FS7: 4K Over 3G-SDI from FS7?

Was re reading the specs for the PXW-FS7 over at BandPro's site and came across this line:

"4K (4096 x 2160) is available over the 3G-SDI outputs or the HDMI 2.0 output of the camera so you can capture the 4096 x 2160 video using an optional external recorder."

My understanding up to now was that 4K was only output from HDMI. Has there been a recent firmware update to enable 4K over SDI so it will work with my Shogun recorder at frame rates exceeding 23.98?

No. 4k is only via HDMI or internal tocards.

With the back, it outputs 4k raw via the Raw BNC connector on back

Yep. Looks like you win the free FS7 for finding the error ;)

Oh, if only! I wish.

As it is, I need to find a store that will take a split payment between PayPal Credit and a credit card. I don't have enough on anyone account to cover the cost of the camera, so I'll need to make arrangements with the vendor that I eventually buy from.

BHphotovideo says the same;

"4K (4096 x 2160) is available over the 3G-SDI outputs or the HDMI 2.0 output of the camera so you can capture the 4096 x 2160 video using an optional external recorder."

All I can guess here is that the copy writer from Sony or ad agency is assuming the XDCA back and 4K (raw) via the 3G-SDI Raw BNC port on the XDCA.

Now, as far as Basspig's agonizing decision process-- I definitely empathize with you. Hardware investments are not to be taken lightly. But do you need the FS7? You indicate that you are perfectly happy with the audio from your EX1/3. They are great cameras. I still own an EX1. How much of a material effect will the FS7 have on your business? If your clients are perfectly happy with both audio and video, why buy the FS7? Or have you considered lease/financing rather than multiple credit cards?

The reason I'm considering the FS7:

14 stops of dynamic range
Large format sensor--better selective focus
4K resolution - an associate of mine sells home theater systems starting at $1M and up (D. Trump is one of his clients). He encouraged me to get a 4K camera to shoot demo material for selling those $100K 4K projectors when I showed him a demo reel I did with the EX1/Samurai.
180FPS slow motion
and... having been hit hard with taxes for 2014 because I bought nearly no equipment, I need a sizeable Section 179 deduction to lower my tax liability next year.

I'm sure I can think of additional reasons, but I do think it's time to move on.

Now on that XDCA module, it's rather disingenuous to market a capability that depends on an optional module without mentioning the requirement clearly.

That mistake could be leveraged into a valid reason for return (should some aspect, not necessarily the SDI output, not work out to my needs).

It's not very nice to take an honest mistake and leverage it into a dishonest act. You have been clearly informed here of the correct technical data.

Do whatever you choose to do, but I sleep well at night.

Honest or not, the company failed the due diligence to publish correct info. Why should we users be any better. Or to quote a NJ cop, "The President doesn't follow the Constitution, so why should we?" Sheesh, is my country's moral disintegration starting to affect my own moral choices? Hmmm...

There are numerous FS7's on ebay with valid reputations and bona fide warranties. You could simply link your account to Paypal and it will automatically take what is already in there and pull the rest from your account.

I'm no lawyer, but my best understanding is that under U.S. law that fact argument might work if you were a consumer who genuinely took that vendors representation as valid, and the purchase was contingent on that representation, and you acted in good faith based on the vendors claims. However, the fact that you actually do know better, that you are aware that the representation is most very likely a typographical error and not accurate, means you have no such good faith, and such a premeditated plan to return opened merchandise is at the very least disingenuous, and quite possibly meets the legal definition of fraud. While hardly honest, had you not discussed such a course of action on this forum, it might have worked exactly as you desired, but given that you have put your likely intentions in writing in this thread...

Seriously, one rental would fix your questions. I've proposed multiple ways to accomplish that, and all of them would be far more legal and honest than this proposal of yours. You realize, if you do this you either make the vendor take a loss by not selling the camera as new to the next buyer, or they do repackage it as "new", and someone else pays full price for your used camera instead of actually getting a new one?

Ugh.

yoclay, I'm not familiar with the nuances of Paypal in regard to how it links accounts. Would it work if I linked a Discover card and then used Paypal credit with Discover card being the backup funding?

James, while I don't condone fraud myself, our leadership certainly promotes it and then hides behind 'plausible deniability'. I'm growing increasingly frustrated with having to obey rules that my masters are exempt from. Besides, such activity would encourage dealers to be more careful with their ad copy.

You can try to justify it any way you want, but dishonest is dishonest. Why not try to be the better person?

The honest way would be that if I find the audio response is not up to par with the CineAlta cameras I own now, just return it on that reason. However, since most video people don't know audio from a hole in the wall, they could claim audio is not a valid complaint and reason for return. Something more black & white like a misprinted claim would likely hold more water than my real, honest reason.

But the PXW-FS7 isn't CineAlta. So even that isn't a reasoned basis. If we were discussing a product that wasn't readily available for rental, that didn't have responsive dealers available to discuss and engage with...

I don't think bringing politics into this was really warranted. But if your answer to others (allegedly) behaving dishonestly is to debase yourself and be equally dishonest, and to rationalize such behavior... that is depressing. Based on this conversation, I'd have to say you're exactly the sort of person I would never want to sell to. A deal is a deal is a deal, and when you need allowances you build it into the deal upfront.

Among other options would be to chat with dealers to see if they have a used or demo unit they would loan-to-buy, where you might only incur shipping if you chose not to keep it after testing the audio.

Be the better man, basspig, that is - if you can.

It isn't CineAlta, so that's what worries me. The audio could be as bad as the HVR-V1U (unusable for anything but bird calls and female speech) and I'd have to reject it.

Audio could be another reason it's priced much cheaper than the F5.

RE: Honesty... the whole reason I'm having this discussion is precisely to avoid having to return product. So far, no one has actually stepped forward with test results, and no dealer has followed up (only B&H, and to tell me, politely, that they don't have time to test it). Rental is too expensive. As it is, I'm scraping together multiple credit accounts to pay for it.

I had better luck with the EX1. Two people actually tested the audio and posted results. And they were excellent, so I bought the camera.

When the former Soviet Republic failed, in the early 90s, I met a number of Russian nationals who'd come to America. It struck me as odd back then that they had the mentality of criminals, and would try to screw you in a deal if they could. And then it dawned on me that the reason they were that way was generations of Communism made it impossible to earn and honest living. Now that Communism is in the US under the new monicker of "Progressivism", I'm beginning to feel that way myself. It's depressing. Maybe I need to hasten my move to Japan so I don't sink into a corrupt mindset like so many of my fellow countrymen and a certain police chief in New Jersey...
