEC in addition of $2300 of recorder and $1200 for every 480 SSD ... it's look for me as it SOMEONE selling you a new CAR for $50K ...and instead to give you 0% financing, CHARGE you EXTRA for they "SPECIAL WHEELS" and "ODORLESS GASOLINE" :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Seems like they still don't understand the difference between Hollywood with Sony F65 :cheesy: ... and poor indie filmmakers who often spend for equipment more than they get for a job...

( sorry for my English.. )

+1 Serge !

I'm sure other manufacturers (BMD ?) will go with 4K portable recorders but it seems like Sony is keeping the cherry on the cake for himself as top specs seems to be locked for other manufacturers (4K RAW and 4K HFR so to speak).

That or wait for an affordable 4K camera with everything built in... (BMD again ?).

BMPC 4K for sure! I ready pre-order it :2vrolijk_08: ...and even it have smaller sensor ( 22.12mm X 11.88mm ) it have GLOBAL SHUTTER and option to shoot 3840 x 2160 23.98p, 24p, 25p, 29.97p and 30p - seems like good BACK-UP and SECOND camera for my FS-700

first I would like to say thank you very much for sharing your time and the information which very valuable for all of us.

it's very special thing to me cause I'm from the country barely has the information about your products.

and of course, there are plenty of people will purchase you guy's odyssey packages anyway! yes, I'm the one of them! :)

thanks again,

a copypaste from my post in the other fs700 thread:

i think the big thing here is that the "poor indie filmmakers" were given a nice camera with a great amount of features for a really reasonable price, and such a filmmaker expects a recorder which somehow matches the price of the camera, maybe in the 1000 to 2000 bucks range. And they get a lot of recorders that give them better quality in this price range, but they simply wont get 4K and 2K RAW/uncompressed up to 240fps for 9000$(including the camera of course)!

What CD offers is a really unique product IMO, which offers way more features than any ER before. If you don't have the budget for their monitor/recorder + media + accessories, move on.

Sony/RED/Panasonic and others went the proprietary media route from the beginning. So why should we blame a company, which tries to give us as filmmakers more options for our camera, because of their higher priced SSD's which are still cheaper than the RED/Sony SSD'S/Cards? a REDMAG is 3,900 bucks for 512GB, a SONY 512GB card for their AXS-R5 recorder is 1,800 bucks and a 480GB CD SSD is 1195 bucks.

Of course the recording options given are not the cheapest, but the price is lower than a RED Epic, lower than a C500 and lower than a F5 and F55 if you look at a whole package so why should we complain about that?

At the moment, i really don't know which product to buy, Odyssey 7/7Q, the samurai blade or a simple hyperdeck shuttle - so many options, i guess i'll wait and decide when the firmware and hardware update becomes available!

Stephan! If you read carefully what I says, you will see that I don't "complain" about proprietary media ... but I say about $550 for CARD READER and $829 for BATTERY CHARGER .. as well as $1500 for Codec ...
.. and keep in mind I would prefer to get Sony recorder anyway, even I am "such a filmmaker" ( you are definitely a better one :) ) ... Your argument about RED Epic, F5 and F55 cost looks like compare Honda to Lamborghini :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
FS-700 is NOT RED Epic or F55 .. don't you think so ? :) You don't want it to be cheaper? OK, it's up to you, ( maybe you invest in Sony or CD, I don't know )
...but I want them to REDUCE the price, ( why not? I'm in a free country ) ... and I'm not alone with that wish ...:-Happy(DBG):

sometimes it is just a marketing trick about language.
If you call your media "SSD", then you compare to others SSD. If you say yours are "special SSD", you just look like a greedy car seller trying to justify why your SSD are twice more expensive than the other.
Red are calling their "SSD" REDMAG , and they sell it 8 time more expensive than SSD , that's all the difference ....
