40Mbps AVCHD High Reliability Patch

I have been using this Ipowell setting for more than two months and four major shootings now, and here is what I have found:

- Absolutely no problem under any circumstance with my Patriot "Iris" SD card, 32 GB/Class 6
- Almost instantly locking up when shooting fast moving objects in the 720P60 (SHD) setting using my Transcend SD card, 32 GB/Class 10.
- No problem shooting using the 1080i (FHD) setting, using the same Transcend SD card, 32 GB/Class 10

I have done file transfer speed tests on those two cards. While the overall speed is almost identical when copying large files, the Transcend Class 10 card has an initial delay, about 1 second, which probably is the root cause of the camera's lockup.

I tried it, but using class 6 and sandisk class 10 it halts recording under certain circumstances.

That could definitely cause problems for the GH1's AVCHD encoder. If the delay persists after using the GH1 to reformat the card, I'd suspect it was defective.

No problems here with the Transcend 16GB class 10. I have two and there's a difference, albeit small, between the two cards. One cards locks up faster than the other. Maybe you could return yours?

Much appreciated if someone could help me with the following queries on the 40Mbps patch versus the 50Mbps patch (BTW I use PAL):

* The 40Mbps AVCHD patch works under the FHD mode, but what happens under the SH, H and L modes, both in terms of bitrate and FPS ? Are these 40Mbps as well at the native FPS ? Also if I want to try high quality slow motion, would I select the SH mode, thereby capturing 50fps, use a 1/100 shutter speed (instead of 1/50th normally), then drop it into a 25p timeline in CS4?

* The 50Mbps patch works under both the FHD and SH modes, but under the SH mode the FPS is 25fps and not 50fps as for the 40Mbps patch, meaning that it is not possible to do a high quality slow motion capture per the above?

* Finally, the 40Mbps patch comes with the 35Mbps MJPEG patch, while the 50Mbps patch comes with the 60Mbps MJPEG patch. Therefore, if I want to do high quality slow motion, I must always choose the 40Mbps AVCHD patch?

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers.

In the 40Mbps AVCHD patch, these PAL modes use 50fps:
SH: 40Mbps
H: 24Mbps
L: 17Mbps

Yes, but you must conform the video clip to run at 25p.

Correct.

If you prefer, you can combine the 60Mbps MJPEG patch settings with the 40Mbps AVCHD patch.

That could definitely cause problems for the GH1's AVCHD encoder. If the delay persists after using the GH1 to reformat the card, I'd suspect it was defective.

Update: Finally got time to retest after reformating the Transcend 32 GB Class 10 card in the GH1, and the problem completely went away.

Works fine with a Toshiba 16GB Class 10 card. On a PNY class 6 card it stops at the highest settings after 30-40 seconds.

So will I still have to perform the pulldown in my NLE when recording 108024p? Or can I just check it and avoid having to do that?

I check it and don't worry about it. If you don't check it, Neoscene is the best program to remove the pulldown. Checking it can make the camera somewhat less stable, but I rarely have recording failures. Maintain a 180-degree shutter and you shouldn't have a problem. I don't.

When shooting any video with these settings, should I always see bitrates of 40+ in FHD mode? I applied the hack, took some quick video around my office, and the GH13 stream parser is saying my average bitrate is 13mbits! I'm new to this, and rather confused, is it always supposed to shoot at 40mbits in avchd??

Not always. Only in scenes with a lot of details. I achieved around 30mbits in nature.

To achieve high bitrates with the AVCHD codec, you need a well-lit, sharply-focused, highly-detailed scene. If any of these conditions are not met, it's not uncommon for the bitrate to drop to the 12Mbps level. For consistently high bitrates, especially in low light, the MJPEG encoder may be a better choice.

How to load J setings

How to load J setings

Need some help...i know this this question has bein answered several times,,,just cant find it anywhere. How do i load a patch from J directly into ptools

Hi guys, I have a problem I cannot shoot in avchd lite , when i've try to record in avchd mode, an warning messages appears on screen : " cannot record due to incompatible format (ntsc/pal) on this card ) in motion jpeg it works... using Ultra SanDisk

Thank you in advance.

I want to mix and intercut 1080/24p footage from a GH2 with 1080/24p footage from the GH13. I'm using an older version of ptool with jobless's D settings on my GH13 which seems to work well enough.

The question I have is what will give me the closest match to GH2 1080/24p footage:

  1. Update ptool and use the newer C settings?
  2. Update ptool and install lpowell's reliability patch but switch native 24p mode on?
  3. Update ptool and install the Fast Action 3-Frame GOP Patch?
  4. Keep using the old version of ptool with jobless's D settings?
  5. Do something else?

Just bought and installed CS5 Production Premium on my Macbook Pro (migrated from FCS). I'm mainly shooting GH1(3) with lpowell's j settings, and I have a few questions...

1. Is there any advantage in trans-coding from AVCHD in CS5 whatsoever? I am using lpowell's J reliability settings, in which there is no "native 24/25" checking, so on import, I get the red line above footage and it needs immediate rendering. Would transcoding change that? In other words, can I transcode (to Intra or whatever) to make it native and render-free, or am I missing something?

3. Is there a good way to pull-down from 30p to 25p (for MPEG 720p30 footage) in PAL-land.

Many thanks
