Basspig, Don't you get all those 0% for 18 months credit card? Makes it easy to finance a camera and then you roll over to another one for 3% every 18 months.
Basspig. Re the audio: Did you have the headphone output limiter ON?
I'm no audo engineer but as I recall the default was OFF and I was getting terrible clipping until I took a shot and turned that ON. Never have seen that setting on a camera before. Now my headphone level is usually 12. Terrible decision to make that only a menu item though instead of a setting on the camera body. (Instead they littered the body with things like auto shutter and auto gain buttons) Hope that helps.
By the way - out of curiosity - who writes all these posts - Mark or Mary Ann?
Paid for the FS7 with three credit cards.. one has 18 months no interest. The other has 6 months no interest. That's my target payoff date.
I was surprised that the headphone out was only able to swing less than 2 volts peak to peak on the scope. Need really efficient headphones to get any volume out of it. When testing, all limiters should be off, to avoid masking a problem. But that's not my beef.
The test results differ greatly from those done before me. What gets recorded to media is not a replica of what went into the mic inputs. I must be doing something wrong with the mic input configuration. Line inputs are perfect. So the test setup and signal source are working as they should. But in Mic mode, the bass response is rolled off, unlike ChristopherA's results. Could be firmware, or hardware. But it worries me that one camera is good and another bad.
As if that's not bad enough, I can't get Catalyst Browser (May edition) to transcode beyond 5%. It goes along at a nice pace and then sits there. CPU use goes to zero and the MP4 file is created, but is zero length. I tried installing it on a more powerful editing PC, but I can't even get the program to fully load. Only a small subset of the UI is there and no video can be played. Can't find any info on Google about how to troubleshoot the software. So I can't transcode what I shoot, and that means that as a 4K camera, it's useless. I could have sworn it was compatible with Windows 7 64-bit.. maybe I need to recheck the OS requirements. No error messages either. Just non-functional.
The is the lesser half of Mark & Mary Ann (husband) writing.
The final test was definitely with the Mic input. You can find most of my settings on post #37 of this thread. However, I did have to turn down the "Audio Input Level" in the menu to address the clipping issue from my second test.
Turns out I haven't updated to the 2.0 firmware yet. I thought I had, but I'm still on v1.10.
As far as I can tell, I replicated all of the same settings as you described above.
The one thing that could skew the results is AGC. If there is any auto level control, it would affect the result. That's a pair of slide switches next to the level dials. If those were on, then the AGC would compensate for the falloff of the single tone as it sweeps lower, lowering the gain at the higher frequencies, and raising it at the lower.
The other possibility is firmware differences. I wish Sony didn't mess with the audio like this. One thing about the EX series cams is they all are consistent from unit to unit, with flat response across the entire audio band.
