C100: 4k upgrade. Science fiction?

Hello.
Is a 4k upgrade for the C100 Mark II realistic or is it science fiction? In other words, would it be technically possible, if Canon decided to release it?
Thanks.

More highly compressed than what? SD cards can easily handle 100mbps. Given that AVCHD is only 25mbps, you'd have similar compression ratios with 4K. But the big question for Canon with 4K is what codec?

One can only guess. Mine is that Canon will have a 4K camera in the $8,000 price range within a year. What shape - C100 or 1D C - it will have, I've no clue. They could actually release both for slightly different markets. Right now, they'll be trying to cash in on C300 MK II and any cannibalization of those sales is not anticipated.

I doubt it. I do think we will see a paid firmware upgrade, but this will likely be related to the new focusing system in the C300 mkII or 10 bit 2k recording and priced around $1,000.

Probability is pretty low of a 4K upgrade for the C100 Mark II... though if it happened, it would be about as compressed as the 4K off of the GH4.

As for the AF system upgrade... I can't see that being a paid upgrade if they do it. It's FAR too small to be a paid upgrade unless it's like $100.

Really? I would love to be able to select a focus area and would gladly pay $500-$1,000 for this capability on my C100 Mark II, especially if the firmware upgrade came with some other improvements like 10bit 2k.

I wouldn't hold my breath for 10-bit, even if it is 2K. I'd wager we'll see 4K on the C100 Mark II before we see 10-bit anything on it.

As for the AF enhancements, look at what Canon considers a $500 upgrade... dual-pixel AF was an actual HARDWARE upgrade that required sending your camera in to Canon for the work.

I'd say selectable focus areas is more akin to the audio enhancements they gave to the 5D Mark II and 7D... and they did those for free.

Maybe they will do it but I doubt it will be internal 4K recording. In fact I think they could do 4K out up to 24fps and I don't think that would eat into the C300 MK2 market at all.

Nope. Not going to happen even if it is technically possible (which it probably isn't).
The C100 is a perfectly capable camera for anyone who wants to shoot HD. The C300 II is the camera for 4K.
