I definitely hear you...I'm actually going to be mostly using the built-in screen as that's what I always have with the URSA Minis, but when I need to build this small camera up to catch some eyes, I'm feeling this new OLED glass. Their old one is beautiful.

An Inferno for a few more bucks would be a much wiser decision, but one feature I really like is being able to control the percentage of my LUTs (intensity slider) with the newer SmallHD devices. I still haven't seen this feature on any other piece of hardware.

Understand why BlackMagic went with this design, & hope they follow up with a more modular sensor-in-a-box version, similar to how they followed up the previous Pocket with the Micro Studio camera.

Be great if it had at least a couple of SDI & XLR audio ports, dual CFast, & A/B or V-Mount battery plate. Also hard function buttons surrounding a operator-side LCD Status Display. Bonus points for ND Wheel, detachable Smart Grip, & Time Code in/out. Basically a baby UMP 4.6K with a RED-like layout.

Would love to be able to slap on a Zacuto EYE, or (though it’s a bit bulky) BM’s EVF, a 5” Bright LCD, & a Mini V-Lok Battery, then at the end of day pack it all into a carry-on sized backpack, along with a back-up body, lenses, etc, & feel confident I could travel anywhere without ever having to gate check my cameras.

Keeping an eye on Kinefinity, & Z CAM, but have some reservations, so like to see what BlackMagic comes up with. Be a bit shocked if they don’t eventually release some version, even if it’s primarily for the Drone, Gimbal, Remote, & VFX, markets.

Isn't there a micro 4k already?

There is (Micro STUDIO) but it doesn't record internally and it doesn't have a LOG option (very limited dynamic range). Also maxes out at 4K/30p (4K Studio does 4K/60p).

A 4K Micro CINEMA is actually what a lot of BM people thought would be the next BMPCC 4K.

If you haven't noticed:
The phones have already replaced your dream camera. They can do most of what this camera can do, have better software, better auto focus, better screens, and are essentially free (not to mention, smaller, lighter with advantage in battery life). They did not and will not replace a video camera for a while at least. But go ahead, buy another clunky looking DSLR that is not really a DSLR. It is your money.... I'm not saying don't buy it, just saying that if BMC were smarter they could do much better with their resources....

Does Dvxuser forums pay some people to indulge in unnecessarily provoking people to argue on ridiculous premises so that forum activity can be increased? :D

Don’t know any phones that are anywhere near shooting RAW motion or ProRes nor that have outstanding DR either.

It seems a lot of the hand wringing in this thread is about trying to make a simple camera compete with a fully fledged cinema camera. By having preposterously good features it forces us to rethink what you could use it for.

I don’t think anyone seriously is going to replace a high end cinema camera with this. But it sure will complement one really well for shots you can’t get with a full size camera. Isn’t that what’s cool ?

To me, the great divider is your answer to the question: will you use this camera handheld?

There are users who want/need a camera with handheld oriented ergonomics. This means either a DSLR style body, or a separate side grip. This grip should provide easy operation of the camera's most important functions.

A handheld camera should record and be powered internally. V-mount designs are auto excluded. External SSD sleds for recording are auto excluded. Huge external monitors/recorders are auto excluded.

While not really "pocketable", the PCC4K was designed as a handholdable camera in my mind: recording (video and audio), monitoring and powering is all built in.

Now, it might very well be that 'you' don't need a handholdable camera, but still like a lot of the features of the PCC4K: feature set, general small size, price... whatever... But the thing is, as soon as you don't need the specific ergonomics of handheld, but still want features like beefy codecs, high fps, connectivity and so on, then you're "relegated" to the much larger category of "production cameras". There are production cameras of all sizes. REDs and Alexa Minis are pretty small. C700, Venice and normal Alexas are pretty large.

If you are looking at the PCC4K but you don't need a handheld camera, make sure you're barking up the right tree: the range of production cameras. Maybe what you really want is the Ursa Mini Pro to be more like a RED in size? Or more modular? But it's not productive to demand the range of handheld cameras to be made into something that isn't handholdable any more.

That said, I too agree that there are a number of design changes that could be made to the PCC4K to make it more usable within it's category of handholdable.

But whatever the case might be, surely it should be possible for us to discuss changes we'd like to see in a positive and supportive fashion? The rhetoric of the last few pages makes zero sense to me.

I own a ursa mini pro and i'm looking forward to buy the P4K just as a B camera or to mount it on a zhyiun crane 2 and have a consistent color science during my productions. I don't see myself using the Pocket as a A camera, unless I need to shoot with high ISO and the P4K proves to be good with this regards.
I find the ergonomics of the ursa mini pro to be perfect for my needs and I am tired of camaras that are not self contained and need lots of third parties accessories that change weight distribution and (often) offer more headache than solutions.

by and far, the vast majority of people who will buy this camera...and I predict it'll sell out....will NOT be people who make money shooting video ...i.e pros, whether it's a wedding video, corporate , or commercial, or even , if there's still such an animal...a real cinematographer. So speaking honestly....pro's opinions don't really matter. Go play with your canon c700's. It will be students, travelers, journalist, artist or microbudget filmmakers , or even alternative media people who just want to film things with higher quality. You can buy this camera , with falling prices, and easily buy a 4core, nvidia'd laptop ...and pay no more than 3k for everything, including storage. It's insane. There will always be people that want it different. I'm thrilled it exists at all ! Every student , from film to journalism to artist , on the planet will buy this camera. And some people think that's it's not a multi media tool because it only shoots 8mp ! Baloney.

I can see wedding videographers use this camera on, say, a Ronin 2. Don't most wedding videographers use either the A7S II or the GH5? I think they'll love this.

Keeping things in focus might be a big pain when this camera is mounted on a gimbal. It has no AF tracking at all, so you will have to live with a preset focus when it's on a gimbal.

A Ronin 2 is massive overkill for A) weddings and B) the BMPCC4K. The R2 is designed for really big cameras... like C300 Mark II and bigger... up to Alexas and Venice and fully kitted REDs. It's a beast.

The Ronin MX or even the Ronin S would be much better suited to the BMPCC4K's size.

Ronin S! LOL that's what I meant.

...no afc ....is that confirmed ?
ps....oh yeah...I forgot about wedding photographers !

"...auto focus available using compatible lenses" according to the tech specs page on the Blackmagic site. I don't see any reason wedding videographers won't be all over this.

Auto focus, yes. Continuous auto focus, no.

I'll personally use it with a Ronin S and focus wirelessly with their little thumb controller. It's supposed to work through a Speedbooster too.
