4k internal recording rumored for the a7S

Is there enough processing power within the A7S to record high quality 4K ?

...And can it do this without overheating ?

It would be funny if they release this...except with a 50K base ISO or something.

Kidding aside...if they enabled this...I would purchase one.

it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. recording 4k is nothing special these days. cell phones do it, other sony cameras with the same bionz-x processor do it, the fz1000 and gh4 do it. the question is whether h.265 requires a specific hardware encoder

I'd probably be selling my shogun pretty quickly of this happened. A7s2 is at least a year away I'd bet, so I think this is possible... Recording requirements for card write speed is probably pretty insane.

Seems more likely in a mk2 version. Sony is not well known for adding such major feature upgrades to their products in this price range.

Maybe - but possibly not. I've shot 4K on the GH4 with a bunch of my Kingston cheap cards with no problems at all. Who knows -> if I need new cards to record 4K internally, done!

I believe HEVC requires 4-8 times the processing power of H.264.

Hypothetically speaking, newer processors with a smaller form are far more efficient than the outgoing generation (Intel M is going to a 14 nm process) but it should require a hardware change.

FWIW, A7s is capable of recording 4K internally but, according to Sony engineers, it taps out at about six minutes due to the heat accumulation. HEVC needs a lot more power, so the upgraded version may have to have a slightly larger body a la A7II in order to accommodate it.

or you could just get samsung nx1 with it's new LOG firmware update. I sure am considering selling my a7s. Just need to see the footage first.

Rather than pie in the sky h265, I'd rather see 4k with a 2 or 3 min rec time limit.

NX1 looks nice, but the A7s still has the DR advantage and it doesn't have the exposure drift issue. I like the NX1 too and I'd like to test one out, but the exposure issue is a deal breaker for me since I'm constantly shooting in the sun.

The AX100 can encode a 4k stream in high-end h.264 (AVC S) to an SDXC card so there is no problem with the SDXC card or h.264. Encoding in h.265 is significantly more compute-intensive than encoding in h.264. If Sony can't write 4k internal on the A7s using h.264, they're most certainly not going to be able to write 4k internal in h.265. In short, this is a preposterous rumor.

Speaking to Sony rep at CES, he indicated H.265 may be coming to A7x platform

He said "A7x platform"...it's likely this is less "rumor", and more "making sh!t up".

4K 100Mbps H.264 would easily work with the A7S's hardware. If overheating is the real reason 4K wasn't available at launch (vs. business reasons), H.265 is even less likely. Based on Sony's prior business model, a newer model with 4K is more likely (A7S II, etc.).

A7s can do h264 4K without overheating for sure and for business reasons left out for sure.
When something sounds to good to be tru it is. So I consider this rumor BS.
I guess h265 needs an stronger processor than h264, so I don't see that happening anyway.
