Auto focus, yes. Continuous auto focus, no.

I'll personally use it with a Ronin S and focus wirelessly with their little thumb controller. It's supposed to work through a Speedbooster too.
I thought that the wireless thumb controller was for the gimbal control not the lens. The focus thumb controller is for the lens but it's not wireless and plugs into the external focus motor control...

I've been a little confused on the new focus controller for the Ronin S, too. There's not much info out there I can find on it.

"...auto focus available using compatible lenses" according to the tech specs page on the Blackmagic site. I don't see any reason wedding videographers won't be all over this.

It’s the most basic AF implementation. Center point only and push to AF and very slow. Mostly not useable in my view.

To be clear, I mean the focus wheel that we often see attached to the handle of the Ronin-S. I say 'thumb controller' more to describe the way it might be used. I don't mean the old product that has been used with their Ronin and Ronin-M products (that was probably named something similar).

It's my understanding that it will be able to work wirelessly, over bluetooth for instance, on cameras with supported protocols. Everything is still in development so the info is admittedly sketchy. If it turns out it won't work with the PCC4K, there is always the fallback to the separate motor that will be available. I'm sure the total price will be quite OK, even if I need to use the external motor.

Hoping for wireless, though. For what I'm intending, I'd be able to live with some lag/imprecision.

That's basically the largest rig I plan for this camera: Ronin-S, AF module, battery grip on the PCC4K and screw-on ND filter.

OK so you post you will use a device that does not exist yet to control focus on camera that may or may not be compatible with that non existent device.
That's a wishful thinking if I ever heard one. I sincerely don't mean to troll but do you even realize how far fetched that is? I spoke to BMD about the e-lens control for years and it is definitely not on their priority list. Good luck though....

I also sincerely don't mean to troll (well, actually I do), but you also have been talking for several pages on more than one thread about a camera that doesn't exist.
Spinning anyone? I said on several pages of this thread that BMD should do better with this camera. I thought that was pretty clear to everyone- apparently not.... hope that's clear now? What does that have to do with trying to verify the facts? Are these not the facts?

Yes. If you by "non existing device" mean "existing device". And if you by "may or may not be compatible" actually mean "is compatible, best case wirelessly, worst case with external motor".

Then, 100% yes.

I guess I misunderstood when you wrote "through the speed booster" as that has nothing to do with the external motor control and implies very strongly e-lens control- which, indeed, does not exist with ronin.

Ah, OK.

Yes, it was a short summary type post there... I think I wrote "...work through a Speedbooster too". I mean it as in "even with a Speedbooster it will work". That might be obvious to some, but not all, I'm sure. But the Speedbooster should simply pass through the lens protocols and be "transparent" to the system. I didn't mean that the Speedbooster would be a component of the AF system.

But sure, all of this "information" is stuff said by DJI representatives on the NAB show floor and they keep saying everything is being finalised. There are no guarantees (except the closed system with DJI focus wheel and DJI external motor), but there IS intent there. That much is clear.

I actually don't think we disagree half as much as it seems like here, but it sure seems we are looking at the PCC4K from opposite sides of the proverbial coin.

We don't disagree, maybe I'm just more direct than you are but IMO we both understand the realities here...

Just curious about using the BMPCC4K on the Ronin S. Will the cameras length be a problem for the Ronin S or for any gimbal like the S ?

When it comes to my personal cameras I tend to be pretty pragmatic. And with age/experience.... increasingly so, it seems. It's not that I don't personally enjoy high fidelity files from top cameras, but a large part of my photography/videography needs to strike a balance between the gear I bring (and focus on—no pun intended) and how present I am around the people I'm with.

My Mavic Air drone is a pretty good example of that too. In absolute terms, the images are... prosumer. Not the best and not the worst. But the fact that I can basically put that thing in the pocket of a hoodie, or at the VERY LEAST, bring it along in any bag since size and weight is a non-issue... it's just good fun.

I think DJI and Blackmagic Design are great enablers. Yes, there might be quirks and limitations, but to me the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

A Ronin 2 is massive overkill for A) weddings and B) the BMPCC4K. The R2 is designed for really big cameras... like C300 Mark II and bigger... up to Alexas and Venice and fully kitted REDs. It's a beast.

The Ronin MX or even the Ronin S would be much better suited to the BMPCC4K's size.

Damn. Really? The C300 mkII is a "big" camera? I have brick batteries that are pretty much the same size. I guess it's all relative. I see people on here post all the time that the C300 is "too big" and "too heavy". I guess if you came up shooting a 5D, maybe it is to you. I did a shoot for a client(for a third party) this weekend filling in for someone and it was with a C300. The shoulder rig set-up they had for it was a horse sh!t, so I stripped it down "naked"(cam, handle, monitor pod, shotgun and glass-24-105/70-200) and shot with it that way. At the end the producer asked if my arms were OK. I wanted to laugh. The thing weighs NOTHING. My ENG W/A probably weighs as much, by itself. If you're a normal, healthy adult with no health problems or injuries and you think these little cams are "big" or "too big", maybe you need to rethink what you want to do for a living.

The Ronin S is open ended on one side. Yes, the PCC4K is pretty wide. Wider than a 1Dx mkII for instance. But I'm confident we'll see the camera on the Ronin S. Worst case is you'll need to buy an extended arm to offset it. Balance should not be a problem since you can offset the whole gimbal part relative to the handle as well. I'm sure DJI knows of the PCC4K's existence and they are still tuning the design so....

Thanks. Much appreciated.

In terms of gimbal cameras, the C300 is indeed big. I agree it’s not overly big or heavy, but compared to a lot of modern cameras, it’s on the bigger and heavier side. Compared to GH5, DSLRS, C200, FS5, EVA1, etc... it’s bigger and heavier. If I can avoid mounting something C300 size on a gimbal, I certainly will.

It’s certainly much larger than the BMPCC4K... which is the context we were talking about.

In any case, it’s on the lower end of the size the Ronin 2 was designed for... which was the point of my post. Good job turning that into a humblebrag about your muscles tho. :)

Understood. But that's not really the issue. A big screen that you can't view beyond directly behind is too inflexible for a small, likely handheld camera more likely subject to atypical angles. Makes sense in a "studio" iteration.
I'm currently working with a DP who's exhibiting a bit of cognitive dissonance in adapting to a pretty crappy, yet larger C200 monitor after working very well with a T6i.
There is no way he would go for a fixed screen arrangement.
